Excessive variability in binary choice (categorical judgment) can take the form of probability matching rather than the normatively correct behavior of deterministically choosing the more likely alternative. Excessive variability in continuous choice (judgment rating) can take the form of underconfidence, understating the probability of highly likely events and overstating the probability of very unlikely events. We investigated the origins of choice variability in terms of noise prior to decision (at the evidence stage) and at the decision stage. A version of the well-known medical diagnosis task was conducted with binary and continuous choice on each trial. Noise at evidence stage was reduced by allowing the subjects to view historical summaries of prior relevant trials, and noise at the decision stage was reduced by giving the subjects a numerical score on the basis of their continuous choice and the actual outcome. Both treatments greatly reduced variability. Cash payments based on the numerical score had a less reliable incremental effect in our experiment. The overall results are more consistent with a Logit model of decision than with a simple criterion (or maximization) rule or a simple probabilitymatching rule.  相似文献

Surface maps of brain activity can be obtained with electrophysiological and optical recordings. However, there are no established methods for determining the reliability of maps of brain activity across subject groups or across tasks within the same subject. In this paper, we use bootstrapping to establish the reliability of the locations of maxima in maps of surface brain activity of individual subjects obtained with ERP and optical (EROS) recordings and report sample analyses for two data sets. Bootstrapping is a nonparametric method for estimating statistical accuracy from the data in a single sample. The distribution of the statistic of interest is estimated by constructing “bootstrap samples” from a pool of all available cases (with replacement). Many “bootstrap replications” are obtained by calculating the statistic of interest for each sample. In the case of brain activity, many (e.g., 10,000) amplitude distributions can be derived from the data of an individual subject. Frequency counts are then computed for each recording location to establish how many times that location corresponds to a maximum. The value obtained in this fashion represents an estimate of the reliability of the observation.  相似文献

In three experiments, we independently manipulated the angular disparity between objects to be compared and the angular distance between the central axis of the objects and the vertical axis in a mental rotation paradigm. There was a linear increase in reaction times that was attributable to both factors. This result held whether the objects were rotated (with respect to each other and to the upright) within the frontal-parallel plane (Experiment 1) or in depth (Experiment 2), although the effects of both factors were greater for objects rotated in depth than for objects rotated within the frontal-parallel plane (Experiment 3). In addition, the factors interacted when the subjects had to search for matching ends of the figures (Experiments 1 and 2), but they were additive when the ends that matched were evident (Experiment 3). These data may be interpreted to mean that subjects normalize or reference an object with respect to the vertical upright as well as compute the rotational transformations used to determine shape identity.  相似文献

Roy Schafer and Merton Gill evoke two historically distinguished images of psychoanalytic treatment, one showing analysis elaborating life histories, and the other picturing the analyst as stirring transference embers into flame. A close examination of their implied theories of therapeutic action suggests that they mainly differ on whether allusions to the analyst are often localized in certain gestures or are always uniformly distributed throughout the patient's presentation. Because of this theoretical difference, these authors use different means to invite new experience, and they weigh differently the advantage of having a firm guide to turning-points in behavior against the advantage of maintaining an unconfinable curiosity.  相似文献

Alloxan-diabetic rats were hyperphagic when fed diets containing little fat, but they ate normal amounts of food when given diets rich in fat. Normal rats increased food intake to the same degree when the caloric density of their diet was decreased by reducing the content of fats or carbohydrates in isocaloric amounts. Diabetic rats did not respond substantially to changes in caloric density of their diet which were produced by altering the content of dietary carbohydrates, but they systematically increased food intake as the amount of fat in their diet was reduced. Diabetic rats ate normal amounts of a high-fat diet despite continued loss of nutrients in urine and persisting impairments in glucose utilization, fat storage, and liver glycogen deposition. These findings suggest that hyperphagia in experimental diabetes mellitus is a compensatory response to a lack of utiliziable fat fuels rather than the result of a metabolic disturbance per se.  相似文献

Individual differences in the expression and regulation of emotion are important components of social skill. The present study focused on the concealing of spontaneous expressions of happiness after winning in a competitive situation against peers. In a repeated measures design, spontaneous expressive behaviors in response to triumph were secretly videotaped when Ss (N = 38) were alone in a room and when they were with 2 fellow competitors (confederates). Edited tapes were analyzed by naive raters and trained coders. As predicted, the social context strongly influenced the expressive behaviors of Ss, providing support for a social inhibition effect. More important, the self-monitoring construct (Snyder, 1987) was helpful in explaining individual differences in expressive regulation, with high self-monitors being successful at hiding their happiness when appropriate; and they did so in particular ways. Low self-monitors did not conceal their emotions. Other findings with regard to personality and sex differences were also uncovered.  相似文献

Academics across widely ranging disciplines all pursue knowledge, but they do so using vastly different methods. Do these academics therefore also have different ideas about when someone possesses knowledge? Recent experimental findings suggest that intuitions about when individuals have knowledge may vary across groups; in particular, the concept of knowledge espoused by the discipline of philosophy may not align with the concept held by laypeople. Across two studies, we investigate the concept of knowledge held by academics across seven disciplines (N = 1,581) and compare these judgments to those of philosophers (N = 204) and laypeople (N = 336). We find that academics and laypeople share a similar concept of knowledge, while philosophers have a substantially different concept. These experiments show that (a) in contrast to philosophers, other academics and laypeople attribute knowledge to others in some “Gettier” situations; (b) academics and laypeople are much less likely to attribute knowledge when reminded of the possibility of error, but philosophers are not affected by this reminder; and (c) non-philosophy academics are overall more skeptical about knowledge than laypeople or philosophers. These findings suggest that academics across a wide range of disciplines share a similar concept of knowledge, and that this concept aligns closely with the intuitions held by laypeople, and differs considerably from the concept of knowledge described in the philosophical literature, as well as the epistemic intuitions of philosophers themselves.  相似文献

Although we are now less inclined to argue about whose treatment is entitled to be called psychoanalysis, we will understand current debates better if we revisualize what originally made psychoanalysis different from other treatments. At its birth, psychoanalysis twisted the common-sense treatments it grew out of into very peculiar shapes. In reaction to that extreme peculiarity, a process of normalizing began almost immediately and continues to this day. This process is illustrated by tracing the rise and fall of peculiarities in four aspects: medical procedure, the analyst's vision, the analyst's role, and the sense of time.  相似文献

Studies of sentence comprehension deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients suggest that language processing involves circuits connecting subcortical and cortical regions. Anatomically segregated neural circuits appear to support different cognitive and motor functions. To investigate which functions are implicated in PD comprehension deficits, we tested comprehension, verbal working memory span, and cognitive set-switching in a non-linguistic task in 41 PD patients; we also obtained speech measurements reflecting motor sequencing processes that may be involved in articulatory rehearsal within working memory. Comprehension of sentences with center-embedded or final relative clauses was impaired when they could not be understood from lexical semantic content alone. Overall comprehension error rates correlated strongly with impaired set-switching and significantly with reduced working memory span and speech motor sequencing deficits. Correlations with comprehension of different sentence structures indicate that these impairments do not represent a single deficit; rather, PD comprehension deficits appear to arise from several independent mechanisms. Deficits in cognitive set-switching or underlying inhibitory processes may compromise the ability to process relative clauses. Deficits in verbal working memory appear to impair comprehension of long-distance dependencies. Speech sequencing correlated with neither set-switching nor verbal working memory span, consistent with their being supported by independent, segregated cortico-subcortical circuits.  相似文献
