In a recent issue of Human Communication Research, Thomas and Levine (1994) explored the “listening” construct, examining listening from both a cognitive and behavioral point of view. In so doing, they made several inaccurate statements about my own research and positions that I have taken concerning listening. Linear models of memory (first short-term memory, then intermediate storage, then long-term memory) do not describe listening. What I have written in the past is that, like memory, listening has short-term and long-term elements, that listening research ought to examine short-term processing more carefully than before, and that any general definition of listening ought to include all elements, including long-term elements. Additional misstatements appear concerning the role of memory in the assessment of listening. In addition to these misstatements, they ignored some extremely important constructs in listening, principally that of listener involvement. In addition, the model that they present as a causal explanation for listening behaviors has several serious flaws. Nonetheless, in focusing on some nonverbal indicators of listening, they have made a real contribution to the understanding of listening as a communication skill.  相似文献

In order to study the integration of local motion signals in the human visual system, we measured directional tuning curves for the barber-pole illusion by varying two crucial aspects of the stimulus layout independently across a wide a range in the same experiment. These were the orientation of the grating presented behind the rectangular aperture and the aspect ratio of the aperture, which in combination determine the relative contributions of local motion signals perpendicular to the gratings and parallel to the aperture borders, respectively. The strength of the illusion, ie the tendency to perceive motion along the major axis of the aperture, obviously depends on the spatial layout of the aperture, but also on grating orientation. Subjects were asked which direction they perceived and how compelling their motion percept was, revealing different strategies of the visual system to deal with the barber-pole stimulus. Some individuals respond strongly to the unambiguous motion information at the boundaries, leading to multistable percepts and multimodal distributions of responses. Others tend to report intermediate directions, apparently being less influenced by the actual boundaries. The general pattern of deviations from the motion direction perpendicular to grating orientation--a decrease with aspect ratio approaching unity (ie square-shaped apertures) and with gratings approaching parallel orientation to the shorter aperture boundary--is discussed in the context of simple phenomenological models of motion integration. The best fit between model predictions and experimental data is found for an interaction between two stimulus parameters: (i) cycle ratio, which is the sine-wave gratings equivalent of the terminator ratio for line gratings, describing the effects from the aperture boundaries, and (ii) the grating orientation, responsible for perpendicular motion components, which describes the influence of motion signals from inside the aperture. This suggests that the most simple cycle (terminator) ratio explanation cannot fully account for the quantitative properties of the barber-pole illusion.  相似文献

This study investigated the accuracy benefit of incorporating patients' preferences for domains of functioning into health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measurement. Using policy-capturing techniques, 102 medical outpatients judged the HRQOL of 16 scenarios describing varying levels of functioning in 3 domains. For each participant, regression analysis determined relative domain preferences and 2 decision models were built: one incorporating (preference-weighted) and one ignoring (equally weighted) domain preferences. To assess accuracy, the average proportion of judgment variance accounted for by each model was determined and both accounted for approximately 50%. However, for patients showing the greatest differences in importance across domains, the preference-weighted model was more accurate. Findings are discussed in the context of enhancing HRQOL assessment.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of emotions by accepted and rejected children. Peer ratings and peer sociometrics were used to identify accepted and rejected children. All children were administered a task specifically designed to measure their ability to perceive emotions. This task consisted of a series of videotaped interactions involving two individuals—either two adults or two children—portraying one of three affective states: happiness, sadness, and anger. After viewing each interaction, children were asked to identify what the person was feeling. In addition, teachers and peers rated the children on their ability to perceive emotions in others. The results indicated that accepted children obtained significantly higher scores than rejected children on the identification of emotions in the interactions. Teachers and peers also rated accepted children as better perceivers of emotions than rejected children. Implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

It has been suggested that psychopaths exhibit specific deficits in cognitive processes associated with frontal lobe functioning. There is also evidence which indicates that level of intelligence may influence expression of impulse control among psychopaths. The present study investigated these hypotheses by comparing groups of 44 psychopaths and 14 normal controls selected from a sample of incarcerated male felons using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)-defined criteria. Dependent variables included several measures of cognitive flexibility, perseveration, and impulsiveness. Compared to normal controls, psychopaths showed no greater tendencies to persist in incorrect responding, disregard cues suggesting the need to modify behaviors, or proceed impulsively in problem solving. Level of intelligence was found to be a moderator variable influencing performance for psychopaths and normal controls. Results suggest that deficits in cognitive functioning are not necessarily characteristic of psychopaths across situations.  相似文献

We investigated whether anxiety influences perceptual-motor calibration in a braking to avoid a collision task. Participants performed either a discrete braking task (Experiment 1) or a continuous braking task (Experiment 2), with the goal of stopping before colliding with a stop sign. Half of participants performed the braking task after an anxiety induction. We investigated whether anxiety reduced the frequency of crashing and if it influenced the calibration of perception (visual information) and action (brake pressure) dynamically between-trials in Experiment 1 and within-trials in Experiment 2. In the discrete braking task, anxious participants crashed less often and made larger corrective adjustments trial-to-trial after crashing, suggesting that the influence of anxiety on behavior did not occur uniformly, but rather dynamically with anxiety amplifying the reaction to previous crashes. However, when performing continuous braking, anxious participants crashed more often, and their within-trial adjustments of deceleration were less related to visual information compared to controls. Taken together, these findings suggest that the timescale and nature of the task mediates the influence of anxiety on the performance of goal-directed actions.  相似文献

Human faces attract attention, evidenced by reaction time (RT) advantages over non-face stimuli in visual search tasks. In the current study, participants’ eye movements were tracked during a search task to test how the attentional capture of faces is related to looking behaviour. On each trial, participants were cued with a category name (automobiles, birds, chairs, dogs, faces, bodies, or plants). An array of images, one exemplar from each category, was then presented until participants indicated whether the target matched the cue. Results showed that faces as targets resulted in faster search times and were more likely to capture first fixations. Fixations on faces were also shorter compared to other categories. Faces captured attention, attracting first fixations, and participants appeared to be more fluent at processing faces, resulting in shorter fixations. Reaction time advantages for faces could be due to both attention capture and ultra-rapid processing.  相似文献
