ObjectivesThis study examined whether a video featuring an adult with a physical disability engaging in either sport, exercise, or an activity of daily living (ADL) can mitigate negative stereotypes of disability held by people without a disability.DesignThis study used a pre-post design, involving three participant groups.MethodsParticipants (n = 212) read a vignette describing an adult with a disability (target). Consistent with the stereotype content model, participants judged the target's warmth and competence. One week later, participants viewed a video of the target participating in sport, exercise, or an ADL and judged the target's warmth and competence.ResultsJudgements of competence but not warmth changed over time. The greatest increases occurred in the sport condition. At follow-up, the typical high warmth low competence stereotype of disability was reversed; the character was judged as being more competent than warm especially in the sport condition.ConclusionVideos of adults with a disability engaging in physical activity, particularly sport, have potential to mitigate negative stereotypes of disability. 相似文献

The development of preschool children of Aboriginal heritage is jeopardized by the inter-generational transmission of risk
that has created, and continues to create, social disadvantage. Early intervention programs are intended to mitigate the impact
of social disadvantage. Yet, evidence of the effectiveness of these programs for children of Aboriginal heritage is limited.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a two-generation, multi-cultural preschool program on 45 children
of Aboriginal heritage and their caregivers. We used a single-group, pretest (program intake)/posttest (program exit) design
with follow-up when the children were 7 years old. We used an observational measure of child receptive language (Peabody Picture
Vocabulary Test–III) and caregiver-reported measures of child development (Nipissing District Developmental Screen), risk
for child maltreatment (Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory; AAPI), parenting stress (Parenting Stress Index; PSI), self-esteem
(Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale; RSE), and life skills (Community Life Skills scale; CLS). Using paired t-tests we found statistically significant increases in child receptive language scores between intake and exit, and repeated-measures
ANOVA showed that these improvements were maintained up to age 7 years. For caregivers, Pearson’s correlations demonstrated
that risk for child maltreatment, parenting stress, self-esteem, and life skills were stable over time. Results of this study
suggest that children of Aboriginal heritage can benefit from participation in a two-generation, multi-cultural preschool
program. Their caregivers may have received greater benefit if issues of intergenerational transmission of the negative influences
of residential schools were addressed as part of programming. 相似文献

The interest in Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) in emerging adulthood has grown in recent years, and it is now
acknowledged that the signs and symptoms of DCD persist into adolescence and adulthood. Nevertheless, the long-term impact
of DCD is still poorly understood, and little is known about positive orientations of young adults with DCD. This review discusses
some of the persisting features of DCD, with a particular emphasis on psychosocial difficulties, self-perception and the impact
of comorbid developmental disorders. The role of the parent in emerging adulthood in DCD is an area that has received little
research focus, but it seems likely that parents have a key role to play in positive outcomes. The need to provide appropriate
assessment, intervention and support for young adults with DCD is discussed in terms of the need to provide comprehensive
and continued support for all aspects of the disorder, which also takes into consideration the impact of DCD on the wider
family unit. 相似文献

Between 30 and 70% of children with developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) will have persistent daily functioning difficulties
in adulthood (Cousins and Smyth 2003). However, few DCD studies have focussed specifically on the stage of emerging adulthood. Driving is an important rite of
passage which marks the start of independence from parents. Delay, difficulty or avoidance in learning to drive may all have
profound social, practical and psychological implications for the young adult with DCD. The driving experiences of 38 students
with DCD and 77 typically developing students aged 17–25 years were examined using a semi-structured questionnaire. Quantitative
measures indicate that fewer adults with DCD learn to drive compared to controls and that they show continuing difficulties
with distance estimation and parking. Qualitative comments give a valuable insight into the learning and driving experiences
of adults with DCD. Differences in the driving behaviour of adults with DCD and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
are discussed, as it is the need to consider guidance on driving skills when providing a package of care for young adults
with DCD. 相似文献

