This paper introduces a kenotic theory of conversion that builds from simple attachment to childhood experience of peak states
to encompass dialectical stages of development: Priming, Decentering, Reflection, Encounter, Denucleation, Emplacement and
Discipline. Thereafter, the dialectical mode gives rise to the mature phase of conversion—the continuing integration of the
religious worldview through Metamorphosis and Embassy. The conversion theory is illustrated by an interpretation of a dialectical
set of experiences of Anton Boisen. I interpret Anton Boisen’s conversion from a 19th Century Christianity that was wedded
to religious and racial manifest destiny to that of a reborn Christian living with the 20th Century’s experience of evangelical
and evolutionary universalism. Boisen’s clinical desolations (“psychosis”) and adoption of vocation (“change of allegiance”)
suggest his conversion counterposed the instinctual with the higher order ideals he struggled to embody—a dialectical negation
of his younger static and triumphalist Christian cultural identity that developed into a more integrated, expansive, and inclusive
view of the human family and deepening allegiance to the ordinary, underserved, and growing population of the mentally suffering.

In recent attempts to bring psychoanalysis into greater contact with other sciences, a number of works have explicated neural science concepts and phenomena--affect, memory, consciousness--for the psychoanalyst. These efforts have helped analysts build a more scientific foundation for their theory and practice. A related task remains--namely, to take psychoanalytic concepts and see how they relate to other sciences. The concept of identification has a long history in psychoanalytic theory. It is seen in parent-child interactions, in teaching and mentoring relationships, and in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Neuropsychology and evolutionary biology have explored the phylogenetic precursors of identification, while genetics and infant observation provide insights into individual processes of identification. Finally, neuroscience, particularly recent studies of mirror neurons, offers information about the biological mechanisms of imitation and the relationship of imitation to identification. Findings from these sciences are presented in an effort to further the psychoanalytic understanding of identification, especially its biological underpinnings. 相似文献

Why should psychoanalysts learn about neighboring disciplines? It is often argued that, although information from neuroscience, neuropsychology, evolutionary psychology, and other fields may be of interest to analysts, it has no real effect on their practice: on the way they listen, the way they react, or the way they treat their patients. A corollary of this position is that there is no reason to include such information in a psychoanalytic curriculum, since it does not help candidates become better analysts. Against this view, two reasons are advanced for the importance of interdisciplinary study. The more general reason is that it grounds psychoanalysis in the broader scientific world, reducing its isolation and inbred parochialism. This can help justify the discipline intellectually, possibly in advance of and independently of supportive research from within the field (e.g., outcome studies). The second reason is that our own minds, and particularly those of the generation now entering training, have been altered by changes in the scientific zeitgeist and we need to have some grasp of these changes. Finally, six examples of findings from other disciplines are presented that even now may be contributing to thinking about psychoanalytic practice. 相似文献

A FORTRAN system for constructing various kinds of stimulus materials is described. A user enters the basic components of an experiment (stimulus items, presentation parameters, trial identifiers, etc.) as files, and uses the system to combine the basic files, automatically constructing the desired stimuli. The system contains file-manipulation functions for combining files (including factorial combination), functions for separating out parts of a file, and functions for randomizing files. The user can use the standard FORTRAN function-embedding and function-definition features to easily specify elaborate operations on the basic files to construct complex stimulus files. 相似文献

We interrupted pop-out search before it produced a detection response by adding extra distractors to the search display. We show that when pop-out for an orientation target fails because of this interruption, it nevertheless provides useful information to the processes responsible for difficult search. That is, partial pop-out assists difficult search. This interaction has also been found for color stimuli (Olds, Cowan, & Jolicoeur, 2000a, 2000b). These results indicate that interactions and/or overlap between the mechanisms responsible for pop-out and the mechanisms responsible for difficult search may be quite general in early visual selection. 相似文献

Visual attention can be goal driven, stimulus driven, or a combination of the two. Here we report evidence for an unexpectedly stimulus-driven component of visual search for a target defined by color. Observers demonstrated a surprisingly cost-free ability to incorporate multiple classifiers in search for a target of one color from among distractors of other colors. A target color was presented among distractors that could change from trial to trial (intermixed presentation) or that remained constant across all trials in a block (blocked presentation). For blocked presentation, a single search classifier (a mechanism that segregates the target from distractors in color space) could be adopted, whereas for intermixed presentation different classifiers had to be used when the distractor colors changed. The benefit of blocked presentation was very small, suggesting that the appropriate classifier was determined very quickly in trials for which the classifier changed. The results suggest that the stimulus-driven activation of an appropriate stimulus classifier can be very efficient. 相似文献

This study explored the efficacy of psychological skills and mindfulness training intervention on the psychological wellbeing of undergraduate music students. Participants were undergraduate music students (n = 36) from the Department of Music at a South African university, 21 of whom were elected to take the psychological skills and mindfulness training intervention. Data on their self-reported psychological wellbeing, psychological skills, mindfulness and performance anxiety levels were collected pre-and post-intervention. The analysis applied non-parametric procedures to determine changes in students’ psychological wellbeing after the seven-week intervention programme. Findings suggest improvements in psychological wellbeing, psychological skills, mindfulness and performance anxiety with training. Psychological skills and mindfulness training may have benefits to the psychological wellbeing of music students. 相似文献
