In visual search tasks participants search for a target among distractors in strictly controlled displays. We show that visual search principles observed in these tasks do not necessarily apply in more ecologically valid search conditions, using dynamic and complex displays. A multi-element asynchronous dynamic (MAD) visual search was developed in which the stimuli could either be moving, stationary, and/or changing in luminance. The set sizes were high and participants did not know the specific target template. Experiments 1 through 4 showed that, contrary to previous studies, search for moving items was less efficient than search for static items and targets were missed a high percentage of the time. However, error rates were reduced when participants knew the exact target template (Experiment 5) and the difference in search efficiency for moving and stationary targets disappeared when lower set sizes were used (Experiment 6). In all experiments there was no benefit to finding targets defined by a luminance change. The data show that visual search principles previously shown in the literature do not apply to these more complex and "realistically" driven displays.  相似文献

The current study adds to prior research by investigating specific (happiness, sadness, surprise, disgust, anger and fear) and general (corrugator and zygomatic muscle activity) facial reactions to violent and comedy films among individuals with varying levels of callous–unemotional (CU) traits and impulsive aggression (IA). Participants at differential risk of CU traits and IA were selected from a sample of 1225 young adults. In Experiment 1, participants (N?=?82) facial expressions were recorded while they watched violent and comedy films. Video footage of participants' facial expressions was analysed using FaceReader, a facial coding software that classifies facial reactions. Findings suggested that individuals with elevated CU traits showed reduced facial reactions of sadness and disgust to violent films, indicating low empathic concern in response to victims' distress. In contrast, impulsive aggressors produced specifically more angry facial expressions when viewing violent and comedy films. In Experiment 2 (N?=?86), facial reactions were measured by monitoring facial electromyography activity. FaceReader findings were verified by the reduced facial electromyography at the corrugator, but not the zygomatic, muscle in response to violent films shown by individuals high in CU traits. Additional analysis suggested that sympathy to victims explained the association between CU traits and reduced facial reactions to violent films.  相似文献

