People speak metaphorically about abstract concepts—for instance, a person can be “full of love” or “have a lot of love to give.” Over the past decade, research has begun to focus on how metaphors are processed during language comprehension. Much of this work suggests that understanding a metaphorical expression involves activating brain and body systems involved in perception and motor control. However, no research to date has asked whether the same is true while speakers produce language. We address this gap using a sentence production task. Its results demonstrate that visually activating a concrete source domain can trigger the use of metaphorical language drawn from that same concrete domain, even in sentences that are thematically unrelated to the primes, a metaphorical priming effect. This effect suggests that conceptual metaphors play a part in language production. It also shows that activation in the perceptual system that is not part of an intended message can nevertheless influence sentence formulation.  相似文献

Classical conditioning of olfactory conditioning stimulus (CS) with gustatory unconditioned stimulus (US) in insects has been used as a pertinent model for elucidation of neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory. However, a conditioning system in which stable intracellular recordings from brain neurons are feasibly obtained while monitoring the conditioning effect has remained to be established. Recently, we found classical conditioning of salivation in cockroaches Periplaneta americana, in which an odor was associated with sucrose solution applied to the mouth, and this conditioning could be monitored by activities of salivary neurons. Application of gustatory US to the mouth, however, leads to feeding movement accompanying a movement of the brain that prevents stable recordings from brain neurons. Here we investigated whether a gustatory stimulus presented to an antenna could serve as an effective US for producing salivary conditioning. Presentation of sucrose or sodium chloride solution to an antenna induced salivation and also increased activities of salivary neurons. A single pairing trial of an odor with antennal presentation of sucrose or sodium chloride solution produced conditioning of salivation or of activities of salivary neurons. Five pairing trials led to a conditioning effect that lasted for one day. Water or tactile stimulus presented to an antenna was not effective for producing conditioning. The results demonstrate that gustatory US presented to an antenna is as effective as that presented to the mouth for producing salivary conditioning. This conditioning system provides a useful model for studying the neural basis of learning at the level of singly identifiable neurons.  相似文献

Adding to the issues of cognitive economics (Cortes and Londoño IPBS: Integrative Psychological &; Behavioral Science 43(2):178–184, 2009) and the social psychology of “shadow economics” (Salvatore et al. IPBS: Integrative Psychological &; Behavioral Science 43(2), 2009), the carrier of economic exchanges, money, plays a key role in children’s socialization in different societies. Money given to children, ‘pocket money,’ is a negotiated settlement between children’s social demands and those of their parents. I analyze such negotiations here on the basis of a concrete case of a Korean family in which the provision of pocket money given the child was inconsistent over time. The results indicate the social ecology of money use, in both children and their parents, sets the stage for value construction of the meaning of money.  相似文献

Sociotropy and autonomy are two personality dimensions that relate to an individual's vulnerability to depression. Independent and interdependent self-construals are two distinctive cognitive formulations of the self derived from cross-cultural research. Both of these sets of constructs reflect self and other orientations. The purpose of the present study was to empirically examine the various factors that emerge when these two constructs are integrated. 652 participants responded to the Personal Style Inventory [Robins, C. J., Ladd, J., Welkowitz, J., Blaney, P. H., Diaz, R. & Kutcher, G. (1991). The Personal Style Inventory: Preliminary validation studies of new measures of sociotropy and autonomy. Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment, 16, 277–300.], the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale [Clark, D. A. & Beck, A. T. (1991). Personality factors in dysphoria: A psychometric refinement of Beck's Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale. Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment, 13, 369–388.] and the Self-Construal Scale [Singelis, T. M. (1994). The measurement of independent and interdependent self-construals. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 20, 580–591.]. Four factors emerged from a factor analysis conducted on the items of the three scales measuring sociotropy-autonomy and independent and interdependent self-construal. This study examined the effect of acute simulated microgravity on nocturnal sleep, daytime vigilance, and psychomotor performance. Each of 7 volunteers were maintained for 3 days of head-down and horizontal bed rest in a counter-balanced design. Assessment measures were polysomnographic recordings on the first night and performance on psychophysiological tasks on the second day involving subjective and objective vigilance, P300, simple reaction time tasks, and dual performance tasks. No clear difference in sleep structure was observed between the head-down and horizontal conditions, except for a slight decrease in Stage 4 for head-down. Both subjective and objective daytime vigilance, P300, and the simple RT task showed no statistical difference, although tracking performance on the dual task showed deterioration at 10:00 for the head-down condition. These results suggest that nocturnal sleep, daytime vigilance, and psychophysiological functions were not disturbed in head-down sleep conditions, although there was a mild deterioration of higher attentional function in the morning.  相似文献

