The finding that dietary restraint scales predict onset of bulimic pathology has been interpreted as suggesting that dieting causes this eating disturbance, despite the dearth of evidence that these scales are valid measures of dietary restriction. The authors conducted 4 studies that tested whether dietary restraint scales were inversely correlated with unobtrusively measured caloric intake. These studies, which varied in foods consumed, settings, and populations, indicated that common dietary restraint scales were largely uncorrelated with acute caloric intake. Results suggest that these scales are not valid measures of short-term dietary restriction and imply that it may be prudent to reinterpret findings from studies thai use these scales, including those that suggest dietary restraint is a risk factor for bulimic pathology. 相似文献

Recent research has shown that the noncontingent delivery of competing stimuli can effectively reduce rates of destructive behavior maintained by social-positive reinforcement, even when the contingency for destructive behavior remains intact. It may be useful, therefore, to have a systematic means for predicting which reinforcers do and do not compete successfully with the reinforcer that is maintaining destructive behavior. In the present study, we conducted a brief competing stimulus assessment in which noncontingent access to a variety of tangible stimuli (one toy per trial) was superimposed on a fixed-ratio 1 schedule of attention for destructive behavior for individuals whose behavior was found to be reinforced by attention during a functional analysis. Tangible stimuli that resulted in the lowest rates of destructive behavior and highest percentages of engagement during the competing stimulus assessment were subsequently used in a noncontingent tangible items plus extinction treatment package and were compared to noncontingent attention plus extinction and extinction alone. Results indicated that both treatments resulted in greater reductions in the target behavior than did extinction alone and suggested that the competing stimulus assessment may be helpful in predicting stimuli that can enhance the effects of extinction when noncontingent attention is unavailable. A considerable body of kinematic data supports the proposal that independent visuomotor channels are involved in the control of the transport and grip components of reach and grasp. These channels are seen as having separate perceptual inputs, outputs and internal processing and are thought by some to correspond to independent neuroanatomical pathways. The idea that different groups of muscles and biomechanical structures can be controlled independently is attractive, but this kinematically-inspired hypothesis fails to take into account the complexity of the dynamic relationships and their interactions within the neuromusculoskeletal system. Inertial, viscous, centrifugal, coriolis, gravitational and reflex cross couplings exist between efferent drives to muscles and resulting body movements. Rotation at even a single joint generates a complex set of dynamic reaction forces and requires coordinated activation of many muscles throughout the body to maintain posture and balance. In this theoretical paper we present a new view of independent visuomotor channels in the form of an adaptive neural controller that can compensate for the above interactions and decouple the relationships between efferent drives to muscles and resulting body movements. At the same time, the neural controller renders all the dynamics (linear and nonlinear), other than time delays, of the neuromusculoskeletal system, unobservable in the visuomotor relationships. Using the geometry of nonlinear dynamical systems we show that, providing certain constraints on the structure of time delays within the system are satisfied, there exists a neural controller that can render all the dynamics of the neuromusculoskeletal system (except for time delays) unobservable in the responses. The controller simultaneously decouples all the interactive dynamics so that each of the m independent inputs controls one and only one degree of freedom of the response. This means that each degree of freedom in a multi-joint response can be controlled by an independent component of the visual input, a behaviour that has long been observed in visual tracking experiments. The controller effectively establishes m independent visuomotor channels. However, rather than reflecting separate neuroanatomical pathways, the independent channels result from a neural controller with convergent and divergent connections to compensate for the interactive nonlinear dynamics within the neuromusculoskeletal system. This new view of visuomotor channels has implications for neural control processes involved in the acquisition and adaptability of skilled perceptual-motor behaviour in general, as well as for the design of robotic controllers. 相似文献

We evaluated the effects of systematic application and removal of protective equipment on three topographies of self-injurious behavior (SIB) exhibited by a girl who had been diagnosed with autism. Results showed that when protective equipment was applied, SIB decreased to near-zero levels. In addition, withdrawal of protective equipment for specific topographies of SIB (by removing only the corresponding padding) increased rates of SIB only for that topography of SIB. Next, a functional analysis of hand SIB showed that protective equipment suppressed this behavior in all conditions and that the behavior was maintained by automatic reinforcement when padding was removed. The authors present a similarity-based model of induction and categorization in young children (SINC). The model suggests that (a). linguistic labels contribute to the perceived similarity of compared entities and (b). categorization and induction are a function of similarity computed over perceptual information and linguistic labels. The model also predicts young children's similarity judgment, induction, and categorization performance under different stimuli and task conditions. Predictions of the model were tested and confirmed in 6 experiments, in which 4- to 5-year-olds performed similarity judgment, induction, and categorization tasks using artificial and real labels (Experiments 1-4) and recognition memory tasks (Experiments 5A and 5B). The attitudes of 111 ninth and eleventh graders and both of their biological parents were independently assessed for prejudice against people with HIV/ AIDS, homosexuals, Blacks, and fat people, as well as for male and female sex role stereotyping. This study corrected for two shortcomings in previous research: neglecting to assess both parents and assessing only a single domain of prejudice. We addressed the intergenerational transmission of prejudice and stereotyping using three competing models: same-sex, parent equivalent, and differential effects. Using multiple regressions in which parents' scores were entered separately, along with control variables, different maternal and paternal influences were detected. Mothers were the primary influence for prejudice regarding HIV/AIDS, fatness, and race, and fathers were the primary influence for male and female stereotyping and prejudice against homosexuals, supporting the differential effects model. We also established that prejudice and stereotyping in specific domains reflected a more general proclivity to be intolerant. In contrast to prejudice and stereotyping in specific domains, fathers and mothers about equally shaped the adolescents' intolerance, supporting the parent equivalent model. 相似文献

Although much social science research has been conducted within American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities, relatively little research has been conducted by or for those communities. We describe an approach that facilitates the active involvement of AIAN communities in the research process, from conceptualizing the issues to be investigated to developing a research design, and from collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data to disseminating the results. The Tribal Participatory Research (TPR) approach is consistent with recent developments in psychology that emphasize the inclusion of community members and the social construction of knowledge. We describe the foundations of the approach and present specific mechanisms that can be employed in collaborations between researchers and AIAN communities. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of the use of TPR regarding project timelines and budgets, interpretation of the data, and ultimately the relationships between tribes and researchers. 相似文献
