Application of four procedures for detecting differential item functioning in polytomous items

The authors describe and use four methods for detecting Differential Item Functioning in polytomous items: Mantel, Generalized Mantel-Haenszel (GMH), Ordinal Logistic Regression (RLO), and Discriminant Logistic Regression (RLD). For each procedure, the theoretical model and the measure of effect size are described. The data from the "Reading Comprehension Test" from the PISA2000 evaluation program were analyzed using a cross-validation design. Two booklets were independently evaluated in the American and Spanish samples. Adopting as decision rule the significance of the statistical test and the measurement of the effect size, agreement among the evaluated procedures was total for two of the analyzed items.     

Changes in perceived contrast,reaction time,and pattern-specific evoked potentials due to stimulus duration

Using patterned stimulation without luminance change, the authors manipulated the stimulus duration and measured three variables: the magnitude of contrast experience, simple reaction time, and the amplitude of pattern-specific visual evoked potentials. While contrast experience, measured by the scaling method, indicated no saturation below 85 msec, the other two variables saturated below 40 msec. The lower saturation value of the pattern-specific evoked potential is considered as the limit of the correlation between psychophysical measures and brain electric activity. This suprathreshold divergence can be seen as evidence that processes underlying the pattern-specific visual evoked potential components cannot be considered as mechanisms mediating subjective experience of spatial contrast.     

Logical Truth and Tarskian Logical Truth

This paper examines the question of the extensional correctness of Tarskian definitions of logical truth and logical consequence. I identify a few different informal properties which are necessary for a sentence to be an informal logical truth and look at whether they are necessary properties of Tarskian logical truths. I examine arguments by John Etchemendy and Vann McGee to the effect that some of those properties are not necessary properties of some Tarskian logical truths, and find them unconvincing. I stress the point that since the hypothesis that Tarski's definitions are extensionally correct is deeply entrenched, the burden of proof is still on the shoulders of Tarski's critics, who have not lifted the burden. Current Trends in Substructural Logics

This paper briefly overviews some of the results and research directions. In the area of substructural logics from the last couple of decades. Substructural logics are understood here to include relevance logics, linear logic, variants of Lambek calculi and some other logics that are motivated by the idea of omitting some structural rules or making other structural changes in LK, the original sequent calculus for classical logic.     

The Long Journey to Becoming an Emancipated Woman and a Relational Psychotherapist

This article contains a biography of the author, taking into consideration the cultural landscape in which she was immersed all along. It also shows how her search for an identity and a position in the world shaped her orientation, first to feminism and then to psychotherapy. Beginning with her belonging to Orbach’s self-help groups and evolving to a feminist and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist, she later became a bioenergetic analyst only to join the relational turn in psychoanalysis after having met Jessica Benjamin in 2002 and having published a number of papers to deconstruct classical psychoanalytic thinking with the help of Judith Butler, Nancy Chodorow, Emilce Dio Bleichmar, and many others.     

Low platelet monoamine oxidase activity in sensation-seeking bullfighters

In this study, we attempt to demonstrate an association between low platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, as assessed by isotopic methods, and the stable behavioral pattern of sensation- and risk-seeking of professional bullfighters. Sixteen professional bullfighters were studied and compared with a control group of 46 healthy control subjects who did not engage in risky jobs or activities. The group of bullfighters had significantly reduced platelet MAO activity compared with the control group (P<0.05). Bullfighters were shown to be significantly more extroverted and sensation-seeking than controls on various temperament scales. A predisposition to engage in risky activities (eg, bullfighting) and sensation-seeking could be partly conditioned by the presence of biological components of personality manifested by a significantly decreased platelet MAO activity.
