Memory of imagined actions: Imagining oneself or another person

Summary In two experiments, three modes of action encoding were compared: overt enactment, self-imagination, and imagination of another person performing the actions. Overt enactment and imagining self-performance of an action are mainly assumed to involve motor-kinesthetic representations, whereas imagining another person is thought to place more demands on the visual representational system. Previous paired-associate learning data on memory of action verbs showed that motor-kinesthetic imagery hinders pair integration, but that pair integration is facilitated by visual imagery. The comparison of free and cued recall of actions learned from lists of concrete nouns supports the assumption that the representational properties of overt enactment and self-imagination differ from those involved in the imagining of another person.     

A study of Islamic preaching in France

Since the beginning of the 1980s France has witnessed intensive preaching activity in Muslim quarters. It is impossible to understand the significance of this phenomenon of the reislamization and mobilization of the community without first paying attention to the function of liturgical preaching in Islam, i.e. the khutba. In France the selection of the preachers is determined not only by the rules of supply and demand but also by the dynamics of external spheres of influence. This focus on the spoken word is manifested in many different ways within the very heart of the Muslim community. All the same, the western context in which it evolves modifies it palpably. A process of inculturation can already be noticed.     

Responding to allegations of scientific misconduct

Institutions in France are not yet well prepared to respond to allegations of scientific misconduct. Following a serious allegation in late 1997. INSERM,* the primary organization for medical and health-related research in France, began to reflect on this subject, aided by scientists and jurists. The conclusions have resulted in establishing a procedure to be followed in cases of alleged misconduct, and also in reinforcing the application of good laboratory practices within each laboratory. Guidelines for authorship practices and scientific assessment must also be considered. Even though each institution must remain responsible for responding to allegations of scientific misconduct within its doors, INSERM would like to see national, European, and international co-ordination about the methods of such response. Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (eng. French National Medical Research Institute) is known as INSERM. Mutism in an Adult Following Hypertensive Cerebellar Hemorrhage: Nosological Discussion and Illustrative Case

Mutism after cerebellar injury has been associated with tumors, hemorrhage, and surgery of midline cerebellar structures. Literature review identified 54 cases, primarily in children after surgical splitting of the inferior vermis. We present a 47-year-old who developed transient mutism after cerebellar hemorrhage. This represents the first report of transient mutism in an adult with neither tumor nor brainstem infarction and documents the importance of cerebellar structures for initiation and production of speech in adulthood. This case further differs from those previous because of the long mute period and the subsequent return of continued ataxic and dysarthric speech.     

THERE ARE TWO WORD-LENGTH EFFECTS IN VERBAL SHORT-TERM MEMORY:

Abstract— In the word-length effect (WLE), lists of shorter words are better recalled than lists of longer words This effect a fundamental to decay-based theories of verbal short-term memory, such as the phonological loop theory (Baddeley, 1986) The WLE has been attributed to the time taken to articulate words, not their structure, a critical point in the debate between decay and interference theories However, this article, we show that the traditional WLE comprises two opposed effects an advantage for words spoken more quickly (short words in terms of duration) and an advantage for words with more elements (long words in terms of complexity) We also report two interactions a disadvantage for a midlist change in duration and an advantage for a midlist change in complexity These results contradict simple decay- based theories and establish the importance of interference in short- term memory We discuss whether decay is also required     

Linking mechanisms of work–family conflict and segmentation

Despite the abundance of work and family research, few studies have compared the linking mechanisms specified in theoretical models of work–family conflict and segmentation. Accordingly, the current study provides a greater degree of empirical clarity concerning the interplay of work and family by directly examining the indirect effects of work–family conflict linkages and the direct effects of segmentation linkages on work and family satisfaction outcomes. Results, based on 209 samples and 994 effect sizes, indicate that indirect effect work–family conflict models explain 2.20% and 6.20% of the variance in job and family satisfaction outcomes, whereas direct effect segmentation models explain 54.10% and 48.50% of the variance in job and family satisfaction outcomes. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.     

Self-reported adjustment of teenagers at soccer training centers: the Soccer Trainee Adjustment Scale

The aim of this study was to develop a questionnaire to measure adjustment of teenagers at soccer training centers, particularly newcomers. The Soccer Trainee Adjustment Scale was adapted from the Institutional Integration Scale and assesses the trainee's adjustment to operating and social activities. The scale was tested on a sample of 136 trainees from four soccer centers. Exploratory analysis indicated that the 13 items formed five factors: peer adjustment, boarding supervisor adjustment, soccer adjustment, scholastic adjustment, and boarding adjustment. These factors had internal consistency reliability ranging from .76 to .94.     

‘The Trojan horse of philosophia perennis’: Mircea Eliade's quest of spiritual transformation

This essay highlights one of Mircea Eliade's most important legacies to Religious Studies. The Romanian scholar never reduced the spiritual history of humankind to a mere socio-cultural construction. He defended his stance against the naturalist scholars and resisted the stream of ‘scientific atheism’ that is now towering above Religious Studies departments. The article also underlines Eliade's early intellectual influences and his idea of ‘creative hermeneutics’. I hope that this essay will contribute to a better understanding of Eliade's philosophical presuppositions.
