Unemployment: The Living Death?

Unemployment can be viewed as a “living death” because the majority of unemployed persons participating in this study went through five stages that parallel the five stages through which a terminally ill patient passes. Stress caused by unemployment resulted in a loss of income and a loss of the individual's self-image.

This article compares the day-care needs, attitudes, and practices of intact and single-parent families. Factors differ between single and married parents in the selection of child-care programs. Implications are presented for counselors and employers working with employees in the area of child-care support.     

Creative Transformation: A Design Perspective

This paper outlines a research program, which seeks to develop strategies to facilitate creative development through paradigmatic transformation. The paper begins with the notion of a “Being strategy” by exploring the Möbius Ring as a model for creativity. The model offers metaphors appropriate to design which seeks to build a connection with the underlying dynamics of subjective life. This paper then explores how these strategies can be employed within a design context to transform the consciousness of the designer.

“SIN IS BEHOVELY” IN JULIAN OF NORWICH's REVELATIONS OF DIVINE LOVE1

Julian, showing no inclination to accept the ‘free‐will’ defence nonetheless says that “sin is behovely”. She cannot mean by this that sin is necessary within the created order nor can she mean that it is completely contingent and outside the remit of divine providence. Sin's being behovely means, I argue, that it is conveniens, in a sense recognisable within some standard medieval scholastic theologies. This is to say that sin ‘fits’ with some story which God wills, a story of salvation history, in the way that events in any narrative can be said to ‘fit’ with the narrative they are events within. That for Julian we do not and cannot know the story shows her commitment to a negative theology.     

Is Incompatibilism Intuitive?

Incompatibilists believe free will is impossible if determinism is true, and they often claim that this view is supported by ordinary intuitions. We challenge the claim that incompatibilism is intuitive to most laypersons and discuss the significance of this challenge to the free will debate. After explaining why incompatibilists should want their view to accord with pretheoretical intuitions, we suggest that determining whether incompatibilism is in fact intuitive calls for empirical testing. We then present the results of our studies, which put significant pressure on the claim that incompatibilism is intuitive. Finally, we consider and respond to several potential objections to our approach.
