This paper describes the relations of psychological distress with 11 ecological factors (5 community, 4 family, and 2 individual) among 423 older urban adolescents who are predominantly people of color. Data were obtained by means of self-report via group-administered questionnaires given between 1994 and 1996; most scales are multi-item. There is wide variation in distress. There are very few statistically significant relationships between the ecological factors and distress, and those are negligible. Girls whose parents have less education and live in extended families have higher distress; family and individual domains are correlated .04 and .03 with distress and the community domain .00, so this ecological model accounts for a mere 7%, of the common total variance in distress.  相似文献

This research explored the relationship between exposure to violence and psychological stress among adolescents. It focused on the cumulative experience of recurring community violence during the high school years, differentiated victimization from witnessing violence, and examined four conceptually separate psychological symptoms of trauma (anger, anxiety, depression, and dissociation). Considerable exposure to recurring community violence, but also considerable variation in the amount of exposure, was found in the sample of 455 first-year students at an urban college. Exposure to recurring community violence was moderately correlated with the manifestation of psychological trauma symptoms. Further, being victimized and witnessing violence had independent (as well as overlapping) relationships with trauma symptoms. It was concluded that attempts to account for psychological stress among adolescents must include exposure to community violence.  相似文献

By presenting a Poisson process of flashes to observers who hit a button as quickly as possible after each, the authors identified the system involved in simple reaction time (RT). The nonlinear kernels up to 2nd order were measured from the stimulus and response point processes. The 1st-order kernel is analogous to a histogram of simple RTs. The 2nd-order kernel shows complex patterns of nonlinear suppression and facilitation between pairs of flashes. Simple RT measured as the lag of the 1st-order kernel's peak agrees with RT from conventional discrete trial experiments. RTs are shorter and less variable when the flashes are separated by uniform rather than exponential delays, which shows that observers use the stimulus hazard function to become prepared to detect and respond to the flash.  相似文献

Investigators commonly distinguish between primary and secondary psychopathy (H. Cleckley, 1976; D.T. Lykken, 1995), though there is a lack of consensus regarding the best means to achieve this distinction. To address the validity of using R. D. Hare's (2003) Psychopathy Checklist and the G. Welsh (1956) Anxiety Scale for this purpose, the authors used 2 measures of J. A. Gray's (1987) behavioral inhibition system/behavioral activation system (BIS/BAS). Following D. T. Lykken (1995) and D. C. Fowles (1980), the authors hypothesized that primary psychopathy would be associated with a weak BIS and a normal BAS, whereas secondary psychopathy would be associated with a strong BAS and a normal BIS. Results for primary psychopathy were as predicted. Results for secondary psychopathy clearly supported the strong BAS prediction but provided mixed support for the normal BIS prediction.  相似文献

This paper describes the process of two groups of students from high schools located in the immediate vicinity of the World Trade Center grappling to make sense of the events of September 11 through the creation of a documentary chronicling their experiences. The process of creating these videos mirrored the process and curative factors of a psychotherapy group in a non-stigmatizing, innovative, and accessible format, one generated by the students themselves with the assistance of professionals in the visual and performing arts. After reviewing the literature on the potential impact of violence on adolescents and the use of group treatment, especially in school settings, as an optimal choice for this population, we describe the distinctive process of the two separate groups of students, each culminating in different expressions of their very personal experience of September 11. We understand and contextualize their process through the lens of the therapeutic dynamics and elements of group work.  相似文献

The ability to discriminate the physical states of others could be an adaptive behavior, especially for social animals. For example, the ability to discriminate illness behavior would be helpful for avoiding spoiled foods. We report on an experiment with Japanese quails testing whether these birds can discriminate the physical states of conspecifics. The quails were trained to discriminate between moving video images of quails injected with psychoactive drugs and those in a normal (not injected) condition. Methamphetamine (stimulant) or ketamine (anesthetic) were used to produce drug-induced behaviors in conspecifics. The former induced hyperactive behavior and the latter hypoactive behavior. The subject quails could learn the discrimination and showed generalization to novel images of the drug-induced behaviors. They did not, however, show discriminative behavior according to the type and dosage of the drugs. Thus, they categorized the behavior not on the basis of degree of activity, but on the basis of abnormality.  相似文献

Contrast analysis of repeated-measures data generally focuses on hypotheses when only 1 pattern of results is of theoretical interest. This article articulates a framework for contrast analysis in repeated-measures contexts in which researchers have hypotheses relevant to 1 potential pattern or multiple potential patterns of results. For example, a researcher might ask whether participants exhibit a pattern of (a) immediate symptom reduction or (b) delayed symptom reduction. Alternatively, the researcher might ask whether 2 or more groups exhibit 2 or more patterns to differing degrees. Building on the familiar logic and computational procedures for 1-pattern hypotheses, the authors present a contrast analysis framework that integrates analysis of 1-pattern and multiple-pattern hypotheses and accommodates 1 group or multiple groups of participants.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to propose a simple effect size estimate (obtained from the sample size, N, and a p value) that can be used (a) in meta-analytic research where only sample sizes and p values have been reported by the original investigator, (b) where no generally accepted effect size estimate exists, or (c) where directly computed effect size estimates are likely to be misleading. This effect size estimate is called r(equivalent) because it equals the sample point-biserial correlation between the treatment indicator and an exactly normally distributed outcome in a two-treatment experiment with N/2 units in each group and the obtained p value. Interhemispheric relay time (IHRT) is inferred from simple (visual) reaction time (SRT) by subtracting SRTs in ipsilateral hand-field conditions from SRTs in contralateral hand-field conditions. This index, the "crossed-uncrossed differential" (CUD) is a synonym of IHRT in the current literature. The CUD has been shown to be significantly moderated by experimental variables, including attentional. One reason the CUD = IHRT hypostasy persists today is that no experimental manipulation has yet been able to generate a significantly negative CUD in a subject manifesting a significant positive CUD in classical conditions. We implemented an experimental manipulation, in SRT, consisting of increasing complexity of the response after the initial key press required at detection. In a very large scale single-case experiment, we found that the CUD thus went from significantly positive in classical SRT to significantly negative in the increased response load condition.  相似文献
