The Experience of Job Insecurity for Professional Women

In this article the authors examine the experience of job insecurity, as described by 20 women professionals living and working in a large metropolitan area on the west coast of Canada.     

Toward the Measurement of Affective Sensitivity

The current versions of the Affective Sensitivity Scale (E-80 and D-80) are media-based, multiple-choice tests of one facet of human empathy. Extensive data have been collected. Revisions have been made based on analysis of reliability and validity data. The tests yield several subscales that have research, treatment, and training potential. Theoretical constructs are proposed to explain the role of affective sensitivity in the process of empathy.     

Career Education for Students With Disabilities

Career education is as important for students in special education services as it was a decade ago. The majority of these students continue to experience extreme difficulties in making a successful transition from secondary programs to employment and independent living. The authors review the state of the art and then present a life-centered career education curricular approach to prepare students with the important competencies needed for successful adult adjustment. Sample programs are cited. The school counselor is viewed as an important contributor to this process, and several critical guidance functions are recommended by using a comprehensive guidance program model. A challenge to the professional is presented to complete the unfinished agenda that presently exists in services to students with disabilities.     

Negotiating Identity During Unemployment

The unemployment experience is viewed from the perspective of identity negotiation during a time of transition. Within this process, elements such as support from others, self-talk, marketing strategies, and focused and persistent effort play an important role. Employment counseling strategies are discussed in terms of how they promote successful negotiation.     

Primary Prevention: A Road Paved with a Plethora of Promises and Procrastinations

Long associated with the primary preventive tactic of deliberate psychological education, Norm Sprinthall discusses some of the reasons why primary prevention is so important even in secondary schools.     

Multimedia in guidance and counseling

This article examines some of the typical functions of the guidance program and describes the usefulness of multimedia as extensions of the counselor's abilities and work. Media may also be important where the counselor's own potential is limited. The author describes briefly his own research and use of affect simulation and videotape recall to accelerate the usual counseling processes and to better assure that traditional goals in counseling will be achieved. He also examines the potential of multimedia for allowing a client to view objectively his own “inner” reactions as well as his “outer” behaviors to himself and his environment.
