Philosophy,Addiction and Inquiry

ABSTRACT

This introductory paper raises, partly as a preparation for the other papers in this issue, questions about how philosophy ought to proceed in the light of knowledge we have in surrounding disciplines, with a focus on the case of addiction. It also raises issues about how addiction research might be enlightened by philosophical work. In the background for the paper are two competing approaches to the evidential grounding of philosophical insight. According to a widespread view, philosophical knowledge rests on a set of intuitions. According to another, philosophy has no special evidential grounding. This paper resists the attractions of the first picture, and argues against the separateness of philosophy that it lends support. I try to make plausible that such a picture is harmful both for philosophy and for empirical science. We should replace it with a mild form of unity of science or unity of inquiry, in the spirit of the founder of this journal.     

Darwin and moral realism: survival of the iffiest

This paper defends moral realism against Sharon Street’s “Darwinian Dilemma for Realist Theories of Value” (this journal, 2006). I argue by separation of cases: From the assumption that a certain normative claim is true, I argue that the first horn of the dilemma is tenable for realists. Then, from the assumption that the same normative claim is false, I argue that the second horn is tenable. Either way, then, the Darwinian dilemma does not add anything to realists’ epistemic worries.     

THE EXPERIENCE OF GOD AND THE WORLD: CHRISTIANITY'S REASONS FOR CONSIDERING PANENTHEISM A VIABLE OPTION

What reasons and resources can Christian theology find for developing a panentheist position that is also able to engage with contemporary science? By taking its point of departure in basic human experiences, Christian theology can, even in a Trinitarian fashion, be developed as a way to understand God's presence in the world as a presence where the actual occurrences point towards God's own work. This point is especially related to the experience of love. Furthermore, God's presence can be understood as sacramental in the Augustinian sense. Moreover, the contributions of the Danish philosopher of religion Knud E. Løgstrup on God's presence and transcendence, as well as Niels Henrik Gregersen's elaborations on deep incarnation. Prove to offer important reasons for considering panentheism a viable option for the articulation of Christian theology.     

Religious revivalism in nineteenth-century Norway and twentieth-century Egypt: A critique of fundamentalism studies

The aim of this article is to challenge the idea that the current Islamist movements could fruitfully be considered to belong to a global category of fundamentalism. For this purpose it is necessary to criticize the most sophisticated attempts that have been made to argue for the existence of such a general phenomenon, with Islamism as one of its most prominent constituent parts.     

Religion and the Media: The Cultural Role of a Church-Based Welfare Agent in a Norwegian Local Community

This article analyses and discusses the mediation of the moral agency of a small church-based (Norwegian) welfare organisation from a media theoretical perspective. The main focus is on the relationship between the welfare organisation and its leader on the one hand and the local newspaper on the other hand. The relationship is conceived and analysed as a trust relationship and seen in the context of the local newspaper's agency manifesting the ideas of the public journalism movement. The article discusses whether the agency of the particular type of welfare organisation as mediated in the (secular) newspaper may contribute to ‘boosting religion’ or, more specifically, whether it might indicate that the church is still interesting as a source of moral authority.
