The relative impacts on smoking behavior of restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST), behavioral self-management, and the combination were compared. Fifteen smokers from the community were treated in each of the three conditions and followed over a 12-month period. The combined treatment was very successful compared to standard smoking interventions (a mean of 66% reduction from baseline smoking rate and 53% of subjects completely abstinent on the 1-year follow-up), and subjects in this group smoked significantly less than those in either the REST or behavioral self-management only condition. Furthermore, subjects receiving REST, alone or in combination, were significantly less likely to relapse following treatment. The results were taken to support the importance of addressing multiple change objectives in smoking cessation programs. 相似文献

Despite a growing body of empirical and theoretical work on the role of the school counsellor, little evidence is available about the attitudes of teachers themselves towards their counsellor colleagues. This paper reports some results of a study of teacher attitudes in eight comprehensive schools. The findings suggest that teachers are significantly more supportive of school counsellors than is often suggested, and that this is particularly true of teachers in schools with counsellors in post. 相似文献

In previous studies using the Preschool Racial Attitude Measure (PRAM) and other measurement procedures, preschool children have displayed a tendency to evaluate light-skinned (Euro-American) persons more positively than dark-skinned (Afro-American) persons. Both Euro- and Afro-American children demonstrate this pro-Euro/anti-Afro () bias, though it is less pronounced among Afro children.Two experiments designed to modify this racial bias are reported. The first study involved 39 Euro- and Afro-American preschool children and employed operant learning principles to modify bias via a teaching machine procedure which provided reinforcement for pro-Afro/anti-Euro responses. Following training, the children showed a reduction in bias on a test procedure not associated with the training. Follow-up testing of 30 of the children approximately 1 yr after the posttest revealed a tendency for the pro-Euro bias to be partially reestablished. The second study involved 70 Euro-American kindergarten children and was concerned with the modification of bias via a classroom curriculum procedure and the possible influence of the race of the teacher associated with the curriculum. The experimental curriculum, designed to develop positive associations to dark-skinned persons and to the colors black and brown, was shown to have no effect on bias, nor was race of teacher a variable of significance. This investigation examines the extent to which a sample of 89 professional Jamaican men and women displays the traits of masculinity and femininity, measured by way of Bem's Sex-Role Inventory. The sample was drawn from the public and private sectors of society. Findings suggest that while, as expected, both sexes were classified mainly according to their appropriate sex-role traits, females in the private sector were much more “masculine” than their counterparts in the public sector. This was thought to reflect the pressure on private sector women to “prove themselves” as equals of men—a pressure which does not represent one of the criteria for promotion within the public sector. 相似文献

Holtzman rats drank saccharin in a distinctive environmental chamber prior to lithium-induced toxicosis. This treatment was administered four times. These animals subsequently drank less water or familiar saline in the chamber than animals which received water in the environment during conditioning. In addition, these environmental stimuli blocked the formation of a lithium-mediated coffee aversion more if they were conditioned in the presence of saccharin than if they were conditioned in the presence of water. Such differential blocking provided further evidence that the presence of a taste during conditioning facilitated aversion learning to the environmental chamber. 相似文献

Human volunteers learned taste aversions to a relatively novel cranberry flavor paired with apomorphine-induced illness. These aversions were significantly reduced by pretreatment familiarization to the flavor unless an unpalatable interfering flavor was introduced just prior to the administration of apomorphine. Despite many efforts to increase gender fairness in education in recent years, the issue has not yet become obsolete: Gender discrimination still exists and finds expression in unused chances and limited action repertoires for both sexes. This article gives an overview on existing gender differences across the lifespan before providing explanations for these differences from a developmental perspective. We present psychological theories of development dealing with the adoption of gender typical preferences and behaviors in children, and draw the connection to the role parents’ and teachers’ gender stereotypes play in this process. The mechanisms contributing to the perpetuation of gender differences are illustrated via empirical studies. Finally, we offer starting points for interventions to prevent the development of these gender differences, and introduce the REFLECT program which enhances gender competence in secondary school teachers and their students, and a training program for kindergarten teachers as concrete examples of such interventions. 相似文献

This study explores issues of access to high-status occupations in the Canadian labour market, with particular emphasis on
refugees who were in professional or managerial positions prior to their arrival in Canada. The study is based on interviews
with a sample of 525 adult refugees who were initially resettled in the province of Alberta between 1992 and 1997. About two
thirds of the respondents came from former Yugoslavia, the remainder from countries in the Middle East, Central America, Africa,
and Southeast Asia. Despite the generally high educational attainment of these refugees, the results show that they experience,
much higher rates of unemployment, part-time employment, and temporary employment than do Canadian-born individuals. A variety
of structural factors operating in a segmented Canadian labour market help to explain the downward mobility of these highly

Research on visual mental imagery has been fueled recently by the development of new behavioral and neuroscientific techniques. This review focuses on two major topics in light of these developments. The first concerns the extent to which visual mental imagery and visual perception share common psychological and neural mechanisms; although the research findings largely support convergence between these two processes, there are data that qualify the degree of overlap between them. The second issue involves the neural substrate mediating the process of imagery generation. The data suggest a slight left-hemisphere advantage for this process, although there is considerable variability across and within subjects. There also remain many unanswered questions in this field, including what the relationship is between imagery and working memory and what representational differences, if any, exist between imagery and perception. 相似文献
