Perceived Effectiveness of Principals of Seventh-day Adventist Boarding Schools

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of principals in Seventh-day Adventist boarding high schools in North America as perceived by school staff, superintendents, and the principals themselves. Responses to the standardized assessment instrument were received from 201 staff, 23 principals, and 17 superintendents. The instrument assessed effectiveness in terms of four constructs related to the principal's work: maintenance, adaptation, goal attainment, and integration. Results indicated that principals were perceived to be highly effective in maintenance and integration and moderately effective in adaptation and goal attainment. When compared to national norms, respondent's perceptions of the effectiveness of principals in Adventist boarding high schools were equal to or higher than those for their public-school counterparts.

Abstract

Early childhood deprivation, attachment chaos, repeated medical traumata, and abuse set up neural networks of dread, shame, worthlessness, and hopelessness: the phenomenology of abject experience that resides in implicit memory. Abject interactions with others condense yearning and despair into complex enactments of abject suffering. Working in abject subgroups dilutes the intensity of abject material as ownership of toxic affects is broadened. Affective engagement and a relational perspective facilitate the management and transformation of self-abjection into more optimal relatedness in combined group and individual treatment.     

The Diagnostic Utility of Welsh's A-R Categories

The purpose of this study was to determine if the diagnosis-A-R category relationships described by Welsh hold for other patient samples. White, nonorganic males were categorized into one of four quadrants using Welsh's criteria. Statistical analysis showed no differences among the subgroups with regard to age, IQ, education or marital status. The major analysis disclosed no support whatsoever for Welsh's findings, either for all diagnostic groupings or for the separate diagnostic subgroupings presumably related to specific quadrants.     

The Adult Attachment Projective Picture System: Integrating Attachment Into Clinical Assessment

This article summarizes the development and validation of the Adult Attachment Projective System (AAP), a measure we developed from the Bowlby–Ainsworth developmental tradition to assess adult attachment status. The AAP coding and classification system and application in clinical and community samples are summarized. Finally, we introduce the 3 other articles that are part of this Special Section and discuss the use of the AAP in therapeutic assessment and treatment.     

Testing the bi‐dimensional effects of attitudes on behavioural intentions and subsequent behaviour

Attitudes are typically treated as unidimensional predictors of both behavioural intentions and subsequent behaviour. On the basis of previous research showing that attitudes comprise two independent, positive and negative dimensions, we hypothesized that attitudes would be bi‐dimensional predictors of both behavioural intentions and subsequent behaviour. We focused on health‐risk behaviours. We therefore also hypothesized that the positive dimension of attitude (evaluations of positive behavioural outcomes) would better predict both behavioural intentions and subsequent behaviour than would the negative dimension, consistent with the positivity bias/offset principle. In Study 1 (cross sectional design), N = 109 university students completed questionnaire measures of their intentions to binge‐drink and the positive and negative dimensions of attitude. Consistent with the hypotheses, both attitude dimensions independently predicted behavioural intentions and the positive dimension was a significantly better predictor than was the negative dimension. The same pattern of findings emerged in Study 2 (cross sectional design; N = 186 university students) when we predicted intentions to binge‐drink, smoke and consume a high‐fat diet. Similarly, in Study 3 (prospective design; N = 1,232 speed limit offenders), both the positive and negative dimensions of attitude predicted subsequent (6‐month post‐baseline) speeding behaviour on two different road types and the positive dimension was the better predictor. The implications for understanding the motivation of behaviour and the development of behaviour‐change interventions are discussed.
