Shyness is a temperamental trait characterized by a fear of novel social situations and self-consciousness in situations of perceived social evaluation. From early childhood to adolescence, shyness is associated with a host of negative outcomes including poor peer relationships (e.g., exclusion, victimization), internalizing problems (e.g., anxiety, depression), and school adjustment difficulties (e.g., lack of academic success, school avoidance). It has been suggested that shyness may be less socially acceptable for boys than for girls because it violates gender norms related to male social assertion and dominance. In the current paper, we review the empirical support for this assertion. More specifically, we examined: (1) possible gender differences in the prevalence of shyness; (2) how important others (i.e., parents, teachers, peers) might respond differentially to shyness in boys compared to girls; and (3) potential gender differences in the implications of shyness across multiple domains. Most of this research has been conducted with school-aged children from Canada and the United States. However, we also explore findings from emerging cross-cultural studies in this area. Possible conceptual mechanisms that may underlie differences in the potential implications of shyness for boys and girls are then discussed, as well as several prospective directions for future research.  相似文献

According to an action-specific account of perception, the perceived speed of a ball can be a function of the ease to block the ball. Balls that are easier to stop look like they are moving slower than balls that are more difficult to stop. This was recently demonstrated with a modified version of the classic computer game Pong (Witt & Sugovic, 2010). However, alternative explanations can also explain these results without resorting to nonoptical effects on perception. To examine whether blocking ease influences perception, we conducted several experiments. We examined whether the apparent effects were due to the type of perceptual judgment, the timing of the judgment, and the effectiveness of the paddle. The results are consistent with a perceptual explanation, and help build a case that blocking ease can influence perceived speed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of child gender and maternal gender-role attitudes in mothers’ reactions to hypothetical vignettes depicting their preschool-aged child displaying aggressive and shy behaviors. Participants were 78 mothers of preschool-aged children (43 girls, 35 boys; M age?=?47.44?months, SD?=?11.00) living in a mid-sized city in Ontario, Canada. Mothers provided reports of their gender-role attitudes and rated their expectancies and emotional/behavioral reactions following hypothetical vignettes depicting their child displaying physically aggressive and shy-withdrawn behaviors. It was hypothesized that mothers would respond with more negative (and less positive) emotions and expectancies in response to children’s gender-incongruent problem behaviors (i.e., shyness among boys, aggression among girls). It was further hypothesized that these gender effects would be more pronounced among mothers espousing more traditional (i.e., less egalitarian) gender-role attitudes. Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that mothers anticipated more negative consequences to aggression among boys than among girls. Several significant interaction effects also emerged between child gender and maternal gender-role attitudes, particularly with regards to children’s shyness. Among mothers of boys, a more egalitarian gender-role attitude was associated with greater anticipated benefits of shyness, and both more positive and more negative emotional responses to shyness. For mothers of girls, however, the opposite pattern emerged. Results provide some support for the notion that mothers may enforce gender-typical social behaviors in their children, particularly if they themselves hold more traditional gender-role attitudes.  相似文献

Research on and with the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration (P-F) Study and its precursors, 1934-1974, is presented. Investigations with the original versions of the P-F in English and the parallel, standardized versions in Europe. Asia and the Americas are covered. More than 500 articles and books are organized by topic in a Citation Index giving authors and dates. The available references for a given topic can then be readily located. The major topics include basic (construct) research, reliability, validity and pragmatic applications. These applications pertain to developmental and individual differences, clinical disorders, antisocial behavior, personnel selection, counseling and therapy, educational and school psychology, cultural and differences, and experimental psychodynamics.  相似文献

Perceptual judgments of objects, such as judgments of their size, distance, and speed, are influenced by the perceiver’s ability to act on these objects. For example, objects that are easier to block appear to be moving slower than objects that are more difficult to block. These effects are known as action-specific effects. Recent research has found similar patterns when a person observes someone else act: When the other person’s task is more difficult, objects look farther away and faster to the observer, whereas when the other person’s task is easier, the objects look closer and slower to the observer. These previous findings that another person’s ability penetrates into perceptual judgments challenge the idea that action-specific effects are specific to the perceiver’s own abilities. However, in the present study, we show that the apparent effects of another person’s ability on the observer’s judgments are actually due to the observer’s own abilities as if he or she was in the other person’s situation. This implicates a type of self-projection motor simulation mechanism. The results also preserve the critical idea that action-specific effects are perceiver specific and, consequently, that they could be adaptive for planning future actions.  相似文献

In our recent review article (Doey et al. 2013), we provided an overview and synthesis of the extant literature pertaining to gender differences in the prevalence and implications of childhood shyness. In response to this review, Sex Roles solicited three commentaries from noted experts in the field. This rebuttal is meant to briefly address some of the central themes raised in these commentaries. Our comments focus on the issues of parlance i.e., nomenclature, operationalization, and assessment, places (i.e., the importance of considering context), process (i.e., mechanisms that may underlie gender differences in shyness), and paradox (comparing gender differences in the prevalence of shyness versus internalizing problems).  相似文献
