Cardiac cycle time has been shown to affect pre-attentive brainstem startle processes, such as the magnitude of acoustically evoked reflexive startle eye blinks. These effects were attributed to baro-afferent feedback mechanisms. However, it remains unclear whether cardiac cycle time plays a role in higher startle-related cognitive processes, as well. Twenty-five volunteers responded first by ’fast as possible’ button pushes (reaction time, RT), and second, rated perceived intensity of 60 acoustic startle stimuli (85, 95, or 105 dB; 50 ms duration; binaural; instantaneous rise time), which were presented either 230 or 530 ms after the R-wave, and eye blink responses were measured by EMG. RT was divided into evaluation and motor response time according to previous research. Increasing stimulus intensity enhanced startle eye blink, intensity ratings, and RT components. Eye blinks and intensity judgments were lower when startle was elicited at a latency of R + 230 ms, but RT components were differentially affected: the evaluative component was attenuated, and the motor component was accelerated when stimuli were presented 230 ms after the R-wave. We conclude that the cardiac cycle affects the attentive processing of acoustic startle stimuli.  相似文献

Experiences over five years interacting with patients as the clown Jingles and the experiment and experience of one afternoon as the clown Hairie in a hospital led the authors to reflect on the deeper meaning of clowns, their appearance during the centuries, their impact on people and relation to ministry. The presence of a clown changes the atmosphere and dynamics; clowns touch people in their deep feelings and may free them to laugh, to cry, or to play. This article provides an overview of the Perinatal Positive Parenting program (PPP). This primary prevention program, developed at the Institute for Family and Child Study at Michigan State University, was designed to meet the parenting support and informational needs of first-time parents. The basic tenets of the PPP program are discussed and overviews of the in-hospital, at home, and parents' support group functions are provided. The evaluations of the primary demonstration of PPP are presented and the PPP videotapes and other materials developed for use with program participants are outlined.  相似文献

In this paper I propose a view uniformly extending expected utility calculations to both individual and group choice contexts. By way of three related cases I discuss the problems inherent in applying expected utility to group choice cases. I show that the problem with such group cases does not essentially depend upon the fact that more than one agent is involved. A modified strategy is then devised allowing the application of the expected utility formula to these otherwise problematic cases. One case, however, leads to contradiction. But recognizing the falsity of the proposition.(1) If an agent x knows options A and B are both available, and x knows that were he to do A he would be better off (in every respect) than were he to do B, then doing A is more rational for x than doing B,allows the resolution of the contradiction and also allows my modified strategy to resolve otherwise paradoxical cases of group choice such as the Prisoners' Dilemma.This paper is dedicated to my parents, Arleen Eichengreen and Alvin Richter, for their encouragement, understanding, and financial support.
