This article is an ethnographic account of the Social Section of Arabic language Islam Online. It focuses on what Krüger has called the ‘hidden knowledge’ of religious websites. Drawing on longitudinal fieldwork in the Islam Online offices in Cairo, Egypt, this article brings forth and analyzes rich data about Islam Online employees’ work practices and meaning-making activities. Drawing on an organizational ethnographic approach, this article highlights new aspects of this influential Islamic website. More specifically, the author employs Linde’s concept of an ‘institutional narrative’ to conceptualize and analyze the strong institutional identity and corporate values that are in play in everyday work practices. Focusing on key tropes such as ‘the message’, ‘professional’, ‘pluralistic’, and ‘pioneers’, the article demonstrates how Islam Online’s Islamist institutional narrative includes a creation story and set of organizational values that play out in the execution of work tasks. Moreover, the author argues that the objective of the emic concept of “the message” is to contribute to both self- and societal-reform in the Arab world, and that Islam Online’s own work environment represents a micro-cosmos of this ideal. 相似文献

The key aim of the present research was to study the “functionality” of two global variables in the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire and to examine the appropriateness of different cutoff points of these variables for prevalence estimation. Several empirical and conceptual analyses strongly attested to the functionality of the two selected variables in terms of construct validity and selected measurement properties. Similarly, a number of analyses indicated that (having been bullied/having bullied other students) “2 or 3 times a month” was a reasonable and useful lower‐bound cutoff point. With this cutoff point, “involved” students, victims, and bullies differed very markedly and in clearly different ways from “non‐involved” students in conceptually related variables. Prevalence estimates derived in this way can be conveniently obtained, have a reasonably well‐defined meaning, can be easily understood by users, and can be reproduced unambiguously by different researchers/administrators and at different times. An important background for the article is the fact that several common methods, including peer nominations, are not well suited for prevalence estimation. Prevalence data for victims, bullies, and bully‐victims are also presented. All data were derived from the New Bergen Project Against Bullying, comprising a sample of 5,171 students from 37 schools in the town community of Bergen, Norway. At the time of the data collection, the spring of 1997, the 2,544 girls and 2,627 boys were in grades 5 through 9, with modal ages of 11 through 15 years. Aggr. We examined associations between basal respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in conjunction with RSA regulation with the hypothesis
that their interaction would explain unique variability in children’s prospective adjustment 2 years later. Participants were
176 children (98 girls; 78 boys) in middle childhood. RSA regulation was assessed through social and problem-solving challenges.
Parents reported on children’s internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Interactions between RSA baseline and regulation
to the social stressor predicted children’s later internalizing symptoms. Interactions between RSA baseline and responding
to the problem-solving stressor predicted children’s externalizing symptoms. The highest levels of internalizing symptoms
were predicted for children with both lower basal RSA and higher RSA suppression. The highest levels of externalizing symptoms
were predicted for children who demonstrated lower basal RSA in conjunction with RSA augmentation. Findings highlight the
importance of the contemporaneous consideration of basal RSA and RSA regulation in the prediction of developmental psychopathology

This paper explores the perceived challenges facing clinical genetics practitioners in multicultural Australia. Focus groups
conducted with 53 practitioners explored: 1) participants’ experiences and definitions of cultural diversity; 2) their use
of educational resources with clients; 3) their experiences with culturally diverse groups/individuals in practice; 4) their
experiences working with interpreters; and 5) the impact culturally specific educational training and/or experiential learning
had on their confidence or practice when dealing with culturally diverse clients. Participants viewed culture as extending
beyond traditional definitions such as ethnicity, language and religion. Most respondents had experienced positive results
working with health care interpreters, although at times, this was a challenge for the family as they preferred privacy and
the use of family members as interpreters. Another commonly reported challenge was the limited availability of reliable, culturally
appropriate translated resources. Some participants expressed concern that learning theories about specific cultures may lead
to stereotypes and that opportunities for formal cultural competence training were limited. Recommendations for practice include
the targeting of educational resources to meet the needs of a diverse community and placing cultural competence on the agenda
for ongoing training and maintenance of professional standards for clinical genetics practitioners to avoid the current ad

The genetics of suicide is increasingly recognized and relevant for mental health literacy, but actual beliefs may lag behind current knowledge. We examined such beliefs in student samples (total N = 686) from Estonia, Malaysia, Romania, the United Kingdom, and the United States with the Beliefs in the Inheritance of Risk Factors for Suicide Scale. Cultural effects were small, those of key demographics nil. Several facets of construct validity were demonstrated. Marked differences in perceived plausibility of evidence about the genetics of suicide according to research design, observed in all samples, may be of general interest for investigating lay theories of abnormal behavior and communicating behavioral and psychiatric genetic research findings. 相似文献
