Financial interests of authors in scientific journals: A pilot study of 14 publications 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Disclosure of financial interests in scientific research is the centerpiece of the new conflict of interest regulations issued
by the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Science Foundation that became effective October 1, 1995. Several scientific
journals have also established financial disclosure requirements for contributors.
This paper measures the frequency of selected financial interests held among authors of certain types of scientific publications
and assesses disclosure practices of authors. We examined 1105 university authors (first and last cited) from Massachusetts
institutions whose 789 articles, published in 1992, appeared in 14 scientific and medical journals.
Authors are said to “possess a financial interest” if they are listed as inventors in a patent or patent application closely
related to their published work; serve on a scientific advisory board of a biotechnology company; or are officers, directors,
or major shareholders (beneficial owner of 10% or more of stock issued) in a firm that has commercial interests related to
their research. Applying the criteria to the reference population of journals and Massachusetts academic authors, we measured
the following frequencies for lead authors: .20 for serving on a scientific advisory board; .07 for being an officer, director,
or major shareholder in a biotechnology firm; and .22 for being listed as an inventor in a related patent or patent application.
The joint frequency of articles in the journals reviewed with a lead author that meets one of the three conditions is .34.
Implications of these results for the new conflict of interest guidelines and disclosure policies are discussed. 相似文献

Middle and high school students (N=207) in small-town midwestern schools were surveyed regarding factors that motivate and sustain bullying. Students failed to endorse statements that bullying teaches about behavior unacceptable to the group and that making friends with a bullied person would result in lowering one's social status. Students agreed that victims brought it on themselves, teasing was mostly done in fun, and that bullying helps people by making them tougher. Girls, but not boys, tended to agree that bullies held higher social status than did victims. 相似文献

Three different measures of the Big Five personality dimensions were developed from the battery of questionnaires used in the National Merit Twin Study: one from trait self-rating scales, one from personality inventory items, and one from an adjective check list. Behavior-genetic models were fit to what the three measures had in common, and to the variance distinctive to each. The results of the model fitting agreed with other recent studies in showing the Big Five dimensions to be substantially and about equally heritable, with little or no contribution of shared family environment. Heritabilities for males and females did not differ significantly. For Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, some effect of shared environment was found for measure-specific variance on the personality inventory, and for Extraversion and Neuroticism, models involving nonadditive genetic variance or twin contrast effects provided slightly better fits. 相似文献

Previous terror management research has demonstrated that mildly depressed participants show a greater increase in worldview defense in response to reminders of their mortality than do nondepressed participants. Because the cultural worldview is posited to provide a meaningful conception of life, we hypothesized that mildly depressed participants who defend their worldview in response to mortality salience (MS) would increase their perception that the world is meaningful. A preliminary study first examined the Kunzendorf No Meaning Scale as a measure to assess perceptions of meaning. In the primary study, mildly depressed and nondepressed participants contemplated their own mortality or a neutral topic, evaluated two targets in a manner that either allowed them to defend their worldview or that did not, and then completed the Kunzendorf No Meaning Scale. As predicted, mildly depressed participants who had the opportunity to defend their worldview in response to mortality salience reported greater meaning in life than did mildly depressed participants who did not have the opportunity to defend their worldview, or mildly depressed participants not exposed to mortality salience. The effects of a three-phase family communication program were evaluated. In the skill-teaching phase, family members were taught reciprocal social communication skills in a clinic setting. During the skill-review phase, each family member practiced the skills in their homes with the teacher. During the home-based family conference phase, each family was taught to use a structured format to resolve current family issues using their newly acquired skills. In-home parent-youth interactions were observed during a series of 1-hr sessions that involved directed and nondirected situations. Evaluation included a multiple baseline design across skills during the skill-teaching phase and a multiple baseline design across families for the family conference phase. Although the procedures of the skill-teaching phase resulted in parent-adolescent dyads learning to use the skills in the teaching setting, competent use of the skills in the home was not observed until the family conference phase was implemented. These results suggest the importance of home-based intervention if changes are to be obtained at home. 相似文献

Prompting, modeling, and differential reinforcement with client-chosen rewards were used to teach 3 nonverbal people with severe to profound mental retardation to exit their group homes at the sound of the house fire alarm, using a multiple baseline design. All 3 participants learned to exit independently in less than 2 min in all experimenter-initiated surprise fire drills and in the majority of staff-initiated surprise fire drills. This paper analyzes the notion of a minimal belief change that incorporates new information. I apply the fundamental decision-theoretic
principle of Pareto-optimality to derive a notion of minimal belief change, for two different representations of belief: First,
for beliefs represented by a theory – a deductively closed set of sentences or propositions – and second for beliefs represented
by an axiomatic base for a theory. Three postulates exactly characterize Pareto-minimal revisions of theories, yielding a
weaker set of constraints than the standard AGM postulates. The Levi identity characterizes Pareto-minimal revisions of belief
bases: a change of belief base is Pareto-minimal if and only if the change satisfies the Levi identity (for “maxichoice” contraction
operators). Thus for belief bases, Pareto-minimality imposes constraints that the AGM postulates do not. The Ramsey test is
a well-known way of establishing connections between belief revision postulates and axioms for conditionals (“if p, then q”).
Pareto-minimal theory change corresponds exactly to three characteristic axioms of counterfactual systems: a theory revision
operator that satisfies the Ramsey test validates these axioms if and only if the revision operator is Pareto-minimal.
