Studies of autobiographical memory have shown that observed levels of incidental learning are often relatively low. Do low levels of retention result simply from a low learning rate, or is learning also asymptotic? To address this question, it is necessary to trace performance over a large number of learning opportunities, and this was carried out in the context of the recent development of widespread texting behaviour. It was found that memory for the alphanumeric layout of a phone improved as a function of sending approximately the first 500 texts, but then the improvement stopped. The incidence of memory error was incompatible with a simple power-law relation but was modelled closely by an asymptotic relation. It is suggested that this pattern reflects a movement towards automaticity in the primary task which progressively closes down the possibility that incidental learning can occur. 相似文献

Booth and Waxman (Cognition 84 (2002) B11) have recently shown that linguistic cues to animacy affect children's novel name extensions. They argue that this demonstration contradicts two central tenets of our attentional learning account of object naming, which Booth and Waxman characterize as the "dumb attentional mechanism" or "DAM" account. In the present article, we show that the first of these tenets has never been a feature of the attentional learning account, and that the second tenet, which is central to our account, is not addressed by Booth and Waxman's findings. We suggest that the debate about the nature of children's language and cognition would profit from an increased awareness of the different levels of analysis at which different researchers are working. 相似文献

Twenty aspects of personality assessed via the California Psychological Inventory (CPI; Gough & Bradley, 1996) from age 33 to 75 were examined in a sample of 279 individuals. Oakland Growth Study and Berkeley Guidance Study members completed the CPI a maximum of 4 times. We used longitudinal hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to ask the following: Which personality characteristics change and which do not? Five CPI scales showed uniform lack of change, 2 showed heterogeneous change giving an averaged lack of change, 4 showed linear increases with age, 2 showed linear decreases with age, 4 showed gender or sample differences in linear change, 1 showed a quadratic peak, and 2 showed a quadratic nadir. The utility of HLM becomes apparent in portraying the complexity of personality change and stability. 相似文献

This article considers some of the implications of the critical standpoint in 'general' psychology in view of Jungian assumptions about the development of the self. The first part introduces the critical standpoint, which encompasses a spectrum of postmodern psychologies sharing a critique of the discipline's 'mainstream' positivist approach, an interest in human lives as existing in culture and historical time, and sensitivity to the dialogical unfolding of the self. Social constructionism and specifically the theory of positioning, which posits the self as a discursive production, are described. The second part illustrates the contrast between the social constructionist and Jungian viewpoints with two possible interpretations of a four-year-old boy's fantasies. Although these viewpoints are diametrically opposed, the possibility of a conceptual 'middle ground' between them is indicated here with particular reference to Bakhtin's understanding of the dialogical act. 相似文献

Gender and sexual orientation differences in sexual response to sexual activities versus gender of actors in sexual films 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, the authors investigated the hypothesis that women's sexual orientation and sexual responses in the laboratory correlate less highly than do men's because women respond primarily to the sexual activities performed by actors, whereas men respond primarily to the gender of the actors. The participants were 20 homosexual women, 27 heterosexual women, 17 homosexual men, and 27 heterosexual men. The videotaped stimuli included men and women engaging in same-sex intercourse, solitary masturbation, or nude exercise (no sexual activity); human male-female copulation; and animal (bonobo chimpanzee or Pan paniscus) copulation. Genital and subjective sexual arousal were continuously recorded. The genital responses of both sexes were weakest to nude exercise and strongest to intercourse. As predicted, however, actor gender was more important for men than for women, and the level of sexual activity was more important for women than for men. Consistent with this result, women responded genitally to bonobo copulation, whereas men did not. An unexpected result was that homosexual women responded more to nude female targets exercising and masturbating than to nude male targets, whereas heterosexual women responded about the same to both sexes at each activity level. 相似文献

Many individuals receiving genetic counseling are healthy with no need for clinical cancer services. We have recently relocated
our cancer genetic clinic to a small house on the outskirts of a hospital site which incorporates many elements proven to
be important in creating a “well-being” environment. This study explored participants’ perceptions of such an environment.
Eleven semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with women who had attended the new cancer genetic clinic. All
were at high risk of familial cancer, five were gene carriers and three had a personal diagnosis of cancer. The new clinic
was perceived to be less medical and more relaxing than other clinics, encouraged other family members to attend in support
of the attendee and did not appear to impede information comprehension. The importance of not being made to feel like an ill
patient was apparent. A desire for a quiet area allowing time for reflection whilst waiting for, and following, counseling
was identified. A poorly designed counseling area could reduce the quality of the interaction between patient and counselor.
Consideration of specific environmental design features may promote individuals’ well-being and make those attending genetic
counseling feel less like “patients.” Larger studies should seek to explore further the potential associations between factors
such as environmental design, psychological well-being and comprehension of risk information. 相似文献

The current study examined the link between immune functioning (CD4 count) and physical symptoms, as well as the moderating
role of optimism and depressive symptoms, in a sample of 99 low income, inner city African American women with HIV. Although
there was no main effect of CD4 count on physical symptoms, depressive symptoms moderated the association between CD4 count
and physical symptoms. More compromised immune functioning (lower CD4 count) was associated with more physical symptoms under
conditions of higher levels of depressive symptoms, but not lower levels of depressive symptoms. This finding was observed
using both a self-report measure and a clinician-rating of women’s depressive symptoms. There were no main or interactive
effects for optimism. Clinical implications and future research directions are presented. 相似文献

The present study employed a mixed method approach in the effort to explore religious and spiritual practices among lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, as well as the meanings ascribed to the terms religiosity and spirituality
by LGBT adults. Data were collected via a cross-sectional survey consisting of open- and close-ended items among 498 LGBT
(lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) identified individuals attending an annual Pride event in a large northeastern city.
Both quantitative and qualitative findings suggested that consistent with other studies, spirituality was defined largely
in relational terms (e.g., in terms of one’s relationship with God and with self). Religion, in contrast, was defined largely
in terms of communal worship and in terms of its negative influences in the lives of individuals and communities. For this
sample of LGBT persons, spiritual identities were more pronounced than religious ones, and this pattern may be explained by
their understanding of the spiritual self in relation to prosocial engagement and interconnectedness with others, the world
around them, and the universe. Further, religious affiliation and practices were explained, in part, by the religion in which
the individual was raised, level of educational attainment, as well as the developmental stage in which the person is currently
situated. The findings highlight the reality that a substantial number of LGBT individuals may remain committed to religious
and spiritual life, which may be related to a motivation to make sense of one’s place in the world especially in light of
societal misunderstandings and intolerance to LGBT individuals. 相似文献

Studies show teachers play an influential role in the career decision-making process of students and early knowledge of genetic
counseling (GC) increases the likelihood students will consider this career option. This quantitative study is the first to
explore the presentation of GC and other health care career options by high school (HS) biology/life science (B/LS) teachers
in their classrooms. Our findings indicate most B/LS teachers present GC as a career option to HS students, agree it complements
classroom activities, and perceive students as interested in learning about the profession. However, teachers note many barriers
to spending class time presenting GC careers. Consequently, a substantial number of teachers spent a minimal amount of time
presenting health care careers in general. We discuss ways genetic counselors can enhance career resources, reduce barriers,
and foster student interest in pursuing a career in GC by developing partnerships with HS B/LS teachers. 相似文献
