The present study investigated the ability of incarcerated rapists to control penile tumescence at three different levels of arousal while viewing stimuli varying in content. Changes in penile tumescence were measured via mercury-in-rubber strain gauge plethysmography. Ss were presented attractive slide-transparencies of nude adult females and were instructed to allow themselves to become aroused. When the desired level of arousal for a particular trial was reached (25, 50 or 75% of full erection) the stimulus was removed and replaced with a second stimulus. These second stimuli belonged to one of four categories: (1) the same slide presented again; (2) a novel, but equally attractive slide of an adult female; (3) a blank slide; or (4) a slide of a nude prepubescent female. Ss were instructed to reduce their arousal as much as possible during this second stage while continuing to view the stimulus. Results indicate that control over penile tumescence is more difficult at low levels of arousal (25 and 50%) than at high levels (75%). It was also found that the content of the stimulus being viewed differentially affected the Ss' ability to control penile tumescence. The results are discussed with reference to current assessment techniques.  相似文献

This research examined jury decisions in 317 noncapital felony cases in El Paso, Texas, and assessed the impact of juror ethnicity on jury trial outcomes. Results revealed that there was no relation between defendant ethnicity and the probability of conviction. Anglo American defendants, however, received sentences that were approximately twice as severe as Hispanic defendants. Sentences imposed by juries were significantly related to defendant ethnicity and type of crime for which they were tried. Sentences were also influenced by defendant ethnicity in interaction with jury ethnic composition. Important differences appeared when there was a critical mass of 6 or more Hispanics on juries. This study, using criminal court data, provides a unique opportunity to examine the utility of social psychological theories for understanding actual trial outcomes.  相似文献

Much of the industrial/organizational psychology research literature involves abstractions called constructs. Frequently, new constructs are proposed and measures are developed, revised, and evaluated in studies for modeling or predicting organizational criteria. There are many hazards in these studies that lead to incorrect conclusions and decisions. This is especially applicable to the introduction and use of new constructs. We discuss several methodological issues that affect the interpretation of results from theoretical and applied studies and provide examples where construct confusion occurred due to failure to use best practices. A paradigm is proposed to increase the efficacy of studies regardless of which model of constructs has been chosen. Consideration is given to sample characteristics, range restriction, reliability of scores, criterion development, identifying latent sources of variance, content validity, comparing regression equations, and defining the nomological network.  相似文献

The group analytic group-as-a-whole approach of Foulkes privileges the concept of the group matrix. The term matrix is a metaphor for the network of all individual mental processes, the psychological medium in which they meet, communicate, and interact. The developing group matrix acts both as a container and as a holding environment for the psychic processes of the individual members in the group context. The concept of coherency is evoked to describe the process of the developing capacity of a group to be therapeutic. The generally low degree of agreement between self-ratings on personality traits and ratings by others may be interpreted from the viewpoint that self-reports reflect people's experience of themselves but not necessarily their behaviors. A detailed analysis of self and other ratings on subjective well-being as a central dimension of human experience is consistent with this phenomenological view. Ratings of well-being were not significantly correlated with rated behaviors either in self-ratings or in ratings by others. Screening subjects in terms of avowed consistency and observability on a trait did not improve self-other agreement for well-being, nor did it replicate the individual trait effects reported by Kenrick and Stringfield (1980). Judgments by others were found to have poor interjudge reliability and to reflect biases associated with projection of own well-being and a halo effect organized around the subject's perceived friendliness or likability. It was demonstrated that pooling the judgments of several observers should not and does not lead to accurate prediction of the phenomenal personality, and that accuracy may generally depend on the level of self-disclosure.  相似文献
