Effects of Alternate Modes of Administration on Rorschach Performance of Deaf Adults

This study examined two modes of administering the Rorschach Inkblot Technique to determine which was more appropriate for a college-educated, deaf population. Twenty-four prelingually deaf adults took the Rorschach in sign language and in written English, using a counterbalanced test-retest design, and their sign and written scores were compared to each other and to 1986 norms for Exner's Comprehensive System. Seventeen variables measuring such areas as perceptual accuracy, perceptual complexity, and self-focus were found to vary more than one standard deviation from Exner's norms. Differences between sign and written conditions on several affective variables were found. Written administration can be used by examiners who are informed about deafness and aware of variables that may be underreported by written inquiry.     

Sources of life meaning among South African university students

This study explored the sources of meaning in life among a group of 243 South African university students, using a sequential exploratory mixed methods design. First, data from semi-structured questionnaires (n=40) were subjected to qualitative content analysis; next, from the emerging themes, a quantitative questionnaire was developed and administered to 203 students. Mean scores were computed and compared across gender and cultural groups. Relationships, especially with family, as well as hope, education, achievement and religion were found to be most important sources of meaning, followed by service, creative self-expression, material possessions, hobbies, health and pets. The qualitative analysis revealed that most of these sources were valued more for their perceived instrumental utility than for their intrinsic qualities.     

Equal Opportunity Objectification? The Sexualization of Men and Women on the Cover of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Rolling Stone</Emphasis>

A number of journalists and scholars have pointed to the sexual objectification of women and men in popular media to argue that Western culture has become “sexualized” or even “pornified.” Yet it is not clear whether men or women have become more frequently—or more intensely sexualized—over time. In a longitudinal content analysis of images of women and men on more than four decades of Rolling Stone magazine covers (1967–2009), we begin to answer such questions. Using a unique analytical framework that allows us to measure both the frequency and intensity of sexualization, we find that sexualized images of men and women have increased, though women continue to be more frequently sexualized than men. Yet our most striking finding is the change in how women—but not men—are sexualized. Women are increasingly likely to be “hypersexualized,” but men are not. These findings not only document changes in the sexualization of men and women in popular culture over time, they also point to a narrowing of the culturally acceptable ways for “doing” femininity as presented in popular media.     

The power motive, n power, and fear of weakness

Among 85 male undergraduates, high need for power as measured by the 1968 Winter scoring system is shown to relate to high drinking frequency (p less than .01), high alcohol consumption (p less than .05), and taking the first drink at age 16 or less (p less than .05); to the Disinhibition ("Swinger") factor on Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (p less than .05) to poor academic performance (p less than .05); and to generate a regression equation with the California Psychological Inventory that suggests qualities of personal disorderliness and intellectual aggression. These findings, considered in terms of power motive theory, are seen as replicating earlier evidence that high n Power is maladaptie, voyeuristic and power avoidant.     

Beyond the fragments of the two Victoires: A fictionalised and incomplete memoir of the two women murdered by Pierre Rivière – His sister and his mother

This paper focuses on gendered spaces in which Pierre Rivière carried out the murder of his mother, his sister and his brother. The archival work of Foucault et al. provides multiple accounts of these family murders, including the very evocative memoir written by Pierre Rivière himself in prison. The position and perspectives of the women in that text, particularly those in his immediate family, are obscured, being seen very much through the eyes of men in general, and Pierre and his father specifically. Here we attempt to cut through that obscuration with a reflexive feminist excavation of fragments from this parricide case. We borrow from multiple sources including historical literature on women at that time, changing laws relating to equality and freedom, literary ways of coming to know the perspective of another through writing, magical realist strategies fostered in arts-based social research, and therapeutic strategies for remembering traumatic events. From these Victoire and her daughter are brought to life in a womanist reading that makes Victoire's position both imaginable and supportable. Specific historical material is confined to footnotes, so maintaining its coherence whilst allowing the foregrounding of the various narratives (from the research process, from original testimonies, and from attempts to write into the spaces left by those testimonies).     

The need for power and fear of assertiveness in English-speaking South African female graduates

The present study demonstrated that Winter's (1973) power arousal procedure and scoring system for the need for power, which were developed in the United States, are valid for English-speaking South African female graduates. Subjects in whom the need for power had been aroused by a prerecorded inspirational speech (n = 20) had significantly higher n Power scores than matched nonaroused subjects (n = 20), T2(8, 31) = 56.17, p less than .01. Further, it was argued that the fear of assertiveness is a component of the need for power, and a scoring system for measuring this motive was suggested. Fear of assertiveness was shown to correlate significantly with various behavioral and dispositional measures of assertiveness, relating especially to a dependency pattern of behavior.
