The self and recollection reconsidered: how a ‘failure to replicate’ failed and why trace strength accounts of recollection are untenable

Hirshman and Lanning ( 1999 ) ‘failed to replicate’ findings reported by Conway and Dewhurst ( 1995 ). There were, however, critical differences in design between the two sets of experiments. For example, Hirshman and Lanning used a within‐subject design and a short retention interval, whereas Conway and Dewhurst used a between‐subjects design and longer retention intervals. We demonstrate in a new series of experiments that the Conway and Dewhurst findings do replicate when the correct design is used and, moreover, we show that the design differences in Hirshman and Lanning's experiments account for their findings. Finally, we develop an account in terms of the self that can explain the complex pattern of findings, a pattern which lies beyound the scope of simple trace strength models of memory. Financial prospect relativity: context effects in financial decision‐making under risk

We report three studies in which methodologies from psychophysics are adapted to investigate context effects on individual financial decision‐making under risk. The aim was to determine how the range and the rank of the options offered as saving amounts and levels of investment risk influence people's decisions about these variables. In the range manipulation, participants were presented with either a full range of choice options or a limited subset, while in the rank manipulation they were presented with a skewed set of feasible options. The results showed that choices are affected by the position of each option in the range and the rank of presented options, which suggests that judgments and choices are relative. An investigation of persuasion and sentencing severity with mock juries

The extent to which the personal characteristics of individual mock jurors affect participation and influence with other jurors within the deliberation process was the focus of this investigation. A predeliberation locus of control measure, along with two conditions of jury composition (heterogenous vs homogenous with respect to the locus of control measure) were used to investigate interactions among sentencing severity, persuasiveness in deliberation, and demographic characteristics among 96 jurors. Results indicated that group sentences were significantly more severe than predeliberation sentences and that postdeliberation shifts were significantly more pronounced for the heterogenous juries than for the homogeneous juries.     

An account of a time-limited therapeutic group in an NHS setting for women with a history of incest

Group therapy may be a useful treatment modality for women who have been sexually abused as children. The group described here involved patients referred to the British NHS psychiatric service. This closed time-limited group was run by male and female cotherapists. Reasons are advanced for advocating a mixed-sex cotherapy team. The progress of the group is described. Issues of selection, preparatory individual therapy, further individual therapy following the group, and stress on the therapists are discussed. It is suggested that the mode of referral influences the severity of presenting problems and the level of additional support likely to be required by group members. The participants' views concerning the most helpful components of therapy are recorded and self-report measures are considered alongside the assessments of the therapists.
