This study of Japanese female serial arsonists examined their crimes and background characteristics. The data were a sample from the national police register containing arson cases resulting in charges in Japan between 1982 and 2005. Serial arsonists were 6% of the arson offenders and 12% of these were female, resulting in 83 female serial arsonist data sets. The mean age was 37.6 years and 43% were unemployed. Nearly half were married. Only 28% had a documented history of mental problems and 22% had a prior arrest, usually for theft (19%). Female serial arsonists are characterised by going to a place near their home with a lighter and setting fire directly to combustible materials. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling was used to analyse 33 variables related to the offences. The arsons could be differentiated in terms of either expressive or instrumental sources of action. Expressive arsons were opportunistic and impulsive acts, motivated by emotional distress. The fires were mostly set close to home. Expressive arsons were characteristic of 66% of the females. Instrumental arsons were often motivated by revenge and involved planned and goal‐directed behaviours. They were committed by 13% of the females. Instrumental arsonists tended to travel further from home. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In the behavioral and social sciences, quasi-experimental and observational studies are used due to the difficulty achieving
a random assignment. However, the estimation of differences between groups in observational studies frequently suffers from
bias due to differences in the distributions of covariates. To estimate average treatment effects when the treatment variable
is binary, Rosenbaum and Rubin (1983a) proposed adjustment methods for pretreatment variables using the propensity score.
However, these studies were interested only in estimating the average causal effect and/or marginal means. In the behavioral
and social sciences, a general estimation method is required to estimate parameters in multiple group structural equation
modeling where the differences of covariates are adjusted.
We show that a Horvitz–Thompson-type estimator, propensity score weighted M estimator (PWME) is consistent, even when we use estimated propensity scores, and the asymptotic variance of the PWME is shown to be
less than that with true propensity scores.
Furthermore, we show that the asymptotic distribution of the propensity score weighted statistic under a null hypothesis is
a weighted sum of independent χ2
1 variables.
We show the method can compare latent variable means with covariates adjusted using propensity scores, which was not feasible
by previous methods. We also apply the proposed method for correlated longitudinal binary responses with informative dropout
using data from the Longitudinal Study of Aging (LSOA). The results of a simulation study indicate that the proposed estimation
method is more robust than the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation method, in that PWME does not require the knowledge of the
relationships among dependent variables and covariates. 相似文献

Are people always motivated to strive for cognitive consistency? Does culture influence a person’s motivation to maintain cognitive consistency between attitudes and actions or between preferences and choices? When and how do people in different cultures experience cognitive dissonance, engage in justification of their behavior, and use self‐affirmation? When and how are people with different models of agency motivated to maintain a preference‐choice consistency? In this paper, culturally variable self‐schemata and models of agency, independent self and agency dominant in North American culture and interdependent self and agency prevalent in Asian culture, are considered as the source of cultural variations in cognitive consistency. These culturally divergent self‐systems create variance in situations in which North Americans and Asians are motivated to maintain cognitive consistency. In this paper, related cross‐cultural research is reviewed. Some future research agenda are also discussed. 相似文献

The pathways between parenting behaviours, personality and physical health have all been separately studied. Prior research has paid little attention to the indirect effects of personality in the path between parenting behaviours and better health. The purpose of this study was to explore the mediational effects of conscientiousness on the relationships between parental socialisation of responsibility and self-rated health, and to examine potential age differences in this mediational pathway. In total, 736 female and 749 male members across Japan participated in this study. They were divided into three groups by age category: younger-, middle-aged and older-aged. Conscientiousness and health were concurrently rated, while parental socialisation of responsibility was retrospectively assessed. Our analyses revealed that parental socialisation of responsibility is positively associated with conscientiousness and self-rated health, that conscientiousness is positively associated with self-rated health, and that conscientiousness fully mediated the effect of parental socialisation of responsibility on self-rated health. The mediational links were consistent across younger, middle-aged and older-aged cohorts. Our findings suggest that greater parental socialisation of responsibility relates to higher conscientiousness, and consequently healthier adults. These findings imply that parental behaviours could be a plausible target for intervention to foster the development of conscientiousness and better health. 相似文献