The Maxwellian optical system described here is fully automated in both experimental control for psychophysical instrumentation and data gathering using a personal computer (PC) with simple interfacing and input/output processing. The system features PC-based high-speed noise-free liquid-crystal shutter control, automated light control, glow modulator tube control, and filter/wedge control. The effect of repetitive training on learned behavior has been an important subject in neuroscience. In instrumental conditioning in mammals, learned action early in training is often goal-driven and controlled by outcome expectancy, but as training progresses, it becomes more habitual and insensitive to outcome devaluation. Similarly, we recently showed in Pavlovian conditioning in crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) that a conditioned response (CR) is initially sensitive to devaluation of the unconditioned stimulus but becomes insensitive to it after extended training. It is known that habitual responses after extended instrumental training are characterized by a higher context specificity than are initial goal-directed actions in mammals. In this study, we investigated whether this is applicable to Pavlovian conditioning in crickets. In crickets that received a standard amount of training to associate an odor with water reward under illumination, CR under illumination was stronger than that in the dark. In crickets that received extended training under illumination, on the other hand, the level of CR did not differ in different light conditions. Further experiments confirmed that context specificity decreases with the development of behavioral automaticity by extended training, as opposed to findings in instrumental training in mammals. We conclude that the nature of habitual behaviors after extended training differs in different learning systems of animals.

In humans, habitual behavior often underlies dysfunctional behaviors such as drug addiction (Everitt et al. 2001) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (Gillan et al. 2011). It is for this reason that much research conducted on behavioral neuroscience and psychology has aimed to understand the effects of repetitive training on the performance of learned actions or, in other words, the development of habits (Gardner 2015; Wood and Rünger 2016). One of the most common findings in instrumental conditioning in mammals is that actions in an early stage of training are more goal-driven; i.e., they are controlled by the specific outcome (reinforcer) of their actions. However, as training proceeds, behaviors often become more automatic and independent of the actual value of the outcome, although both the goal-driven and habitual behavioral components often coexist in both early and later stages of training (Dickinson 1985; Yin and Knowlton 2006; Kosaki and Dickenson 2010; Smith and Graybiel 2014). Goal-directed actions and habitual behavior can be distinguished by using an outcome devaluation procedure in which the value of the outcome (reward) is reduced by aversive conditioning (Adams 1982; Dickinson 1985) or by outcome-specific satiation (Balleine and Dickinson 1998).We have investigated associative processes underlying Pavlovian conditioning and its possible neural substrates in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (Unoki et al. 2005; Mizunami et al. 2009; Mizunami and Matsumoto 2017; Mizunami et al. 2018), and we recently found that the conditioned response (CR) to an odor (conditioned stimulus, CS) diminishes when the value of water reward (unconditioned stimulus [US]) is reduced after satiation early in training but that it becomes insensitive to US devaluation after extended training in crickets (Mizunami et al. 2019). To our knowledge, these results provide the first evidence of increased automaticity of learned behavior by extended Pavlovian training in any animals. Crickets that received four-trial training to associate an odor CS with water US, which we refer to as standard training, exhibited no CR after water had been given until satiation before the test. On the other hand, crickets that received extended training (i.e., four conditioning trials per day on three consecutive days) exhibited the same level of CR regardless of whether they had been provided with water until satiation or not before the test.Notably, in instrumental conditioning in mammals, it has been documented that habitual behavior that is insensitive to outcome devaluation has features that are distinct from those of goal-directed behavior typically seen after limited training. The most notable one is its higher context specificity: Habitual responses are more likely to occur in the context in which training occurred than outside that context (in rats) (Thrailkill and Bouton 2015). Similarly, in humans, such context specificity is considered a hallmark of the habitual behavior formed by repetition of the same learned responses and it is considered a critical feature to which special attention must be paid in the therapy of mal-adaptive habits (Tricomi et al. 2009; Gardner 2015; Wood and Rünger 2016).The aim of this study was to determine whether the same context specificity that is observed in the habitual response after extended training in mammals is applicable to Pavlovian conditioning in insects. To do so, we performed standard or extended training for crickets under illumination, and their CRs were tested under illumination or in the dark. We used light and darkness as contexts since we observed that a change of background light level between training and testing influences the level of CRs in one paradigm of Pavlovian conditioning in crickets (Matsumoto and Mizunami 2004).  相似文献

Responses to interpersonal rejection vary widely in form and function. Existing theories of interpersonal rejection have exclusively focused on organizing these responses on a single antisocial–prosocial dimension. Accumulating evidence suggests a gap in this approach: Variability in social responses to rejection cannot solely be explained by the antisocial–prosocial dimension alone. To fill this gap, we propose the bi‐dimensional rejection taxonomy, consisting of the antisocial–prosocial x‐axis and engaged–disengaged y‐axis, a novel contribution to the literature. We demonstrate that both the x‐ and y‐axes are necessary for understanding interpersonal responses to rejection and avoiding erroneous conclusions. We also show how this new framework allows researchers to generate more nuanced and accurate hypotheses about how people respond when rejected. We further demonstrate how existing research about individual differences and situational factors that predict responses to rejection can be viewed in a new light within the bi‐dimensional rejection taxonomy. We conclude by suggesting how the taxonomy inspires innovative questions for future research, including understanding spontaneous responses and neurophysiological markers.
