The stated goal of protecting White women from harm has been used, historically and contemporarily, as a pretext for racial violence. Two studies explored the relationship between protective paternalism (the belief that men should protect and care for women—part of benevolent sexism; Glick and Fiske 1996) and anti-minority racial attitudes. In Study 1 (n = 474, 61% women, 61% White), survey data found that protective paternalism was related to anti-Black bias, but only for White respondents. Study 2 (n = 242, 52% women, 74% White) experimentally manipulated feelings of threat to test for increases in protective paternalism and its corresponding effect on three anti-minority racial attitudes. For male participants only, threat (i.e., reading about recent increases in violent crime) increased endorsement of protective paternalism, which was in turn associated with a more negative view of immigration, and, for White men only, less support for policies that benefit racial minority groups and greater denial of racial bias in policing. Threat did not increase protective paternalism in female participants. For White men in particular, news of crime and danger increases racial bias by first increasing the desire to protect women. Policymakers should be aware that framing policies around safety concerns or appealing to the protection of women might unintentionally bolster anti-minority racial prejudices. 相似文献

Antisocial behavior and substance misuse are forms of problem behavior demonstrating considerable continuity over time. Accordingly,
problem behavior influences interpersonal contexts across the life course, which may result in the replication of coercive
interactions and a problem behavior lifestyle within romantic relationships. Furthermore, theories of self-selection, and
associated research, suggest that individuals pick companions compatible with, and supportive of, their behavior, leading
to high levels of similarity between romantic partners and the potential reinforcement of problem behavior over time. However,
some research suggests that romantic relationships may play a positive role and facilitate desistance from problem behavior.
The purpose of this paper is to explore how antisocial behavior and substance use both influence and are influenced by romantic
relationships in late adolescence and early adulthood. We first review research regarding the extent of, and processes underlying,
partner similarity in problem behavior. Next, we examine how romantic relationships may promote the desistance of problem
behavior. Finally, we discuss possible moderators of the association between problem behavior and romantic relationships,
as well as limitations, intergenerational implications, and recommended future directions of the reviewed research. 相似文献

Analogue behavioral observation of structured parent-child interactions has often been used to obtain a standardized, unbiased measure of child noncompliance and parenting behavior. However, for assessment information to be clinically relevant, it is essential that the behavior observed be similar to that which the child normally experiences and elicits. Furthermore, assessment procedures should be socially appropriate and acceptable to participants in order to facilitate investment in the assessment, and potentially treatment, process. Although analogue tasks have been shown to have reasonable psychometric properties, the social validity of these methods has not been evaluated. This study examined the acceptability and representativeness of 4 widely utilized, laboratory-based parent-child interaction tasks in a sample of 43 nonreferred, 3- to 6-year old children and their mothers, who were of European-American or African-American ethnicity. Mothers rated the acceptability of each task and the degree to which it was representative of “typical” interactions occurring with the child. Repeated-measures analyses of variance revealed high levels of acceptability and representativeness for all tasks, but consistent differences across tasks. These ratings were predominantly stable over a 2-week period. Additionally, social validity ratings were significantly associated with parenting self-esteem, maternal ethnicity, child gender, and child age, but not child behavior problems. Limitations and implications of these findings for the assessment of parent-child interaction are discussed. 相似文献

This paper comprehensively reviews the published literature investigating health-related quality of life (HRQOL) following general traumatic injury in individuals between birth and 18?years. Studies were not considered if they primarily compared medical treatment options, evaluated physical function but not other aspects of HRQOL, or focused on non-traumatic wounds. Specific injury types (e.g., burn injury) were also not included. A total of 16 studies met criteria. Participants were age 1-18?years, with 12 studies considering children 5?years of age or older. Males were overrepresented. Injury severity averaged mostly in the moderate range. HRQOL deficits were noted in injured samples in all studies except the two with the longest time to follow-up (6-11?years). Some improvement was seen 6?months to 2?years after injury. Factors associated with HRQOL deficits were investigated, with acute and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms showing the strongest relationship. Research to date in this area is impressive, particularly the number of studies using prospective longitudinal investigations and validated measures. Challenges remain regarding methodologic differences, assessment of preinjury status, retention of participants, and management of missing data. Suggested future directions include extension of follow-up duration, utilization of pediatric self-report when possible, inclusion of younger children, and development of intervention programs. 相似文献

We use longitudinal multilevel modeling to test how exposure to community violence and cognitive and behavioral factors contribute to the development of aggressive and prosocial behaviors. Specifically, we examine predictors of self-, peer-, and teacher-reported aggressive and prosocial behavior among 266 urban, African American early adolescents. We examine lagged, within-person, between-person, and protective effects across 2 years. In general, results suggest that higher levels of violence exposure and aggressive beliefs are associated with more aggressive and less prosocial peer-reported behavior, whereas greater self-efficacy to resolve conflict peacefully is associated with less aggression across reporters and more teacher-reported prosocial behavior. Greater knowledge and violence prevention skills are associated with fewer aggressive and more prosocial teacher-reported behaviors. Results also suggest that greater self-efficacy and lower impulsivity have protective effects for youth reporting higher levels of exposure to community violence, in terms of teacher-reported aggressive behavior and peer-reported prosocial behavior. Differences among reporters and models are discussed, as well as implications for intervention. 相似文献