The revised version of the Type A Behavior Assessment Scale and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory short version were administered to 104 university students. The former scale has three subscales, Impatience and Hostile Speech Style, Achievement Striving and Job Commitment, and Time Urgency. The latter scale has three subscales. Need for Attention and Praise, Sense of Superiority, and Competence and Self-assertion. Analysis gave a total of five significant correlations between the subscales of the two questionnaires; Impatience and Hostile Speech Style of Type A is positively correlated with scores on two subscales of the narcissism measure, Need for Attention and Praise. Self-assertion, and Achievement Striving and Job Commitment of Type A is positively correlated with scores on all three subscales of the narcissism measure. 相似文献

This study proposes a new item parameter linking method for the common-item nonequivalent groups design in item response theory
(IRT). Previous studies assumed that examinees are randomly assigned to either test form. However, examinees can frequently
select their own test forms and tests often differ according to examinees’ abilities. In such cases, concurrent calibration
or multiple group IRT modeling without modeling test form selection behavior can yield severely biased results. We proposed
a model wherein test form selection behavior depends on test scores and used a Monte Carlo expectation maximization (MCEM)
algorithm. This method provided adequate estimates of testing parameters. 相似文献

The present research examined whether narcissism is related to higher variability in self-concept across roles and time points. Three indices of self-concept variability across roles were formulated based on the participants’ self-ratings for personality attributes. A probabilistic sample in Study 1 as well as a student sample in Study 2 revealed that the narcissistic personality inventory (NPI) positively correlated with the variability indices, except for the self-concept differentiation (SCD), while well-being measures were only related to SCD. The student sample also showed a significant correlation between NPI and longitudinal variability in self-concept within a month-long interval. Implications for the instability of the narcissistic self-concept and its relationship with psychological well-being are discussed. 相似文献

Accumulating evidence suggests that cognitive declines in old (healthy) animals could arise from depression of intracortical inhibition, for which a decreased ability to produce GABA during senescence might be responsible. By simulating a neural network model of a primary visual cortical (V1) area, we investigated whether and how a lack of GABA affects cognitive performance of the network: detection of the orientation of a visual bar-stimulus. The network was composed of pyramidal (P) cells and GABAergic interneurons such as small (S) and large (L) basket cells. Intrasynaptic GABA-release from presynaptic S or L cells contributed to reducing ongoing-spontaneous (background) neuronal activity in a different manner. Namely, the former exerted feedback (S-to-P) inhibition and reduced the frequency (firing rate) of action potentials evoked in P cells. The latter reduced the number of saliently firing P cells through lateral (L-to-P) inhibition. Non-vesicular GABA-release, presumably from glia and/or neurons, into the extracellular space reduced the both, activating extrasynaptic GABAa receptors and providing P cells with tonic inhibitory currents. By this combinatorial, spatiotemporal inhibitory mechanism, the background activity as noise was significantly reduced, compared to the stimulus-evoked activity as signal, thereby improving signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. Interestingly, GABA-spillover from the intrasynaptic cleft into the extracellular space was effective for improving orientation selectivity (orientation bias), especially when distractors interfered with detecting the bar-stimulus. These simulation results may provide some insight into how the depression of intracortical inhibition due to a reduction in GABA content in the brain leads to age-related cognitive decline. 相似文献

We measure general activity of mice(Mus musculus) in a burrowing chamber from an ecological point of view. Natural topsoil or sand, however, is not suitable for long-term dwelling of mice, because burrows are likely to keep collapsing and to become rapidly rotten from being sprinkled with water to guard against collapse. For the present study, we devised a mixture of absorbent cotton and wood shavings as soil material. The mice burrowed in this soil just as they would in natural soil. About 104 cm3 of the cotton-shavings soil were durable for at least 40 days with 3 mice. These results suggest that this soil material can be a useful tool in not only the study of general activity but also other studies (e.g., the observation of maternal behavior of mice in burrows). 相似文献
