THE LANGUAGE OF <Emphasis Type="Italic">YES</Emphasis> IN A WORLD OF <Emphasis Type="Italic">NO</Emphasis>: A GAY MAN REDISCOVERS HIS SILENCED SELF

Developmental issues arising from the dilemma of the protogay male child (as defined by Blum and Pfetzing in 1997) and the assaults to his sense of self are discussed in the context of the impact of the analytic attitude. Clinical material is offered as a 50-year-old gay man, troubled by his inability to form a lasting loving relationship with a man, experiences integration in the analytic relationship, stemming from what he describes as the “Yes” offered by his female analyst.     

The Adaptation of Patients During the Hospitalization Period of Bone Marrow Transplantation

A longitudinally study was conducted among 42 bone marrow transplantation (BMT) patients to investigate the association between pretransplant psychosocial variables and psychophysiological outcomes during the immediate convalescence period. Family relationships (cohesion, expressiveness, and conflict) and coping resources (cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual/philosophical, and physical resources) were assessed on the admission day (Day –7 Time 1). Data on psychological distress and pain intensity were obtained on Day +7 (Time 2) and Day +14 (Time 3). The average scores at Times 2 and 3 were computed to indicate the overall adjustments of the patients during the hospitalization period after the day of actual transplant (Day 0). It was shown that higher expressiveness family relationships and higher resources to cope effectively with stressful situations were associated with less psychological distress during the above period. Both pretransplant psychosocial variables were not associated with pain intensity during hospitalization. Allogeneic transplant patients reported higher pain intensity than did autologous transplant patients. Psychological distress and pain intensity were positively correlated with each other. Our findings show that pretransplant family relationships and coping resources associate moderately with psychological distress during the immediate convalescent period of BMT. The present findings support the family-centered approach to BMT care and provide a scientific basis for pretransplant psychosocial interventions.     

The Use of Self-Pleasure: Masturbation and Body Image among African American and European American Women

The current investigation examined the relationship between masturbation and body image among 96 women seeking services at a local family planning clinic in a mid-southern U.S. city. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed body image and masturbatory practices. Ethnic differences were found with European American women reporting greater masturbation frequencies and higher rates of body dissatisfaction than African American women. Among European American women, there was a positive relationship between women's sexual self-pleasuring and positive body image. For African American participants, body image was not related to masturbation practice or frequency.

A Content Analysis Technique for Evaluating Outcomes in Counseling

This study involved the content analysis of tape-recorded interviews in an attempt to validate criteria used for evaluating outcomes of counseling. A reputation (sociometric) inventory was used to select three types of students: socially effective, aggressive, and withdrawn. Each student was interviewed by a trained interviewer, and the content of interviews was analyzed according to topics discussed and affect associated with the topics. In general, socially effective students discussed a significantly greater number of topics than either the aggressive or withdrawn students. Few significant differences were found in positive- to negative-affect ratios but the socially effective did generally display more positive affect than the other groups. Though this study failed to validate this technique for appraising outcomes of counseling, the investigators believe that it has promise sufficient for further research.     

Exploring the Public Understanding of Basic Genetic Concepts

It is predicted that the rapid acquisition of new genetic knowledge and related applications during the next decade will have significant implications for virtually all members of society. Currently, most people get exposed to information about genes and genetics only through stories publicized in the media. We sought to understand how individuals in the general population used and understood the concepts of “genetics” and “genes.” During in-depth one-on-one telephone interviews with adults in the United States, we asked questions exploring their basic understanding of these terms, as well as their belief as to the location of genes in the human body. A wide range of responses was received. Despite conversational familiarity with genetic terminology, many noted frustration or were hesitant when trying to answer these questions. In addition, some responses reflected a lack of understanding about basic genetic science that may have significant implications for broader public education measures in genetic literacy, genetic counseling, public health practices, and even routine health care.
