Research has debated whether children reflect on artists’ intentions when comprehending pictures, or instead derive meaning entirely from resemblance. We explore these hypotheses by comparing how typically developing toddlers and low-functioning children with autism (a population impaired in intentional reasoning) interpret abstract pictures. In Experiment 1, both groups mapped familiar object names onto abstract pictures, however, they related the same representations to different 3-D referents. Toddlers linked abstract pictures with intended referents they did not resemble, while children with autism mapped picture-referent relations based on resemblance. Experiment 2 showed that toddlers do not rely upon linguistic cues to determine intended referential relations. Experiment 3 confirmed that the responding of children with autism was not due to perseveration or associative word learning, and also provided independent evidence of their intention-reading difficulties. We argue that typically developing children derive meaning from the social-communicative intentions underlying pictures when resemblance is an inadequate cue to meaning. By contrast, children with autism do not reflect on artists’ intentions and simply relate pictures to whatever they happen to resemble. 相似文献

Does perceptual grouping operate early or late in visual processing? One position is that the elements in perceptual layouts are grouped early in vision, by properties of the retinal image, before perceptual constancies have been determined. A second position is that perceptual grouping operates on a postconstancy representation, one that is available only after stereoscopic depth perception, lightness constancy, and amodal completion have occurred. The present experiments indicate that grouping can operate on both a preconstancy representation and a postconstancy representation. Perceptual grouping was based on retinal color similarity at short exposure durations and based on surface color similarity at long durations. These results permit an integration of the preconstancy and postconstancy positions with regard to grouping by color. 相似文献

Medically oriented psychotherapists typically record progress notes by articulating client symptoms, diagnoses, functional
status, progress, and adherence to treatment plans. This orientation can challenge marriage and family therapists working
from discursive or post-modern perspectives. Although there are discursive therapy friendly treatment planning guides, no
published research on such practice exists. To address this gap the researchers conducted a recursive frame qualitative analysis
of 206 de-identified progress notes from 30 completed cases seen by MFT master’s students learning discursive approaches to
therapy in a university-based training clinic. Researchers found students noted problem to solution-focused discourse tipping
or turning points in 20 cases with positive outcomes and no comparable shifts in 10 cases with negative or unclear outcomes. 相似文献

In an investigation of the exploration stage of single counselling sessions with 26 anxious female volunteer clients and 13 female doctoral student therapists, no overall association was found between client narrative processing modes and subsequent therapist verbal response modes. There was evidence in a third of the sample for an association between therapist response modes and subsequent client narrative modes, such that clients used more internal than external or reflexive narrative processing modes when therapists used open questions about feelings and reflections of feelings. Client and therapist helpfulness ratings did not differ for different therapist response modes or client narrative process modes. Hence, overall results suggested that all four therapist response modes (open questions about thoughts, open questions about feelings, restatements, reflections of feelings) are effective during the exploration stage. 相似文献

We conducted two separate, exploratory studies to evaluate the differences between the supervision of wraparound (in-home) and outpatient (office) child treatment interventions. Study one (n = 96) examined the structure and norms of supervision between groups as well as rates of general disclosure to direct supervisors. Study two (n = 116) specifically examined the frequency of child abuse and neglect encountered in each intervention setting, and the level of disclosure in supervision of these mandatory reporting events. Findings from the first study suggest that wraparound clinicians received significantly less individual supervision and colleague consultation than their office-based counterparts. Additionally, wraparound clinicians were significantly more likely to withhold information about client cases from their direct supervisors. In the second study, wraparound clinicians endorsed significant increases for observed child abuse, observed child neglect, and verbally reported child neglect compared to their office-based counterparts. In regards to mandatory reporting issues with children, wraparound clinicians were found to be significantly less likely to disclose issues pertaining to child neglect to their direct supervisors than office-based clinicians. Our studies show preliminary evidence for a needed increase of individual supervision in wraparound practice, in addition to a greater focus on clinician disclosures related to incidents of child abuse and neglect. 相似文献

The relationship between associated movements (AMs) and level of motor performance is not well understood. In this study we investigated whether children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), with (n = 10) and without (n = 10) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a control group (n = 10), differed in the severity of AMs. A total AM severity score was obtained for each child by rating their performance on AM tasks. Both groups with motor difficulties had significantly more severe AMs than the control group. A significant correlation was found between level of motor performance and total AM scores (r = -.62). Our results suggest that level of motor performance should be considered in future research attempting to understand individual differences in severity of AMs as a function of motor, learning, and behavioural disorders. 相似文献

In order to investigate the nature of the combination of varying levels of vocal and physical attractiveness on the perception
of hypothetical political candidates, 90 adults rated photographs of target politicians on scales for the dimensions of competency,
trustworthiness, qualification, and leadership ability. It was hypothesized and confirmed that the halo effect (higher ratings
for highly attractive targets) elicited by physical attractiveness is stronger and more robust than the halo effect elicited
by vocal attractiveness; however vocal attractiveness did impact the perception of the candidates by lowering the ratings
associated with candidates that were presented as highly attractive but possessing an unattractive voice.

The use of effective instructional strategies is clearly emphasized in current educational reform, especially in the area
of reading. The purposes of this study were to investigate the rates at which specific instructional practices (i.e., attention
signals, prior knowledge supports, previews, instructor modeling, student modeling, organizational prompts) were utilized
during literacy time in elementary schools, determine if there were relationships among the instructional variables, and explore
if teachers in Title I schools and teachers in non-Title I schools differed in their use of specific practices. Participants
included teachers and students from 35 classrooms who were each observed for 5 hours, resulting in a total of 175 observation
hours. The Setting Factors Assessment Tool (SFAT) was used to measure the antecedent instructional variables. Main results
included that teachers in non-Title I classrooms used significantly more prior knowledge references than teachers in Title
I schools; the effect size for this finding was large. Several correlations among the instructional variables were significant.
The article concludes with a discussion of the main findings, implications for future research and the limitations of this

Oral reading is a complex skill involving the interaction of orthographic, phonological, and semantic processes. Functional imaging studies with nonimpaired adult readers have identified a widely distributed network of frontal, inferior parietal, posterior temporal, and occipital brain regions involved in the task. However, while functional imaging can identify cortical regions engaged in the process under examination, it cannot identify those brain regions essential for the task. The current study aimed to identify those neuroanatomical regions critical for successful oral reading by examining the relationship between word and nonword oral reading deficits and areas of tissue dysfunction in acute stroke. We evaluated 91 patients with left hemisphere ischemic stroke with a test of oral word and nonword reading, and magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted and perfusion-weighted imaging, within 24-48 h of stroke onset. A voxel-wise statistical map showed that impairments in word and nonword reading were associated with a distributed network of brain regions, including the inferior and middle frontal gyri, the middle temporal gyrus, the supramarginal and angular gyri, and the middle occipital gyrus. In addition, lesions associated with word deficits were found to be distributed more frontally, while nonword deficits were associated with lesions distributed more posteriorly. 相似文献
