The prevalence and correlates of postpartum depression were examined in a large (N = 1,033) sample of married, primiparous, middle-class mothers of full-term, healthy infants; 9.3% met modified Research Diagnostic Criteria for depression. However, 39% of the nondepressed women also reported at least 1 somatic symptom. Depressed women whose symptoms were current obtained elevated scores on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale, as did some women who did not meet depression criteria. Depressed women different from nondepressed women on several socioeconomic status indicators and the occurrence of obstetric complications, even in this low-risk sample. This paper contrasts two views of the cognitive architecture underlying numerical skills and acalculia. According to the abstract-modular theory (e.g., McCloskey, Caramazza, & Basili, 1985), number processing is comprised of independent comprehension, calculation, and production subsystems that communicate via a single type of abstract quantity code. The alternative, specific-integrated theory (e.g., Campbell & Clark, 1988), proposes that visuospatial, verbal, and other modality-specific number codes are associatively connected as an encoding complex and that different facets of number processing generally involve common, rather than independent, processes. The hypothesis of specific number codes is supported by conceptual inadequacies of abstract codes, format-specific phenomena in calculation, the diversity of acalculias and individual differences in number processing, lateralization issues, and the role of format-specific codes in working memory. The integrated, associative view of number processing is supported by the dependence of modular views on abstract codes and other conceptual inadequacies, evidence for integrated associative networks in calculation tasks, acalculia phenomena, shortcomings in modular architectures for number-processing dissociations, close ties between semantic and verbal aspects of numbers, and continuities between number and nonnumber processing. These numerous logical and empirical considerations challenge the abstract-modular theory and support the encoding-complex view that number processing is effected by integrated associative networks of modality-specific number codes. 相似文献

The study investigated the relationship between fear and anxiety in childhood. One hundred fifty-one children aged 6 to 11 years (mean=8.7 years) completed the Fear Survey Schedule for Children-Revised (FSSC-R) and the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS). Correlational analyses demonstrated that the FSSC-R and each of the fear factors were significantly correlated with each other and with the RCMAS score. A stepwise regression procedure was used to determine if the FSSC-R or any of its five factors was significantly related to scores on the RCMAS. Results indicated that Factor 1 (Failure and Criticism) accounted for 31% of the variance (p < .0001)and Factor 2 (Fear of the Unknown) accounted for an additional 1% of the variance (p < .03)in the RCMAS scores. Facial images can be enhanced by application of an algorithm--the caricature algorithm--that systematically manipulates their distinctiveness (Benson & Perrett, 1991c; Brennan, 1985). In this study, we first produced a composite facial image from natural images of the six facial expressions of fear, sadness, surprise, happiness, disgust, and anger shown on a number of different individual faces (Ekman & Friesen, 1975). We then caricatured the composite images with respect to a neutral (resting) expression. Experiment 1 showed that rated strength of the target expression was directly related to the degree of enhancement for all the expressions. Experiment 2, which used a free rating procedure, found that, although caricature enhanced the strength of the target expression (more extreme ratings), it did not necessarily enhance its purity, inasmuch as the attributes of nontarget expressions were also enhanced. Naming of prototypes, of original exemplar images, and of caricatures was explored in Experiment 3 and followed the pattern suggested by the free rating conditions of Experiment 2, with no overall naming advantage to caricatures under these conditions. Overall, the experiments suggested that computational methods of compositing and caricature can be usefully applied to facial images of expression. Their utility in enhancing the distinctiveness of the expression depends on the purity of expression in the source image. 相似文献

This paper reviews the current literature in relation to how gay men are affected by AIDS related bereavement. It seems that bereavement reactions have changed as the epidemic has progressed. Initially, it seemed that gay men were very badly affected by AIDS related bereavements, especially the experience of multiple bereavements. However, while the experience of such bereavement cna be vary stressful it seems that gay men are less afected in the long term than was previously thought. Results are reported for a study of collegestudents that examined gender differences in theconsistency of attributions over time, in generalattributional style, and in specific explanations forperformance in a course. Both genders demonstratedconsistency over time. There was no difference ingeneral attributional style by gender, and there was nodifference in specific attributions for courseperformance by gender combined with accuracy in predictingperformance. However, there was a difference in theexplanations for performance selected by men versuswomen and in the explanations for performance selected by those students who accurately predictedtheir own performance versus inaccurate predictors. Thesample was comprised of 113 men and 94 women; mostly inthe 21 to 24 age range (108), followed by the 17 to 20 age range (78), the 24 to 27 range (16),27 to 30 range (3) and the older than 30 range (2). Thesample was mostly Caucasian (176), followed by Asian(13), African American (8), Hispanic (7), Other (2), and missing data (1).
