The association of enumeration and number comparison capacities with arithmetical competence was examined in a large sample of children from 2nd to 9th grades. It was found that efficiency on numerical capacities predicted separately more than 25% of the variance in the individual differences on a timed arithmetical test, and this occurred for both younger and older learners. These capacities were also significant predictors of individual variations in an untimed curriculum-based math achievement test and on the teacher scores of math performance over developmental time. Based on these findings, these numerical capacities were used for estimating the prevalence and gender ratio of basic numerical deficits and developmental dyscalculia (DD) over the grade range defined above (N = 11,652 children). The extent to which DD affects the population with poor ability on calculation was also examined. For this purpose, the prevalence and gender ratio of arithmetical dysfluency (AD) were estimated in the same cohort. The estimated prevalence of DD was 3.4%, and the male:female ratio was 4:1. However, the prevalence of AD was almost 3 times as high (9.35%), and no gender differences were found (male:female ratio = 1.07:1). Basic numerical deficits affect 4.54% of school-age population and affect more boys than girls (2.4:1). The differences between the corresponding estimates were highly significant (α < .01). Based on these contrastive findings, it is concluded that DD, defined as a defective sense of numerosity, could be a distinctive disorder that affects only a portion of children with AD.  相似文献

Vladimir Lefebvre proposed an algebraic model of self-reflexion in the 1980s. He viewed reflexion as a product of the structure and computational rules of Gamma algebra and his equations are considered metaphors for how consciousness is structured. From the framework of this model, Lefebvre hypothesized an asymmetry in human cognition. One of the early studies supporting his model was conducted by Victorina Lefebvre. Over the years, other studies have been conducted, but not all have shown similar support as the original findings of Victorina Lefebvre. Domestic violence against women is a pervasive, global health problem. This study investigates the correlates and psychological outcomes of domestic abuse among women in a semi-industrial country. The participants included 215 mothers residing in working-class communities located on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile. We utilized structural equation modeling to test the hypothesis that poverty and other structural inequalities would be related to incidents of domestic abuse in Chile, as they are in the United States. Our results suggest that lower socioeconomic status, even within poor communities, and stressful life events have a direct relationship to domestic conflict. Domestic abuse was, in turn, associated with women's mental health such that greater domestic conflict was related to higher reports of depressive affect and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. The importance of identifying similarities and differences in the occurrence of domestic violence in developing countries as compared to industrialized countries is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of SDA emerging adults (N?=?558) to remain sexually abstinent prior to marriage in spite of pressures to engage in such act. The researchers explored whether gender and racial differences exist among this group. The results showed a significant difference between SDA emerging males and females regarding their levels of self-efficacy (t (df=372)?=?2.207; p?<?.05), and a significant difference among SDA emerging Caucasians, African Americans and other races as it relates to their levels of self-efficacy (F (df 2, 555)?=?6.602, p?<?.05). The researchers recommend that religious institutions focus on the factors that influence the levels of self-efficacy, rather than simply emphasizing a sexually-abstinent lifestyle.  相似文献

Abstract

Although the importance of integration of faith and learning (IFL) is well documented in the literature, little is known of how it is implemented at a Historically Black University. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how IFL is deliberately implemented at a faith-based Historically Black University. Twenty-nine faculty members participated in the study. Thematic analysis was used to identify the following themes: connectivity, modeling, intentionality and spontaneity. These themes not only describe how IFL occurs at this institution, but also the levels at which IFL is deliberately implemented.  相似文献