Functional neuroimaging studies of humans engaged in retrieval from episodic memory have revealed a surprisingly consistent pattern of retrieval-related activity in lateral posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Given the well-established role of lateral PPC in subserving goal-directed and reflexive attention, it has been hypothesized that PPC activation during retrieval reflects the recruitment of parietal attention mechanisms during remembering. Here, we evaluate this hypothesis by considering the anatomical overlap of retrieval and attention effects in lateral PPC. We begin by briefly reviewing the literature implicating dorsal PPC in goal-directed attention and ventral PPC in reflexive attention. We then discuss the pattern of dorsal and ventral PPC activation during episodic retrieval, and conclude with consideration of the degree of anatomical convergence across the two domains. This assessment revealed that predominantly divergent subregions of lateral PPC are engaged during acts of episodic retrieval and during goal-directed and reflexive attention, suggesting that PPC retrieval effects reflect functionally distinct mechanisms from these forms of attention. Although attention must play a role in aspects of retrieval, the data reviewed here suggest that further investigation into the relationship between processes of attention and memory, as well as alternative accounts of PPC contributions to retrieval, is warranted.Episodic memory—declarative memory for events—has long been known to depend on the medial temporal lobe and, to a lesser extent, the prefrontal cortex (Squire 1992; Shimamura 1995; Wheeler et al. 1995; Gabrieli 1998; Eichenbaum and Cohen 2001; Squire et al. 2004). Recently, an explosion of functional neuroimaging studies has revealed that episodic retrieval is also consistently associated with activity in lateral posterior parietal cortex (PPC), including in the intraparietal sulcus and inferior parietal lobule (Figs. 1, ,2;2; for detailed review, see Wagner et al. 2005; Cabeza 2008; Cabeza et al. 2008; Ciaramelli et al. 2008; Vilberg and Rugg 2008b; Olson and Berryhill 2009). For example, comparison of temporal recency judgments to novelty-based decisions elicited greater IPS activity (Dudukovic and Wagner 2007).At the neuropsychological level, human lesion evidence regarding the necessity of lateral PPC mechanisms for episodic retrieval is limited and mixed (Berryhill et al. 2007; Davidson et al. 2008; Haramati et al. 2008; Simons et al. 2008). By contrast, other neuropsychological data indicate that lateral PPC is unambiguously associated with another cognitive domain—attention (Posner et al. 1984; Mesulam 1999; Parton et al. 2004). This latter lesion literature is further complemented by rich functional neuroimaging evidence implicating dorsal and ventral PPC in goal-directed and reflexive attention, respectively (for review, see Corbetta and Shulman 2002; Corbetta et al. 2008).Drawing from the rich literature linking attention to lateral PPC, memory researchers have recently proposed that lateral PPC activity during episodic retrieval tasks reflects the engagement of attention mechanisms during remembering (Cabeza 2008; Cabeza et al. 2008; Ciaramelli et al. 2008; Olson and Berryhill 2009). Specifically, it has been hypothesized that: (1) Dorsal PPC activity during retrieval may reflect the recruitment of goal-directed attention in service of performing retrieval tasks and (2) ventral PPC engagement during retrieval may mark the reflexive capture of attention by mnemonic representations. While prior comprehensive reviews of the neuroimaging literature on parietal correlates of episodic retrieval have documented functional dissociations along the dorsal/ventral axis of lateral PPC, which qualitatively parallel those seen in the attention literature, evaluation of the hypothesis that PPC retrieval activity reflects attention mechanisms further requires an assessment of the degree to which attention and retrieval effects co-localize. Here we review lateral PPC correlates of both episodic retrieval and attention, with the goal of directly assessing to the degree of anatomic overlap.It should be noted from the outset that the aim of the present review is to evaluate the hypothesis that lateral PPC episodic retrieval effects can be explained in terms of goal-directed and reflexive attention mechanisms. As such, we a priori imposed three constraints that served to focus our treatment of these two substantial literatures. First, while both the dual-attention and memory retrieval literatures focus on effects on the lateral parietal surface, retrieval effects are predominantly left lateralized. Thus, we constrained our analysis of attention and retrieval findings to left lateral PPC.5 Second, because prior retrieval reviews focused theoretical discussion on dual-attention accounts, here we similarly constrained our treatment of the extensive attention literature to include only those effects relevant to dual-attention theory. Finally, because the preponderance of evidence offered in support of dual-attention theory''s proposed dorsal attention network derives from studies of visual attention, the present review of the dorsal network is also confined to visual attention. As such, the present review should not be viewed as a comprehensive review of the entire attention literature.We first survey the functional neuroimaging literature on parietal correlates of goal-directed and reflexive attention, and then discuss how these correlates converge and diverge with the patterns of lateral PPC activity present during episodic retrieval. We conclude by considering theoretical frameworks that focus on the role of attention in episodic retrieval, as well as nonattention-based accounts of PPC activity during retrieval, and we highlight open questions that await further investigation.  相似文献

In visual search, 30-40% of targets with a prevalence rate of 2% are missed, compared to 7% of targets with a prevalence rate of 50% (Wolfe, Horowitz, & Kenner, 2005). This "low-prevalence" (LP) effect is thought to occur as participants are making motor errors, changing their response criteria, and/or quitting their search too soon. We investigate whether colour and spatial cues, known to improve visual search when the target has a high prevalence (HP), benefit search when the target is rare. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that although knowledge of the target's colour reduces miss errors overall, it does not eliminate the LP effect as more targets were missed at LP than at HP. Furthermore, detection of a rare target is significantly impaired if it appears in an unexpected colour-more so than if the prevalence of the target is high (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 showed that, if a rare target is exogenously cued, target detection is improved but still impaired relative to high-prevalence conditions. Furthermore, if the cue is absent or invalid, the percentage of missed targets increases. Participants were given the option to correct motor errors in all three experiments, which reduced but did not eliminate the LP effect. The results suggest that although valid colour and spatial cues improve target detection, participants still miss more targets at LP than at HP. Furthermore, invalid cues at LP are very costly in terms of miss errors. We discuss our findings in relation to current theories and applications of LP search.  相似文献

