We examined broad dimensions of children's personalities (total n = 1056; age = 3.5 to 12 years) based on observers' perceptions following a few hours of structured interaction. Siblings' behaviours during a 2‐hour cognitive assessment in the home were rated separately by two different observers. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses clearly revealed a two‐factor solution in three different samples. There was correspondence between parent‐rated temperament and observer‐rated factors. Cross‐sectional analyses indicated lower Plasticity among older children and higher Stability among older children. Sex differences were negligible. Plasticity and Stability were correlated in the .2 to .3 range. Most of the sibling similarity in the Plasticity was due to additive genetic influences, whereas most sibling similarity in Stability was attributable to shared environmental influences. The findings implicate a biometric factor structure to childhood personality that fits well with emerging biosocial theories of personality development. Two studies examined relationships between infants' early speech processing performance and later language and cognitive outcomes. Study 1 found that performance on speech segmentation tasks before 12 months of age related to expressive vocabulary at 24 months. However, performance on other tasks was not related to 2-year vocabulary. Study 2 assessed linguistic and cognitive skills at 4-6 years of age for children who had participated in segmentation studies as infants. Children who had been able to segment words from fluent speech scored higher on language measures, but not general IQ, as preschoolers. Results suggest that speech segmentation ability is an important prerequisite for successful language development, and they offer potential for developing measures to detect language impairment at an earlier age.  相似文献

Using the metaphor of the classroom as a courtroom promotes insights regarding our school system. For example, in the courtroom, act severity and the presence or absence of a guilty mind determine criminal sentencing. In a similar manner, in the classroom, the respective determinants of performance evaluation are exam score and the presence or absence of effort expenditure. In addition, the purposes of courtroom punishment (utilitarian and retributive) can also be observed in classroom settings and pupil impression management strategies concerning why they performed poorly can be viewed as attempts to communicate mitigating circumstances so that their punishment is lessened. Some additional consequences of this ill-fated metaphor are also examined.  相似文献

For the past 50 years the criminal justice system has distinguished sex offenders from other criminals. This has resulted in their differential treatment, with the goal being to eliminate their inappropriate behavior. This article discusses the history and status of mentally disordered sex offender (MDSO) statutes. A review of the legal issues which arise when treating a sex offender without statutory authorization is provided. A discussion of problems raised in treating the offender on both an inpatient and outpatient setting is presented. The article concludes with an analysis of the legal problems confronting the treatment provider in working with this group of individuals.  相似文献

The present study examined the effect of a target's personality and responsibility for a misdeed on a perceiver's emotions and behavior by determining the variables' impact on the perceiver's emotional reactions and willingness to help the target. A total of 134 Germans and 171 Americans were given information about the level of responsibility (low, medium, or high) for a person's infection with HIV, 2 variations of information about the target's personality (positive vs. negative), and the transmission mode of the virus (needle vs. unsafe sex). Although B. Weiner's (1995) model of responsibility partially explained the findings, the results showed that the target's personality also contributed to the perceiver's emotional and behavioral reactions.  相似文献

Light exposure during embryogenesis is necessary for functional and morphological maturation in the domestic chick. In the present study, dark incubation was demonstrated to induce a weak amnestic effect on retention for a passive avoidance task and a diminution in discriminative memory ability in day-old chicks. Putative explanations based on possible motor, attentional, or visual impairment were excluded. Light exposure of dark-reared eggs, specifically during embryonic days E19 to E20, alleviated the retention and discrimination deficits. The processes which might mediate between prehatch light stimulation and posthatch behavioral effects are discussed.  相似文献

This article studies the impact of outpatient group therapy on medical care at a large city-county hospital. Of the 65 group therapy outpatients, 33 persons met the criterion of having attended at least 12 group sessions over the course of a year. We compared a control period (the year prior to initiating group therapy) with a study period (months 6-18 after starting group) and found a sharp decrease in the number of hospitalizations and in-hospital days. There was significantly increased use of neuroleptics and nonpsychotropics and increased attendance at nonpsychiatric clinics.  相似文献

Attribution theory was used to relate causal explanations for poverty to affect and behavioral intentions. In Experiment 1, student subjects rated 13 causes of poverty on importance, the attribution of controllability, blame, affects of pity and anger, and judgments of help-giving (personal help and welfare). Two individual differences, conservatism and the belief in a just world, were also assessed. A principal components analysis categorized the causes into three types: individualistic, societal, and fatalistic. Conservatism correlated positively with a belief in the importance of individualistic causes, controllability, blame, and anger, and it correlated negatively with perceptions of the importance of societal causes, pity, and intentions to help. No systematic effects of the belief in a just world emerged. A structural equation analysis revealed that personal help is emotionally determined, whereas welfare judgments are directly related to attributions of responsibility and political ideology. Experiment 2 revealed a similar pattern of results using a nonstudent sample.  相似文献
