The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a traditional weight control program and nondiet alternative in improving behavioral (e.g., restrained, emotional, and external eating), psychological (e.g., body preoccupation, physical self-esteem), and biomedical (e.g., body weight, blood pressure, cholesterol) outcomes. There were 2 intervention groups--traditional weight control (TWC) and Diet Free Forever (DFF); a nonvolunteer comparison group; and a control group, all made up of employees of 3M (N = 357). The 2 intervention groups participated in 10-week eating programs. Outcome variables were assessed at baseline, at 10 weeks for the intervention groups only, and again at 1 year. At baseline, the 2 intervention groups had higher restrained, external, and emotional eating scores, greater body preoccupation, and lower physical self-esteem than the comparison and control groups. They also weighed more. At 1 year, both intervention groups had decreased their body preoccupation and increased their physical self-esteem. Participants in the DFF program reduced their restrained eating, whereas those in the TWC program increased their restrained eating. Neither eating program had an impact on the biomedical outcomes.  相似文献

Children must be taught how to act, and it is easy to assume that such teaching requires the use of rewards and punishments. Yet research shows that rewards and punishments are likely to have unintended and, often, undesirable consequences. The paper discusses some of this research and casts the results into a context that integrates language learning, value transmission, and behavior. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the speech of “successfully therapeutized” stutterers and a group of partially treated stutterers was perceptually different from the speech of normal speakers when judged by unsophisticated listeners. Tape-recorded speech samples of treated stutterers were obtained from leading proponents of (1) Van Riperian, (2) metronome-conditioned speech retraining, (3) delayed auditory feedback, (4) operant conditioning, (5) precision fluency shaping, and (6) “holistic” therapy programs. Fluent speech samples from these groups of stutterers were paired with matched fluent samples of normal talkers and presented to a group of 20 unsophisticated judges. The judges were instructed to select from each paired speech sample presented to them the one produced by the stuttering subject. The results of the analyses showed that five of seven experimental groups were identified at levels significantly above chance. It can be concluded that the fluent speech of the partially and successfully treated stutterers was perceptibly different from the utterances of the normal speakers and that the perceptual disparity can be detected, even by unsophisticated listeners.  相似文献

Records collected during childhood and coded prior to knowledge of adult behavior provided information about the childhood homes of 201 men. Thirty years later, information about criminal behavior was collected from court records. Multiple regression and discriminant function analyses indicate that six variables describing family atmosphere during childhood--mother's selfconfidence, father's deviance, parental aggressiveness, maternal affection, parental conflict, and supervision--have an important impact on subsequent behavior.  相似文献

Young children's apparently sophisticated understanding of language is explained by a simple heuristic which produces responses fortuitously appropriate to many of the messages directed to them. Specifically, the strategy recruits action responses to language unless some element, either linguistic or nonlinguistic, indicates otherwise. Two experiments tested for the existence of the heuristic by examining the responses of children, 19–34 months of age, to sentences susceptible of more than one interpretation. In the first experiment such sentences were spoken in as neutral a context as possible. In the second, the same sorts of sentences were presented in contexts supporting either action or informing responses. The results of both experiments indicate that young children interpret and respond to language in terms of an action-based strategy. Moreover, the observed effects of context show that even young children engage in a continuous, context-sensitive process of interpretation. The data are discussed with regard to speech act theory and its role in a developmental theory of understanding.  相似文献

The behavioral and physiological components of depression were investigated in two experiments comparing eight student and seven non-student depressed females with an equal number of students and non-student controls on avoidance tasks and electrodermal responsivity to an aversive audiotape. Avoidance behavior was assessed in both active and passive paradigms where the correct response or response suppression, respectively, function to avoid a noxious buzzer. Physiological activity and reactivity were compared using measurements of skin resistance level and SRR fluctuations during resting and aversive tape periods. It was found that the depressed groups showed inferior active and superior passive avoidance learning as compared to controls. Depressed subjects were also more emotionally responsive (showed a greater number of SRR) during presentation of the audiotape. A passive avoidance model for depression is suggested for the explanation of the phenomena observed. A distinct difference was also found between student and non-student populations. The utility of college student analogs for depression is questioned.  相似文献

The verbal helping skills of human service paraprofessionals in a youth service agency were studied. Workers who had previously completed a 10-week systematic training program in basic helping skills were compared to untrained volunteer staff. Using simulated helping interviews, it was found that training made a significant impact on trainees' verbal helping responses. Skill level was maintained at a 2-month follow-up for certain responses whereas others returned to pretraining levels. Trainees were found to use significantly more "helpful" responses than volunteers. The need for training even carefully selected paraprofessionals is discussed.  相似文献