Context: This paper reports on a qualitative study looking at the perceptions of clients who use drugs and are on low income. Research suggests that counselling services can experience difficulties in reaching and retaining such clients, and outcomes of counselling can be disappointing. Aim: To learn from clients who had engaged in counselling for over six months what difference it had made to their lives. Method: Grounded theory methodology was used to analyse semi‐structured interviews with six participants. Findings: Findings included changes in the clients’ internal world, their connectedness with society, their familiarity with counselling, and their perception of the relationship with the counsellor. Factors within the counselling process which helped and hindered change were identified. The study documents how participants were able to use counselling to improve their lives. 相似文献

A randomized trial examining the effects of parent engagement on early language and literacy: the Getting Ready intervention 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Language and literacy skills established during early childhood are critical for later school success. Parental engagement with children has been linked to a number of adaptive characteristics in preschoolers including language and literacy development, and family-school collaboration is an important contributor to school readiness. This study reports the results of a randomized trial of a parent engagement intervention designed to facilitate school readiness among disadvantaged preschool children, with a particular focus on language and literacy development. Participants included 217 children, 211 parents, and 29 Head Start teachers in 21 schools. Statistically significant differences in favor of the treatment group were observed between treatment and control participants in the rate of change over 2 academic years on teacher reports of children's language use (d = 1.11), reading (d = 1.25), and writing skills (d = 0.93). Significant intervention effects on children's direct measures of expressive language were identified for a subgroup of cases where there were concerns about a child's development upon entry into preschool. Additionally, other child and family moderators revealed specific variables that influenced the treatment's effects. 相似文献

Variability in personality has been recognized in recent years as an important aspect of personality both conceptually and empirically. A relatively new and efficient method of obtaining variability information is frequency-based personality assessment (Edwards & Woehr, 2007). The purpose of the present research is to further examine the viability of frequency-based personality measurement as an alternative to traditional (Likert-type) measurement and to assess the usefulness of the variance-based parameters. Toward this end, three studies are presented. Specifically, Study 1 examined relationships between a frequency-based measure of the Big Five personality traits and several motivational variables. Study 2 examined the moderating role of temporal consistency information (provided by frequency-based measurement) on relationships between personality and peer ratings of task performance. Study 3 compared the frequency-based measure to a Likert-type measure with respect to each measure’s susceptibility to deliberate response distortion. Results indicated that consistency information increases the predictive validity of agreeableness and conscientiousness and that a frequency-based format is less susceptible to faking than a Likert-type format for conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience. 相似文献

This article describes Let's Talk, a counseling center outreach program. Counselors hold walk‐in hours across campus to engage students who might not otherwise seek counseling. Locations are chosen to reach underserved communities. Counselors offer informal consultation, a less formal alternative to traditional counseling.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the observation of action can modulate motor performance. This literature has focused on manipulating the observed goal of the action, rather than examining whether action observation effects could be elicited by changing observed kinematics alone. In the study presented here, observed reach trajectory kinematics unrelated to the goal of the action were manipulated in order to examine whether observed movement kinematics alone could influence the action of the observer. Participants observed an experimenter grasp a target object using either a normal or an exaggeratedly high reaching action (as though reaching over an invisible obstacle). When participants observed the experimenter perform actions with a high reach trajectory, their own movements took on aspects of the observed action, showing greater wrist height throughout their reaching trajectory than under conditions in which they observed normal reaching actions. The data are discussed in relation to previous findings which suggest that kinematic aspects of observed movements can prime action through kinematic or intention based matching processes. 相似文献

Whether religious groups advance or limit human rights has been a topic of recent debate among human rights scholars. This article studies the conditions under which religious leaders advance human rights in the context of Argentina's Jewish community during the country's 1976–1983 military dictatorship. Three major influences on religious support for human rights—autonomy from a religious community's establishment, a missionary-reformer identity, and congregational mobilization—are highlighted. Original archival research from the papers of U.S.-born rabbi Marshall T. Meyer illustrates his defense of human rights in Argentina, contrasting his work with the inaction of a major established Jewish organization. Quantitative cross-national analysis extends the case study findings by showing a relationship between religious institutions’ autonomy from the state and defense of human rights. 相似文献
