Two parallel experiments used pigeons in a transfer of control design to determine the basis of the transfer of the use of the “advance strategy” across successive discriminations (W. K. Honig & H. Lindsay, Learning and Motivation, 1975, 6, 157–178). Pigeons were first trained under instrumental contingencies to use an “advance” response to maximize their exposure to SD and minimize their exposure to SΔ. Then orthogonal stimuli (key lights in Experiment 1 and diffuse illuminations in Experiment 2) were independently established through separate discriminative Pavlovian procedures as CS+ and CS? or as CSo's. Later in special tests, it was demonstrated that the associative values of the Pavlovian CS's were a major factor governing the use of the advance strategy: only pigeons exposed to CS+CS? used the advance response to regulate their exposure to either CS. Although these experiments showed that the necessary and sufficient conditions for utilization of the advance strategy are the Pavlovian associative values of the discriminative stimuli, opportunity for differential “operant” responding during the discriminative stimuli seems to be a contributor to the optimal use of the advance response across successive discriminations.  相似文献

Although there were no significant differences in the single support phase of gait for 6 trainable mentally retarded boys (Mean age 9.6 yr.) and 6 nonretarded boys (Mean age 9.5 yr.), total gait time and time in double support were significantly different for the two groups, supporting previous research which showed gait was was deficient in trainable mentally retarded individuals.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the feasibility of using lingual vibrotactile stimulation to elicit an averaged evoked response and to investigate the effects of two supra-threshold intensity levels of lingual vibrotactile stimulation on the electro-cortical activity of the brain. The evoked responses were analyzed according to the amplitude of N1-P2 (in microvolts). Analysis indicates that the tongue can successfully be used as a stimulus site in the elicitation of an evoked response. The amplitudes of the evoked response elicited by 2 micrometers sensation level and 5 micrometers sensation level on the tongue are essentially the same. The relative difference between these levels is not sufficient to produce significant differences in the amplitudes of their respective evoked responses.  相似文献

Electrographic (EEG, EOG, EMG) indices have been used for some decades in the definition of the stages of sleep and more recently in the diagnosis of sleep-related disorders, e.g., insomnia, despite the lack of detailed information concerning the precise relationship between such electrographic indices and behavioral and subjective criteria of sleep. Evaluation of the relationship between EEG, behavioral, and self-report measures of sleep onset latency and sleep duration was conducted using 17 young normal sleepers. The behavioral measure was provided by an apparatus which records subjects' button-press responses to an auditory stimulus presented at various interstimulus intervals (2, 5, and random 1, 2, 5, 7, and 10 min). The behavioral and stage 2 EEG estimates of sleep onset latency (SOL) and sleep duration (SD) were almost identical. The stage 1 EEG provided the shortest estimate of SOL; the self-report measure, the longest. The SD measures were in reverse order. There were no significant differences among the three interstimulus interval conditions (2, 5, and random min). Average response rates to the 50-dB chime were 100% during wakefulness, 81% during EEG stage 1, and 8% during EEG stage 2. Almost all stage 2 responding occurred during the first 5 min of each stage 2 period. The validity of electrographic indices as sleep criteria and the implications of the findings for the formulation of an adequate definition of sleep and its clinical measurement are discussed.  相似文献

The reported direction of autokinesis for naive observers is not biased by gaze deviations of 22.5 deg of arc. However, instructions to expect either “inward” or “outward” movement produce reports of autokinetic movement that are progressively biased in the expected direction. Instructions to expect “more” or “less” movement resulted in a decrease in the reported duration of apparent movement for the “less” group but no change for the “more” group. Response bias is not considered to play a role in these results. The results are discussed in terms of fixational bias and selective attention mechanisms of autokinesis.  相似文献

Judged distance in a large open field, scaled by the method of magnitude estimation, is related to physical distance by a power function with an exponent smaller than unity. The exponents obtained with two ranges of distance were not affected by the availability of a standard. The mean exponent for all 80 individual power functions was 0.86, with a standard deviation of 0.11.  相似文献
