Borderline and schizophrenic patients: A comparison using the MCMI-II

In the present study we examined the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II scores of psychiatric patients with a diagnosis of either borderline personality disorder (BPD;n=13) or schizophrenia (n=13). The analyses revealed that the BPD patients were significantly elevated on a number of scales in addition to the Borderline scale. The second goal of this study was to assess the discriminative validity of the Borderline and Thought Disorder Scales with both base rate (BR) cutoffs and the number of endorsed prototypic items. The Borderline scale demonstrated the most diagnostic power when using BR cutoffs, whereas the Thought Disorder scale performed poorly, no better than chance levels, with all cutoffs.This research was supported by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Grant 410-89-0335 and by a grant from the Department of Research and Programme Evaluation, Brockville Psychiatric Hospital. Interaural time vs. interaural intensity in a lateralization paradigm

In a two-interval lateralization procedure, observers judged whether a stimulus presented with an interaural intensive difference was right or left in lateral space of the same stimulus presented with only an interaural temporal difference. The stimuli were pure tones of 500 and 1,000 Hz and 1,000-Hz low-pass noise. All stimuli were presented at both 65 and 55 dB SPL. For each of several values of interaural time (ranging from 0 to 1,000 microsec across all stimuli), a function was determined which related proportion of “right” relative position judgments to the value of the interaural intensive difference. The intercepts of these functions indicated that a progressively smaller amount of interaural intensive difference was required for the two stimuli to occupy a similar lateral location as the interaural temporal difference was increased. The slopes of the function suggested that the images associated with larger values of the interaural temporal differences are less distinct and blend together more than the images associated with small values of the temporal difference. Thus, the procedure provided a means for comparing the lateral location of images produced by interaural differences of time and intensity.     

VISUO-PERCEPTIVE AND VISUO-MOTOR PERFORMANCE OF CHILDREN WITH READING DISABILITIES

Psychol ., 1969, 10 , 225–231.—Twenty 9–10-year-old children with reading disability were compared with twenty normal readers on Frostig Test of Visual Perception, Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test and Goodenough Draw-a-Person Test. Contrary to prediction, the results showed more similarity than difference in performance level between the two groups, only the Bender Test discriminating significantly ( p<0.05 ). It was concluded that impaired visual perception and visuo-motor dysfunction did not seem important correlates of reading disability.
