On-line Apple II for the recording and analysis of complex motor movements

The system described here was prompted by the need for a method of separately recording various components of a complex motor act. The task involved vertical, horizontal, and turn components. Our particular interest was the relation between integration of components and level of skill demonstrated. The peripheral equipment provides a separate analogue output for each component and plugs directly into the Apple’s game-paddle input. Trial data are stored directly on disk and can be retrieved for subsequent graphical plotting and analysis. The Apple II accommodates up to four inputs and returns results for movements as fast as .05 sec. The programming system can be used, without modification, for a wide variety of motor tasks. No additional interface or clock is required.     

Near-fatal experience,crisis intervention and the anniversary reaction

Grief and death-related reactions have been growing psychotherapeutic concerns during the last several decades. Beginning with Freud'sMourning and Melancholia, a host of depth-psychologists have devoted extensive attention to the psychodynamics of tramatic object-loss. More recently studies of biological resuscitation and phases of near-fatal experience have been widely researched. Concurrently, investigations of stress syndromes have sought to offer suggestions to those involved in the intervention of crisis effects. The author integrates several pronounced insights derived from this literature while shifting their dominant tenors of object loss or life after death recollections to repercussions associated with passive assults to the self. His own pre-terminal reflections, experimental research and psychoanalytic ministry form the foundation of his conclusions for pastoral counselors dealing with victimized clients who re-experience acute anxiety close to the anniversary of their injury.He also serves as Pastoral Consultant to The Canterbury House of Northwestern, Evanston, as well as All Saint's and Holy Innocents' Episcopal Churches, Atlanta.     

“Taking charge” of stigma: Treatment seeking alleviates mental illness stigma targeting men

This research provided a novel experimental test of mental illness stigma and reactions to treatment seeking decisions for male and female targets. In Experiment 1 (N = 420), robust stigma emerged for targets exhibiting major depressive disorder; they were rated as less likeable, competent, and hirable than comparable normatively functioning targets. These results were unaffected by target gender. In Experiment 2 (N = 322), moderated mediation analysis revealed that a depressed male target embodying masculine stereotypes by seeking professional treatment experienced less stigma than an identical male target who did not seek treatment (and respect mediated this difference). For female targets, treatment seeking did not impact respect or stigma. Implications for the gender gap in treatment seeking and relevant interventions are discussed.     

Annihilating the Nothing: Hegel and Nishitani on The Self-Overcoming of Nihilism

In Nishitani’s The Self-Overcoming of Nihilism, Nishitani explores, among other related topics, the history of the problem of Nihilism in the West. Conspicuously absent from Nishitani’s historical analysis is the thought of Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, who famously raised the charge of Nihilism against Fichte’s philosophy in 1799. As is evident from a variety of Hegel’s texts, Hegel explicitly responds to Jacobi’s charge against Speculative Idealism and designs his philosophy in part as a response to Jacobi’s charge of Nihilism. On the one hand, Nishitani fails to appreciate Hegel’s philosophy as a response to the problem of Nihilism because he has an incomplete possession of the history of the problem. On the other hand, Nishitani’s critique of Hegel begs the question. Nishitani’s dogmatic rejection of Hegel appears to be grounded in his methodological approach to the philosophy of history, which assumes the falsehood of Hegel’s account. Jacobi’s charge against Speculative Idealism consists in the Idealist’s failure to account for the very existence of the world. On his view, philosophy is Nihilism because the world disappears completely from philosophical speculation. Hegel attempts to overcome this charge of Nihilism by re-thinking the structure and content of reason.     

Toxic Handshake—A Case Study of the Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan represents a virulent belief system that continues to spawn hatred toward non-Whites, especially African Americans and Jews. This non-risk-free research or autobiographical case study consists of three exposures to the Klan during a time span of fifty years. Part I takes place during a small town parade in Missouri, 1954. Nearly forty years later Part II begins in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and develops in four other locations, including Freud's London and Vienna homes. Part III occurs at a recent gun show in North Georgia. Collectively, these experiences of hatred illustrate a social cancer that is metastasizing in our country. White supremacy is an insidious psychosocial pathology that faces the pastoral counselor of today, particularly in rural communities scattered throughout the southern and midwestern United States.     

Counseling Biracial Students: A Review of Issues and Interventions

Racial identity and self‐concept development in biracial students are examined. Because of biracial students' high incidence of academic and behavioral problems, this article includes a compilation of strategies for school counselors as well as schoolwide programs designed to reduce prejudice toward and increase acceptance of these students. A case study is used to illustrate strategies. Se examinaron la identidad racial y el desarrollo del autoconcepto en estudiantes birraciales. Debido a la alta incidencia de problemas académicos y de comportamiento por parte de estudiantes birraciales, este artículo incluye una recopilación de estrategias para consejeros escolares, además de programas escolares integrales designados para reducir los prejuicios contra estos alumnos e incrementar su aceptación. Se emplea un estudio de caso para ilustrar las estrategias.     

Historical Emissions and the Carbon Budget

How should the world's remaining carbon budget be divided among countries? We assess the role of a fault‐based principle in answering this question. Discussion of the role of historical emissions in dividing the global carbon budget has tended to focus on emissions before 1990. We think that this is in part because 1990 seems so recent, and thus post‐1990 emissions seem to constitute a lesser portion of historical emissions. This point of view was undoubtedly warranted in the early 1990s, when discussion of fault‐based principles in this context began. While this view still has some intuitive force, we find that it and the associated focus on pre‐1990 emissions are now out of date. Emissions since 1990 in fact constitute a large and rapidly increasing proportion of emissions since 1750 – approximately half of the carbon emissions due to fossil fuel use and cement production, at the time of writing. We show that a restricted fault‐based principle, according to which emissions should be divided among countries on the basis of their emissions since 1990, is both viable and powerful. We consider standard objections to a fault‐based principle in this context, how such a principle might more concretely be applied, and its likely implications.
