This paper is concerned with certain male behaviors during and after their extramarital affairs and the impact of those behaviors and associated attitudes on the men's spouses. The observations cited here are drawn from clinical samples but seemingly have some features in common with what appears in nonclinical populations as well. A number of studies involving recognition of tachistoscopically presented words have reported that the typical right visual field performance superiority associated with linguistic stimuli is enhanced by bilateral presentations (simultaneous stimuli in both visual half-fields) compared to unilateral presentations (stimuli in only one half-field on a trial). We have reported the same phenomenon, however, using visual spatial patterns in a search paradigm (E. W. Yund, R. Efron, & D. R. Nichols, 1990c. Brain and Cognition, 12, 117-127) and have accounted for it in terms of the operating characteristics of a visual scanning mechanism which serially examines a decaying neural representation of the stimuli. In the present experiment we attempted to exploit these operating characteristics to influence this difference between unilateral and bilateral presentations. The results not only are consistent with the assumptions of the scanning hypothesis but they also provide new information pertinent to the operating characteristics of this mechanism. 相似文献

Objective
To examine the role of psychological type in older driver performance.Methods
A convenience sample of 50 older adults was prospectively enrolled in the study. Each completed a demographic profile, the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) Step III™ instrument, a self-reported Safe Driving Behaviors Measure (SDBM), clinical tests and a standardized on-road driving evaluation yielding a fail/pass determination and Sum of Maneuvers Score (SMS).Results
Participants (M age = 72.96, SD = 4.78) who had Extraversion and Judging preferences were better drivers than those with Introversion or Perceiving preferences. Those with Sensing vs. Intuition preferences rated themselves better on the SDBM (S = 317.62, N = 305.33; t(48) = 2.19, p = .03). Those with Introvert preferences failed the on-road course with sensitivity = .714, specificity = .767, area under the curve = .76, p = .03.Conclusion
Our findings provide the basis for further research investigating personality and driving. Specifically, if the main findings are consistent in a representative sample of older drivers, personality testing may be added to a driving assessment battery. Future research must build on these findings to more clearly identify the risk associated with psychological type and examine how personality profiles can be used to keep older drivers on the road longer and more safely. 相似文献47.

Natural/social kind essentialism is the view that natural kind categories, both living and non-living natural kinds, as well as social kinds (e.g., race, gender), are essentialized. On this view, artifactual kinds are not essentialized. Our view—teleological essentialism—is that a broad range of categories are essentialized in terms of teleology, including artifacts. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments typically used to provide evidence of essentialist thinking—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2), and inferences about offspring (study 3)—we find support for the view that a broad range of categories—living natural kinds, non-living natural kinds, and artifactual kinds—are essentialized in terms of teleology. This paper uses previously untranslated excerpts from P. A. Sorokin's revolutionary journalism to reexamine the relationship between his scientific and nonscientific activities. Columns written in 1917 for the political daily Volya Naroda (The People's Will) provide insight into Sorokin's early Russian period and also prefigure the later synthesis that he called Integralism. We argue that the practice of engineering does not exist outside the domain of societal interests. That is, the practice of
engineering has an inherent (and unavoidable) impact on society. Engineering is based upon that relationship with society
(inter alia).
An engineer’s conduct (as captured in professional codes of conduct) toward other engineers, toward employers, toward clients,
and toward the public is an essential part of the life of a professional engineer, yet the education process and professional
societies pay inadequate attention to the area. If one adopts Skooglund’s definition of professional ethicsI (how we agree to relate to one another), then the codes of professional conduct lay out a road map for professional relationships.
As professionals, engineers need to internalize their codes and to realize that they have a personal stake in the application
of codes as well as the process of developing the codes. Yet, most engineers view professional codes as static statements
developed by “others” with little (or no) input from the individual engineer. Complicating the problem, questions of professionalism
(such as ethics) are frequently viewed as topics outside the normal realm of engineering analysis and design. In reality,
