Fifty-eight healthy subjects made rapid elbow extensions to a target over 54 degrees. Angular acceleration was measured and surface electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from the antagonistic muscles using monopolar rather than bipolar electrode configurations. Marked individual differences were found in the peak value of the first derivative of acceleration (dAcc/dt_Pk). The dAcc/dt_Pk correlated with both quantitative and qualitative properties of the agonist EMGs, but not with those of the antagonist EMG. The agonist EMGs, integrated until the moment of dAcc/dt_Pk, were positively correlated with dAcc/dt_Pk. The interval between EMG onset and EMG peak decreased with increasing dAcc/dt_Pk. The duration of the initial negative phase in the EMGs, which was considered to index the time required to recruit high-threshold MUs, decreased with increasing dAcc/dt_Pk. The results indicate that the ability to rapidly accelerate the lower arm varies across subjects, probably due in part to individual differences in the neural capacity to drive the agonists.  相似文献

We show that transient attention summoned by an exogenous cue shows rapid learning of the relationship between the cue and a subsequent target in a discrimination task. In experiment 1, performance was unaffected when a target always appeared in the same position on a large cue, but was degraded when the target could appear anywhere within the extent of the larger cue. Experiment 2 shows that it was not the predictability of where the target appeared within the cue that aided performance, but rather a consistent location mapping of cue and target, since predictably alternating the target location relative to the cue led to worse performance than when the target was presented in the same location relative to the cue from trial to trial. Further analysis of the results of experiment 2 shows that the learning is rapid, evident after one trial, and has a cumulative influence over four consecutive trials. Possible neural correlates of this form of learning are discussed, with a focus on the supplementary eye fields in the prefrontal cortex. The reported experiments show that transient attention is not a simple reflexive mechanism but can show rapid visuospatial learning, in object-based coordinates.  相似文献

In recent years there have been several reports on duality in vector optimization. However, there seems to be no unified approach to dualization. In a previous paper by the author a geometric consideration was given to duality in non-linear vector optimization. In this paper a relationship between duality, stability (normality) and condition of the alternative will be reported on the basis of some geometric consideration. The sensitivity of the visual system to motion of differentially moving random dots was measured. Two kinds of one-dimensional motion were compared: standing-wave patterns where dot movement amplitude varied as a sinusoidal function of position along the axis of dot movement (longitudinal or compressional waves) and patterns of motion where dot movement amplitude varied as a sinusoidal function orthogonal to the axis of motion (transverse or shearing waves). Spatial frequency, temporal frequency, and orientation of the motion were varied. The major finding was a much larger threshold rise for shear than for compression when motion spatial frequency increased beyond 1 cycle deg-1. Control experiments ruled out the extraneous cues of local luminance or local dot density. No conspicuous low spatial-frequency rise in thresholds for any type of differential motion was seen at the lowest spatial frequencies tested, and no difference was seen between horizontal and vertical motion. The results suggest that at the motion threshold spatial integration is greatest in a direction orthogonal to the direction of motion, a view consistent with elongated receptive fields most sensitive to motion orthogonal to their major axis.  相似文献
