Predisposition factors in anorexia nervosa.

Since its first recognition, a number of researchers have endeavored to link anorexia nervosa to underlying pathology. For example, in the past, attempts were made to associate anorexia with such psychiatric disturbances as schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive and antisocial personality disorders. Most recent efforts have focused on the possible link between anorexia nervosa and affective disorders. This article reviews the literature concerned with investigating psychiatric disturbances and genetic variables hypothesized as predisposing factors in the etiology of anorexia nervosa. Particular emphasis is given to research which discusses the association between anorexia nervosa and depression. Psychopharmacological evidence and family genetics studies are reviewed. Suggestions for future research are also made.     

Digital filtering and signal processing

The design, realization, and some of the many uses of digital filters are reviewed. Computer programs coded in FORTRAN are presented for the design of lumped parameter digital and analog filter systems which are simulated on a digital computer. Explanations of the programs are accompanied by examples of their use. There is a discussion of problems arising from errors of roundoff and approximation.     

Prosody and the processing of filler-gap sentences

This study was designed to explore the effects of linguistic prosody on the processing of filler-gap sentences. We designed two experiments to determine first whether the sentence processor uses information contained in the prosodic contour of an utterance during on-line processing, and second the form that information may take. In Experiment 1, we found that prosody apparently influences when listeners posit gaps on-line. In Experiment 2, we obtained acoustic evidence that gaps are represented in the prosodic contour of an utterance. The results of this study support a view in which prosody contributes very early to on-line structure building mechanisms during sentence processing.The work reported in this paper was supported by NIH grant DC00494.

Psychoanalytic and musical perspectives on shame in Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor

Two disciplines, psychoanalysis and music, are synthesized here with an eye to the origins and vicissitudes of shame and guilt as seen in the emotional disintegration of the eponymous heroine of Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Lucia's affects and her intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics are heard in the music itself. A psychoanalytic and musical analysis of the opera, taking Lucia's dynamics as a quasi-substitute for clinical material, illuminates the intersections between certain theoretical aspects of the two disciplines. Both manifest and latent themes are expressed through the music of Donizetti's score.     

EMuJoy: Software for continuous measurement of perceived emotions in music

An adequate study of emotions in music and film should be based on the real-time measurement of selfreported data using a continuous-response method. The recording system discussed in this article reflects two important aspects of such research: First, for a better comparison of results, experimental and technical standards for continuous measurement should be taken into account, and second, the recording system should be open to the inclusion of multimodal stimuli. In light of these two considerations, our article addresses four basic principles of the continuous measurement of emotions: (1) the dimensionality of the emotion space, (2) data acquisition (e.g., the synchronization of media and the self-reported data), (3) interface construction for emotional responses, and (4) the use of multiple stimulus modalities. Researcher-developed software (EMuJoy) is presented as a freeware solution for the continuous measurement of responses to different media, along with empirical data from the self-reports of 38 subjects listening to emotional music and viewing affective pictures. The Relationship Between Spirituality,Health Beliefs,and Health Behaviors in College Students

The United States is a country in which religion and spirituality play a significant role in people’s lives. The relationship between religion, spirituality and health has long been investigated. However, most of these studies have focused only on patient populations and the elderly. The present study examines whether the same pattern of relations reported earlier is seen in a sample of healthy, college students using measures of both spirituality and religion. Health beliefs and behaviors were also examined. The results show that individuals with higher spirituality scores are more active and hold difference health beliefs than those who scored in the low spirituality group. However, some contradictions from previous research were reported in this sample. The study suggests religion may have some different pattern of relations in the overall health and health behaviors of younger, healthier populations.
