Using the analogical transfer paradigm, the present study investigated the competing explanations of Girotto and Legrenzi (Psychological Research 51: 129–135, 1993) and Griggs, Platt, Newstead, and Jackson (Thinking and Reasoning 4: 1–14, 1998) for facilitation on the SARS version of the THOG problem, a hypothetico-deductive reasoning task. Girotto and Legrenzi argue that facilitation is based on logical analysis of the task [System 2 reasoning in Evans’s (Trends in Cognitive Sciences 7: 454–459, 2003) dual-process account of reasoning] while Griggs et al. maintain that facilitation is due to an attentional heuristic produced by the wording of the problem (System 1 reasoning). If Girotto and Legrenzi are correct, then System 2 reasoning, which is volitional and responsible for deductive reasoning, should be elicited, and participants should comprehend the solution principle of the THOG task and exhibit analogical transfer. However, if Griggs et al. are correct, then System 1 reasoning, which is responsible for heuristic problem solving strategies such as an attentional heuristic, should occur, and participants should not abstract the solution principle and transfer should not occur. Significant facilitation (68 and 82% correct) was only observed for the two SARS source problems, but significant analogical transfer did not occur. This lack of transfer suggests that System 1 reasoning was responsible for the facilitation observed in the SARS problem, supporting Griggs et al.’s attentional heuristic explanation. The present results also underscore the explanatory value of using analogical transfer rather than facilitation as the criterion for problem understanding.  相似文献

In previous work done in our laboratory, we have investigated the perceived pitch class of isolated musical triads. We have found that as the amount of musical training increased, listeners perceptions progress, from very confused percepts of pitch class, to analytic percepts corresponding to the pitch class of the highest note in the triad, and finally to synthetic percepts corresponding to the root note for the more harmonic triad types. In the present work, we used a pitch matching technique to determine the actual pitch, rather than merely the pitch class, perceived when listeners analytically "hear out" a particular note in a major triad. There was a strong tendency for the pitch of the analytically perceived note to be displaced by as much as 60 cents in the direction of the other notes in the triad. The magnitude of this effect decreased as musical training increased, and it was also affected by the relative salience of the individual triad notes. These results have implications for the mechanism of triad perception, and for claims regarding the harmonic equivalence of triad inversions.  相似文献

A large campaign has sought to destigmatize psychiatric disorders by disseminating the view that they are in fact brain disorders. But when psychiatric disorders are associated with neurobiological correlates, laypeople's attitudes toward patients are harsher, and the prognoses seem poorer. Here, we ask whether these misconceptions could result from the essentialist presumption that brain disorders are innate. To this end, we invited laypeople to reason about psychiatric disorders that are diagnosed by either a brain or a behavioral test that were strictly matched for their informative value. Participants viewed disorders as more likely to be innate and immutable when the diagnosis was supported by a brain test as compared to a behavioral test. These results show for the first time that people spontaneously essentialize psychiatric conditions that are linked to the brain, even when the brain probe offers no additional diagnostic or genetic information. This bias suggests that people consider the biological essence of living things as materially embodied.  相似文献

Hungry rats received food following lever-press durations exceeding a minimum value, which ranged from 0 to 6.4 sec. When no intertrial intervals separated successive presses, modal press durations remained at very short values as the minimum value required for food was increased. This was particularly true immediately after a food presentation. When an 8-sec intertrial interval followed each lever release, modal press durations were always at or beyond the minimum value required for food, and outcome of the preceding press had no effect on press duration. Possible reasons for the effects of intertrial intervals included punishment of short presses, increased delay of reinforcement of short presses, and reduced density of reinforcement. In addition, functions relating discrete-trials lever-press duration to minimum duration required for food were found to be qualitatively and quantitatively similar to the power functions recently proposed by Catania (1970) for interresponse time and response latency. This similarity was taken as support for a general psychophysical law of temporal judgments.  相似文献

This is a study of the offense type of aggression in males of the DBA/1Bg and C57BL/10Bg inbred strains of mice and their two reciprocal F1 hybrids. It uses three test paradigms for dyadic encounters: the homogeneous set test, an identity panel of testers, and the standard opponent test. There were no reciprocal F1 hybrid differences for any of the 12 behavioral measures of aggression in the homogeneous set test or the standard opponent test. For the panel of testers paradigm, reciprocal F1 hybrid differences occurred when the tester (opponent) was an F1 hybrid male, but not when the tester (opponent) was an RB/1 or C57BL10 male. When B10RB1F1 males were the testers (opponents), B10RB1F1 hybrid males were more aggressive than RB1B10F1 hybrid males across 10 of the 12 behavioral measures. Conversely, when RB1B10F1 males were the testers (opponents), RB1B10F1 males were more aggressive than B10RB1F1 males across 9 of the 12 behavioral measures. These results conform to the following empirical rule: A significant difference between reciprocal F1 hybrids is observed for these behavioral measures when one of the hybrids has both of its heterosomes (X and Y chromosomes) and its maternal environment identical to those of its opponent and the other hybrid has none of these identical to those of its opponent. These results are consistent with a model in which on some genetic backgrounds, but not on others, similarity of the heterosomes and maternal environments can influence the display of or response to social or other stimuli for the offense type of aggression in mice. These stimuli may be individual recognition chemosignals in urine.  相似文献

A technique is described for recording binary stimulus and response events on computer-compatible media mich as punched-paper tape and incremental magnetic tape. A specific implementation of the technique is presented along with a consideration of programming a computer to recover the recorded data.
