Several studies were conducted with speakers reading short phrases aloud while experiencing one amount or another of delayed sidetone (0.0–0.30 sec). The phrases represented different numbers of syllables, different types of syllables, different numbers of phonemes, and first and second languages. Additional syllables and unfamiliar material consistently increased the reading time of the speakers disproportionately. The reading of syllables of two and four sounds was apparently more retarded by delayed sidetone than ones of three sounds. Two-sound syllables comprised of vowel-consonants required more time to read than ones comprised of consonant-vowels. The effect of additional phonemes, with the type of syllables held constant, added linearly in the reading time of the phrases. The syllabic characteristics, the length, and probably the familiarity of the material affected the reading time nonlinearly. 相似文献

This study aimed to gain in-depth understanding of the lived identity of black African adolescents in a contemporary South African setting. A purposive sample of 59 adolescents (females = 47%; Sesotho = 46%, Setswana = 36%, Other = 18%) from the Motheo district of the Free State, South Africa, participated in focus group discussions and in-depth individual interviews. Thematic analysis suggested that black South African adolescents experience transitional identities characterised by contrasts and contradictions. Altruism, autonomy, religiosity and cultural experiences were important to their lived identities. The interplay between African rituals, Christian principles, Western values and the globalisation of cultures provided fertile ground for developing a nuanced and multi-dimensional identity as an adolescent living in contemporary South Africa. 相似文献

Persons with Down syndrome (DS) suffer from prefrontal cortex dysfunction and deficits in executive functions. The current study examined the effects assisted cycling therapy (ACT) on short-term (STM) and working memory (WM) in adolescents with DS. During ACT, the cadence of participants on a stationary bicycle was augmented with an electrical motor to 180% of the voluntary cadence. Participants completed eight weeks of ACT (n?=?17), eight weeks of voluntary cycling (VC) at their own preferred cadence (n?=?16), or eight weeks of no cycling (np?≥?.149) and working memory improved only in the ACT group (Hedge’s g?=?1.66; p?=?.003).
