Finger tracking has the potential to expand haptic research and applications, as eye tracking has done in vision research. In research applications, it is desirable to know the bias and variance associated with a finger-tracking method. However, assessing the bias and variance of a deterministic method is not straightforward. Multiple measurements of the same finger position data will not produce different results, implying zero variance. Here, we present a method of assessing deterministic finger-tracking variance and bias through comparison to a non-deterministic measure. A proof-of-concept is presented using a video-based finger-tracking algorithm developed for the specific purpose of tracking participant fingers during a psychological research study. The algorithm uses ridge detection on videos of the participant’s hand, and estimates the location of the right index fingertip. The algorithm was evaluated using data from four participants, who explored tactile maps using only their right index finger and all right-hand fingers. The algorithm identified the index fingertip in 99.78 % of one-finger video frames and 97.55 % of five-finger video frames. Although the algorithm produced slightly biased and more dispersed estimates relative to a human coder, these differences (x=0.08 cm, y=0.04 cm) and standard deviations (σx=0.16 cm, σy=0.21 cm) were small compared to the size of a fingertip (1.5–2.0 cm). This study explored the role of gender, ethnicity, religiosity, and sexual attraction in adolescents’ acceptance of same-sex sexuality and gender non-conformity. Using an intersectionality perspective, we also tested whether the effects of gender, ethnicity, and religiosity on adolescents’ attitudes would function differently in adolescents with and without same-sex attractions. Data for this study were collected by means of a paper questionnaire completed by 1,518 secondary school students (mean age?=?14.56 years, SD?=?1.05) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The sample was 48.1% female and 51.9% male. Approximately one third of adolescents in the sample were of a non-Western ethnic background (32.3%, n?=?491) and 7.5% of the participants (n?=?114) reported experiencing same-sex attractions. Results of our analyses showed that adolescents in our sample who were male, of non-Western ethnicity, and who were more religious (as indicated by frequency of religious service attendance), were less accepting of same-sex sexuality and gender non-conformity in comparison to female, Western and less religious peers. We also found a significant interaction effect between religiosity and sexual attractions, but only in relation to evaluation of same-sex attracted, gender non-conforming females. The negative effect of religiosity on acceptance of same-sex attracted, gender non-conforming females was stronger among those adolescents who reported same-sex attractions. 相似文献

A workshop was conducted as part of the International Metropolis Conference held in Vienna, Austria in September 2003. The Metropolis Project is meant to facilitate research in the area of migration that can optimally inform policy. In this context, a workshop was conducted with the objective of discussing how policy-relevant research on discrimination could be conducted internationally. Four broad areas were addressed: ‘key stakeholder’ involvement, obtaining ethical and other forms of approval, international, national and local funding opportunities, and qualitative and quantitative methodology and questionnaire development. Viewpoints represented included those of non-governmental organizations, researchers, health professionals, and policy-makers/implementers. Countries represented in the discussions included Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Key conceptual differences included how best to define discrimination, societal acknowledgement of discrimination, the meaning of ‘race’, ‘racism’, ‘national’, and ‘migrant’, and perceptions of national identity. 相似文献

The emotional closeness between mothers andtheir children was examined to determine if motherdaughter pairs exhibit closer emotional relationshipsthan mother son pairs. Forty-one mother childpredominantly Caucasian dyads were videotaped during asemistructured play setting. The children were 4 (10males and 10 females) and 5 years of age (10 males and11 females). Emotional closeness was defined as physical proximity, mutual eye contact, and global levelof enjoyment. Results demonstrated that compared toboys, girls were physically closer to their mothers,engaged in more mutual eye contact with their mothers, and were rated higher on global enjoyment.Results are consistent with Chodorow's theory thatgender identity development is related to the emotionalrelationships that develop between children and their mothers. 相似文献

State and trait anxiety: A cross-cultural comparison of Chinese and Caucasian students in Canada 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Chinese people immigrating to North America are subject to specific Stressors in moving to a new country, and, furthermore,
these factors interact with their cultural background to produce higher levels of anxiety than are commonly believed to exist.
The present study compared the responses of 60 Chinese and 60 Caucasian Canadian students to questionnaires measuring multidimensional
trait and state anxiety. As predicted, the Chinese students endorsed significantly higher levels of trait anxiety for ambiguous
situations and daily routines than did the Caucasians. Moreover, they were also significantly more likely than the Caucasians
to rate the research situation as being ambiguous and threatening. Of all the possible background variables tested, English
fluency was the single most powerful covariate that was predictive of the results, with those students who indicated a lowered
English proficiency tending to score higher across all four facets of trait anxiety. As the Chinese students were also significantly
more likely than the Caucasians to indicate a lower level of English fluency, the present results are supportive of the likelihood
that lack of familiarity with the adopted culture and language may contribute to adjustment difficulties in Chinese immigrants.

This article aims to open a new line of debate about religion in public schools by focusing on religious ideals. The article
begins with an elucidation of the concept ‘religious ideals’ and an explanation of the notion of reasonable pluralism, in
order to be able to explore the dangers and positive contributions of religious ideals and their pursuit on a liberal democratic
society. We draw our examples of religious ideals from Christianity and Islam, because these religions have most adherents
in Western liberal democracies that are the focus of this article. The fifth and most important section “Reasonable pluralism
and the inclusion of religious ideals in public secondary schools” provides three arguments for our claim that public schools
should include religious ideals, namely that they are important to religious people, that they are conducive for the development
of pupils into citizens of a liberal democracy, and that the flourishing of pupils as adults is advanced by encountering religious
ideals. We also offer a more practical reason: religious ideals can more easily be included within public education than religious
dogmas and rules.

Attachment studies with diverse populations enrich the understanding of infants’ socioemotional development by documenting both universal and idiosyncratic aspects of attachment. Given the effects of attachment in children's socioemotional outcomes, such studies are necessary to investigate the impact of children's sensory impairments on attachment development. Yet, very little attachment research has focused on infants with visual impairment (VI infants), a population in which infant–caregiver emotional exchanges through visual means are reduced/absent. We investigated the applicability of the Strange Situation Paradigm (SSP), with added instructions to compensate for degraded visual input, in 20 VI infants (with no additional disabilities and who were receiving developmental counseling). In all but 1 of the SSPs coded, VI infants displayed observable attachment behavior that was classifiable. Nineteen VI infants showed attachment by 12 months of age. Across the ages tested (fractional age range = 0.9–2.33 months), most VI infants’ attachment patterns were classified as secure and organized. 相似文献

Historically, evil, illness, and suffering have been interpreted in religious communities as having the imprint of Providence. Many traditions continue to hold to this world view. But increasingly with the burgeoning of technology and the advent of palliative care, more and more religious persons struggle to maintain this belief. Suffering as such no longer holds the kind of "purifying effect" that it once was thought to have. Indeed, particularly with our capacity to mitigate physical suffering with drugs such as methadone and morphine, the belief that all suffering has a purpose seems to have lost its appeal. This article examines and challenges the underlying assumptions that continue to undergird religious communities--particularly sacramental ones--that evil, illness, and suffering are linked to notions such as sin and healing. 相似文献