The purpose was three-fold: (1) to investigate the effect of baseline, precompetition, and postcompetition stress on salivary cortisol levels in top-ranking Brazilian wrestlers (N = 17) participating in a national competition; (2) to estimate correlations among three stress measures (perceived stress, salivary cortisol, and physiological stress reaction); and (3) to compare cortisol concentrations between losers and winners. Salivary cortisol was collected at baseline, pre-, and postcompetition. Physiological stress reaction and perceived stress scores were measured just before warm-up for the competition. Analysis showed a significant main effect for testing time. Correlations among the stress measures were not significant. Analysis of covariance between the winners (n = 10) and the losers (n = 7) was also not significant. Salivary cortisol concentrations increased after the intense exercise of competition. The wrestlers did not perceive any physiological effects.  相似文献

Contextual cueing experiments show that, when displays are repeated, reaction times (RTs) to find a target decrease over time even when the observers are not aware of the repetition. Recent evidence suggests that this benefit in standard contextual cueing tasks is not likely to be due to an improvement in attentional guidance (Kunar, Flusberg, Horowitz & Wolfe, 2007). Nevertheless, we ask whether guidance can help participants find the target in a repeated display, if they are given sufficient time to encode the display. In Experiment 1 we increased the display complexity so that it took participants longer to find the target. Here we found a larger effect of guidance than in a condition with shorter RTs. Experiment 2 gave participants prior exposure to the display context. The data again showed that with more time participants could implement guidance to help find the target, provided that there was something in the search stimuli locations to guide attention to. The data suggest that although the benefit in a standard contextual cueing task is unlikely to be a result of guidance, guidance can play a role if it is given time to develop.  相似文献

Visual search for a conjunction target is facilitated when distractor sets are segmented over time: the preview benefit. Watson and Humphreys (1997) suggested that this benefit involved inhibition of old items (visual marking, VM). We investigated whether the preview benefit is sensitive to the configuration of the old distractors. Old distractors changed their location prior to the occurrence of the new items, while also either changing or maintaining their configuration. Configuration changes disrupted search. The results are consistent with object-based VM, which is sensitive to the configuration of old stimuli.  相似文献

Emotional information can influence various cognitive processes, such as attention, motivation, and memory. Differences in the processing of emotion have been observed in individuals with high levels of autism-like traits. The current study aimed to determine the influence of emotional prosody on word learning ability in neurotypical adults who varied in their levels of autism-like traits. Thirty-eight participants learned 30 nonsense words as names for 30 “alien” characters. Alien names were verbally presented with happy, fearful, or neutral prosody. For all participants, recall performance was significantly worse for words spoken with fearful prosody compared to neutral. Recall performance was also worse for words spoken with happy prosody compared to neutral, but only for those with lower levels of autism-like traits. The findings suggest that emotional prosody can interfere with word learning, and that people with fewer autism-like traits may be more susceptible to such interference due to a higher attention bias toward emotion.  相似文献

In contextual cuing (CC), reaction times for finding targets are faster in repeated displays than in displays that have never been seen before. This has been demonstrated using target-distractor configurations, global background colors, naturalistic scenes, and covariation of targets with distractors. The majority of CC studies have used displays in which the target is always present. This study investigated what happens when the target is sometimes absent. Experiment 1 showed that, although configural CC occurs in displays when the target is always present, there is no CC when the target is always absent. Experiment 2 showed that there is no CC when the same spatial layout can be both target present and target absent on different trials. The presence of distractors in locations that had contained targets on other trials appeared to interfere with CC, and even disrupted the expression of CC in previously learned contexts (Exps. 3-5). These results show that target-distractor associations are the important element in producing CC and that, consistent with a response selection account, changing the response type from an orientation task to a detection task removes the CC effect.  相似文献
