Summary In free recall, the order of recall following auditory and visual presentation differs; it tends to be forward for auditory but backward for visual. The first two experiments examined to what extent this difference in output order could account for the modality effect (i.e., a superior retention of auditorily as opposed to visually presented words). Order of recall was manipulated using postcued (Experiment 1) and precued (Experiment 2) procedures. Whereas the modality effect was unaffected with postcueing it was reduced to approximately half its size with precueing. It was concluded from these two studies that although output order cannot explain the whole modality effect, it does seem to play an important role for part of the effect in some situations. Experiments 3 and 4 used a mixed-mode and a probed recall procedure, respectively, to examine the role of output interference in modality experiments. The data suggested that output interference effects were non-monotonic; they were greater for visual than for auditory early in recall, but apparently no different later in recall. This article examines national identity construal processes within the case study context of Luxembourg. Building on research highlighting the modalities of generalization from case studies, I present the country case that is Luxembourg. This social universe has a foreign population percentage of 47% and what is considered majority and minority becomes increasingly fluid. The migration process itself is fluid, ranging from daily migration, to medium-term stays, return visits and permanent immigration including uptake of citizenship. Within such a fluid environment, where national borders are permeable at the physical level of crossing borders and (national) societies are nested within societies, culture contact is a permanent feature in daily life. Nationality becomes a salient feature as culture contact tends to prompt reflection, resulting in questioning and (re-)negotiation of national identity. This affects the native population as well as the diverse immigrant population – with diversity going beyond the level of country of origin. Many individuals are also of mixed nationality and some examples for the construal process of national identity will be provided, illustrating how national identity is negotiated at individual level. Like a periscope, this country let s us adjust mirrors, permitting us to observe modes of identity construal which would otherwise be obstructed from the field of view. Family members are theorized to influence each other via transactional or systems related processes; however, the literature is limited given its focus on mother–child relationships and the utilization of statistical approaches that do not model interdependence within family members. The current study evaluated associations between self-reported parental affect, parenting behavior, and child depressive symptoms among 103 mother–father–child triads. Children ranged in age from 8 to 12 years. Higher maternal negative affect was associated with greater maternal and paternal harsh/negative parenting behavior. While maternal negative affect was directly associated with child depressive symptoms, paternal negative affect was indirectly associated with child depressive symptoms via paternal harsh/negative behavior. In a separate model, maternal positive affect was indirectly associated with child depressive symptoms via maternal supportive/positive behavior. These results highlight the importance of simultaneously modeling maternal and paternal characteristics as predictors of child depressive symptoms. 相似文献
