HOW LEADER–MEMBER EXCHANGE INFLUENCES EFFECTIVE WORK BEHAVIORS: SOCIAL EXCHANGE AND INTERNAL–EXTERNAL EFFICACY PERSPECTIVES

In this article, we propose and test an integrative theory of leader–member exchange (LMX) that extends our understanding of the mechanisms affecting LMX and important organizational outcomes. We argue that LMX enhances job performance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) through 2 sets of processes. As a result of a social exchange process, high LMX managers encourage reciprocal obligations. These obligations are manifested as subordinate commitment to their supervisors. This commitment, in turn, prompts more OCBs and higher job performance. Through a second process, high LMX supervisors enhance their subordinates’ self‐efficacy and means efficacy, thereby improving job performance. Results of a field study support our predictions. Theoretical and practical implications and directions for future research are discussed.     

THE EFFECTS OF RANGE RESTRICTION ON ESTIMATES OF CRITERION INTERRATER RELIABILITY: IMPLICATIONS FOR VALIDATION RESEARCH

This paper explores the implications of the fact that range restriction affects reliability coefficients as well as validity coefficients. Of concern was the possibility that, if range restriction produced an underestimate of criterion reliability, the use of such an estimate in correcting observed validity coefficients for attenuation could result in overestimating population validity, lb address this issue, 3 scenarios were considered: truncation on the predictor, truncation on an unobserved variable, and truncation on the criterion. The 3 scenarios were found to have substantial differences in their consequences for reliability and validity estimation. Although range restriction did result in an underestimate of criterion reliability, it is generally not the case that these underestimates will result in overestimates of validity if researchers make effective use of available information about the presence and degree of range restriction.     

The Scope of Deflationism: Reply to Gregory

Paul Gregory's careful and insightful response to "Carnap and Two Dogmas of Empiricism" highlights a number of points which were underdeveloped in that paper. I think that he has brought into relief a central issue between Camap and Quine by supplying a crucial distinction. However I still maintain that Quine's assault is less than successful and that Gregory's further analysis of the debate sheds light on why this is so.
