When places are explored without vision, observers go from temporally sequenced, circuitous inputs available along walks to knowledge of spatial structure (i.e., straight-line distances and directions characterizing the simultaneous arrangement of the objects passed along the way). Studies show that a life history of vision helps develop nonvisual sensitivity, but they are unspecific on the formative experiences or the underlying processes. This study compared judgments of straight-line distances and directions among landmarks in a familiar area of town by partially sighted persons who varied in types and ages of visual impairment. Those with early childhood loss of broad-field vision and those blind from birth performed significantly worse than those with early or late acuity loss and those with late field loss. Broad-field visual experience facilitates perceptual development by providing a basis for proprioceptive and efferent information from locomotion against distances and directions relative to the surrounding environment. Differences in the perception of walking, in turn, cause the observed differences in sensitivity to spatial structure.  相似文献

In this article the authors report on the development and validation of a computer-based rehabilitation caseload management simulation as a teaching and evaluation tool in counselor education. The computer simulation was administered to 18 rehabilitation students and 18 rehabilitation counselors. Their performance on the simulation was evaluated using six caseload management performance indicators. These performance indicators, derived from the computer simulation, were found to be effective in differentiating the student group from the experienced counselor group using discriminant analysis. Implications for the use of computer simulations in rehabilitation counselor education and future research directions are discussed.  相似文献

This paper proposes a perspective for understanding the development of adolescent sexual intimacy. A "transitional stage" is described in which adolescents, driven by a variety of developmental needs influenced by external forces such as peers and family, experiment with sexual behaviors. The completion of the transitional stage results in the adolescent's ability to achieve "relational" sexual intimacy, which is also described. The problems and implications for counseling associated with the biophysiological and family dynamic influences on the development of adolescent sexual intimacy are discussed.  相似文献

Academic records were obtained for students from two towns in southwestern Ontario who attended their town's major public elementary school from first through eighth grade and then completed their secondary education in each town's only public high school between 1982 and 1986. The evidence showed that students who experienced the most difficulty in mastering the two main areas of the first-grade curriculum (reading and arithmetic) had a much higher probability of leaving high school without graduating and of experiencing serious academic problems while in high school than students who received B to A + marks in first grade.  相似文献

An analytical and feeling response regarding the question of Jung's anti-Semitism is presented. The author calls for a compassionate and understanding approach to Jung's lifelong development, based on an appreciation of Jung's religious attitude, which evolved toward a deep acceptance of Judaism and its traditions. Characteristic of analysts as healers is the maxim that individuals grow and change; such was certainly the case with Jung as can be seen clearly in his later sunset years. After all, will we remember Frederick de Klerk as a proponent of apartheid or as the Afrikaaner who shared the Nobel Prize for Peace with Nelson Mandela?  相似文献

Two experiments in which time was restored to artificially accelerated (time-compressed) speech are reported. Experiment 1 showed that although both young and older adults' recall of the speech benefited from the restoration of time, time restoration failed to boost the older adults to their baseline levels for unaltered speech. In Experiment 2, either 100% or 125% of lost time was restored by inserting pauses, either at linguistic boundaries or at random points within the passages. Experiment 2 showed that the beneficial effects of time restoration depended on where processing time was inserted, as well as how much time was restored. Results are interpreted in terms of age-related slowing in speech processing moderated by preserved linguistic knowledge and short-term conceptual memory.  相似文献

Jacobson has raised a number of issues about the usefulness of psychotherapy integration. Some of his concerns stem from his doubt that people are capable of change, and some that appear to be the result of a misinterpretation of what constitutes psychotherapy integration. This article attempts to clarify some of these misunderstandings, which seem to be the result of equating psychotherapy integration with the integration of theories. The shift of paradigm from psychodynamic therapy to behavior modification has changed the views of assessment and challenged traditional broad trait concepts. Behavioral assessment has used narrow, situation-specific trait tests, state self-report tests given in situations, and behavioral observations and performance ratings. Comparison of these types of measures are reported from a study of fear reactions in three situations. Narrow trait measures are generally more predictive of behavior than broad trait measures. State measures are even more predictive when given just before the performance. But only a sampling of such state measures can be used to define a trait because of the lower reliability of states. It is argued that behavior in situations is only predictable when an adequate number of behavioral samples is used.  相似文献
