Remote memory in a patient with circumscribed amnesia 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
It has been suggested that extensive and severe remote memory loss is not a component of a circumscribed amnesic syndrome but may be attributable to problem solving and retrieval deficiencies associated with the frontal lobe damage which is present in some amnesic patients. In order to assess this notion, retrograde amnesia was studied in a patient, W.H., who had no apparent cortical damage revealed by radiological examination, and who evidenced no major cognitive deficiency other than amnesia. Regardless of whether remote memory was measured by recall or recognition procedures, patient W.H. exhibited impaired memory for information from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, but was unimpaired in retrieving information from the 1940s and 1950s. These results demonstrate that retrograde amnesia can occur in patients who have a circumscribed memory deficit. 相似文献

In Experiment 1, 8 monkeys, experimentally naive with regard to visual stimuli, were trained on identity matching with a two-sample set based on two-dimensional stimuli. On a subsequent test employing two new samples, 4 of the 8 applied the matching rule to the new sample stimuli (as defined by our transfer criterion), and 3 showed substantial savings in learning to match the new samples. Two of these 3 transferred the matching rule when given a second test with two new samples, and the third showed immediate and complete transfer when tested with a third pair of new stimuli. These results indicate a much stronger representation of the matching concept in monkeys than in pigeons, even when the conditions of assessment are reasonably comparable. In Experiment 2, however, 4 monkeys from Experiment 1 failed to transfer the matching rule to steady versus flashing green samples, indicating that the matching concept did not immediately extend beyond the general class of visual stimuli with which it was developed. These and related results in the literature suggest that representation of the matching concept in animals varies along a specificity-abstractness dimension, reflecting the degree to which the concept is tied to the conditions and context of its development. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to re-examine cerebral areas subserving the updating function of the central executive with a running span task requiring subjects to watch strings of consonants of unknown length and then to recall serially a specific number of recent items. In order to dissociate more precisely the updating process from the storage function, a four-item instead of a six-item memory load was used, contrary to our previous study (Salmon et al., 1996). In addition, a serial recall procedure was preferred to a recognition procedure in order to suppress the use of visuospatial strategies. The most significant increase of rCBF occurred in the left frontopolar cortex (Brodmann's area 10), spreading to the left middle frontal (Brodmann's area 46). A picture fragment test was used to compare the priming and cued recall performances of patients with Huntington's disease (HD), patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), and neurologically intact normal control (NC) subjects. On the pictorial priming test, subjects were asked to say "the first thing you think of" when shown incompletely drawn pictures, half of which were previously exposed to the subject during an unrelated naming task. Normal controls and HD patients, but not DAT patients, demonstrated similar increases in their ability to identify fragmented versions of previously seen pictures relative to novel pictures. These results are consistent with the previously observed pattern of preserved and impaired verbal priming ability in HD and DAT patients, respectively. The NC subjects, as expected, also demonstrated better performance on the cued recall than on the priming version of the picture fragment test, whereas the HD patients evidenced the opposite relationship on these two tasks and DAT patients were found to be equally impaired on both tests. This finding provides further support for the notion that HD patients' memory impairment is characterized primarily by an inability to initiate systematic retrieval strategies. 相似文献

Numerous grounds have been offered for the view that healthcare workers have a duty to treat, including expressed consent, implied consent, special training, reciprocity (also called the social contract view), and professional oaths and codes. Quite often, however, these grounds are simply asserted without being adequately defended or without the defenses being critically evaluated. This essay aims to help remedy that problem by providing a critical examination of the strengths and weaknesses of each of these five grounds for asserting that healthcare workers have a duty to treat, especially as that duty would arise in the context of an infectious disease pandemic. Ultimately, it argues that none of the defenses is currently sufficient to ground the kind of duty that would be needed in a pandemic. A wealth of evidence demonstrates that a prodromal period of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) exists for some years prior to the appearance
of significant cognitive and functional declines required for the clinical diagnosis. This prodromal period of decline is
characterized by a number of different neuropsychological and brain changes, and reliable identification of individuals prior
to the development of significant clinical symptoms remains a top priority of research. In this review we provide an overview
of those neuropsychological changes. In particular, we examine specific domains of cognition that appear to be negatively
affected during the prodromal period of AD, and we review newer analytic strategies designed to examine cognitive asymmetries
or discrepancies between higher-order cognitive functions versus fundamental skills. Finally, we provide a critical examination
of the clinical concept of Mild Cognitive Impairment and offer suggestions for an increased focus on the impact of cerebrovascular

We investigated the influence of preparation provided by parents on preschoolers' recall. One day before children participated in a staged novel event, parents discussed the event with their child either with (verbal+photos) or without (verbal) photographs. Parents and children in a control condition read an unrelated story. Then 8-10 days later the children were interviewed about the event. Children in the verbal+photos condition recalled significantly more than those in the control condition. Parental preparation style (e.g., evaluations, hypothetical language) was associated with the child's contributions to the preparatory discussion, but no aspect of parent or child style or content was associated with children's verbal recall. Similarly, there were no significant associations between children's performance on a task of episodic future thinking, and their preparatory discussion or recall, although episodic future thinking was strongly associated with language ability. The potential underlying mechanisms and theoretical implications are discussed. 相似文献
