In the course of all motor behavior, the brain is limited in how much information it can process and act upon at a time. Performers
must constantly decide where to look, what to attend to, and how to time fixated information with precisely controlled actions.
The gaze can be directed to only one location at a time and information central to success must be selected from spatially
complex environments, most often under severe time constraints. The coordination of these processes is explored in this Special
issue in a number of motor tasks, including golf, soccer, law enforcement, and ballet. The papers describe the visual information
and quiet eye characteristics that underlie the ability to make decisions under complex task conditions and the relationship
between control of the gaze and task outcomes. With the attainment of motor expertise, measureable changes occur within the
gaze, cognitive, and neural systems that are useful in training, rehabilitation, and the treatment of motor deficits. 相似文献

The idea that video games or computer-based applications can improve cognitive function has led to a proliferation of programs claiming to “train the brain.” However, there is often little scientific basis in the development of commercial training programs, and many research-based programs yield inconsistent or weak results. In this study, we sought to better understand the nature of cognitive abilities tapped by casual video games and thus reflect on their potential as a training tool. A moderately large sample of participants (n = 209) played 20 web-based casual games and performed a battery of cognitive tasks. We used cognitive task analysis and multivariate statistical techniques to characterize the relationships between performance metrics. We validated the cognitive abilities measured in the task battery, examined a task analysis-based categorization of the casual games, and then characterized the relationship between game and task performance. We found that games categorized to tap working memory and reasoning were robustly related to performance on working memory and fluid intelligence tasks, with fluid intelligence best predicting scores on working memory and reasoning games. We discuss these results in the context of overlap in cognitive processes engaged by the cognitive tasks and casual games, and within the context of assessing near and far transfer. While this is not a training study, these findings provide a methodology to assess the validity of using certain games as training and assessment devices for specific cognitive abilities, and shed light on the mixed transfer results in the computer-based training literature. The federal regulations of human research were written to permit the use of discretion so that research can fit the circumstances under which it is conducted. For example, the researcher and institutional review board (IRB) could waive or alter some informed consent elements if they deem this the morally and scientifically best way to conduct the research. To do so, however, researchers and IRBs would first have to use mature moral and scientific judgment. They might also have to rely on empirical research to discover the most effective way to act on their moral sense (e.g., to discover how best to approach potential research participants and explain the nature and purpose of the research participation for which they are being recruited, to ensure comprehension and competent decision making). On discovering the most ethical way to proceed, they would then need to look to the federal regulations of human research to discover how to document their decision and justify it within that somewhat flexible regulatory structure. Unfortunately, many IRBs and researchers fail to take these sensible steps to solve ethical problems and proceed immediately to a default requirement of the regulations that places science at odds with the regulations and, ostensibly, with ethics. The following articles in this special issue are about the process of learning to engage in ethical problem solving and using the flexibility permitted by the federal regulations. These articles extricate researchers from the mindset that has gotten them into trouble, and, ideally, provoke them to use mature common sense and moral judgment. 相似文献

In three experiments rats were given short or long preexposure (4 or 10 sessions) to two compound flavours, AX and BX, according to an intermixed or a blocked schedule. Following preexposure, aversion conditioning trials were given with AX as the conditioned stimulus (CS). In Experiments 1 and 2, retardation and summation tests were then carried out to assess the inhibitory properties of B (an Espinet procedure). In Experiment 3, test trials evaluated generalization from AX to BX (the standard perceptual learning procedure). The results showed that B performed as an inhibitor of the unconditioned stimulus (US; an Espinet effect) only after long intermixed preexposure, whereas a reliable perceptual learning effect was observed both after short and after long preeexposure. The observation that B had no detectable inhibitory properties after short preexposure casts doubt on the suggestion that inhibitory learning is responsible for perceptual learning after brief exposure to AX and BX. 相似文献

Over the past few decades a large body of work from developmental neurobiology has shown that mammalian brain development is the product of dynamic and adaptive processes operating within highly constrained, but continually changing, biological and environmental contexts. The recent study of children with prenatal focal brain injury supports this dynamic view of development for humans. Children's injuries often affect substantial portions of one cerebral hemisphere, resulting in damage that would compromise cognitive ability in adults. However, longitudinal behavioral studies of this population have revealed only mild deficits. It is suggested here that children's capacity for adaptation reflects normal developmental processes operating against a backdrop of serious neural perturbation. Data from three behavioral domains--linguistics, spatial cognition and affective development--illustrate this complex profile of change. 相似文献

Two experiments are reported in which “same”-“different” reaction times (RTs) were collected to pairs of stimuli. In Experiment 1 stimuli were matrix patterns, and in Experiment 2 stimuli were digits. In both experiments, the pairs were presented simultaneously (discrimination task) and successively (memory task) for a set of nine simple and a set of nine complex stimuli. The following results were obtained: discrimination RTs were longer than memory RTs; RTs to complex stimuli were longer than RTs to simple stimuli; “same” RTs were faster than “different” RTs across all conditions except simple pattern discrimination, for which “different” RTs were faster than “same” RTs; and discrimination RTs for complex patterns were longer than would be predicted from the other conditions. Some evidence was obtained that the form of encoding for both patterns and digits in the memory task was visual. These results are discussed in terms of encoding and comparison strategies. 相似文献

Researchers have generally reported that very young children lack the orderly, sequential approach to tasks that characterizes skilled action. This study questions that assumption by investigating to what extent deficits in sequencing are a function of task complexity (type and number of elements), and to what extent sequencing ability is tied to competent task performance. Three tasks—the Lock Box, Pegboards, and Object Grouping—were each presented in two forms, varying only in number of elements. Participants were 38 children between 18 and 24 months of age. The Denver Developmental Screening Test was also administered to all children. When number of task elements increased, there was a dramatic decrease in orderliness of approach. Type of task served to exaggerate or minimize these effects. However, irrespective of task complexity, children used a consistent pattern of organization, generally two or three sequential movements. This strategy, though serving well for tasks of limited dimensions, was inadequate for tasks with more than four or five elements. Sequencing skills, as well as other aspects of performance, were significantly correlated with Denver scores. Results suggest that exceeding the limits of young children's organizing abilities may obscure actual capacities. The role of task complexity in the performance of young children is discussed as it relates to developmental processes, clinical assessment, and teaching. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between selected parent behaviors, child mealtime behavior, and infant relative weight. Subjects were 7 male and 7 female children varying in age from 12 to 30 months (mean = 23.9 months). Each subject and parents were observed during the dinnertime meal on two occasions using the BATMAN (Bob and Tom's Method of Assessing Nutrition). The children spent 58% of the mealtime eating. They spent very little time making active decisions about what and how much they ate (food requests = 2% of the time; food refusals = 1% of the time). We found significant correlations between child relative weight and (a) parental prompts to eat (r = .81, p < .001), (b) parental food offers (r = .51, p < .05), and (c) parental encouragement to eat (r = .82, p < .001). Thus, the present study suggests a relationship between certain parental variables and the relative weight of their children. 相似文献

In a concurrent validity study, a comprehensive job analysis of a mid-level secretarial position resulted in the development of highly valid employment selection instruments. Six hundred fifty-nine supervisors and 883 incumbents in 20 locations participated in the job analysis. Scores from the selection test correlated with composite ratings from a research performance appraisal (RPA) .41 (p<.001). Two forms of the test (A and B) were developed. Form A and Form B test scores and RPA composite ratings correlated .55 and .48 (p<.001) respectively. The unbiased estimate of equivalence reliability of Form A and Form B was .94.
