Counseling the aging

In a culture preoccupied with youth, the aged are often relegated to a secondary and neglected status. Mary Buckley's article asks us to take another look at the aged and realize that, contrary to our prejudices, personal growth and creative living do not end with the beginning of retirement. She describes her counseling style with the aging, which is designed to provide an atmosphere of understanding and sharing in order to foster their growth.     

Competency-Based Employment-Counseling Model: Local Office Implementation

This article describes the early stages in the implementation of the competency-based employment-counseling model in a local employment office in Kentucky. Preliminary steps taken at both the state and local levels are discussed. The actual application of the model in the Louisville local office is then presented. The conclusions provide several key factors to successful initial implementation.     

Beyond the Circumplex Model: I. A Moratorium on Curvilinearity

The developmental history of Olson's Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems, and companion measure, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES), are reviewed with respect to structure, definition, and theory. Cohesion and adaptability are analyzed as multivariate constructs consisting of linear variables that interact in a confounding, systemic fashion. The theory of curvilinearity — the idea that the model's two key dimensions of cohesion and adaptability form a curvilinear rather than linear relationship with effective family functioning — is rejected.     

On Not Teaching the History of Philosophy

Courses in the history of philosophy which exclude contributions made by women cannot legitimately claim to teach this history. This is true, not merely because those histories are incomplete, but rather because they give a biased account. 1 sketch the difficulties thus posed for the profession, and offer suggestions for developing a less biased, more accurate understanding of the history of philosophy.     

AGENCY-IN-PRACTICE: AN INTERPENETRATION OF INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES

Agency-in-practice is the concrete application of individual constructive capacities as permeated and potentiated by contemporaneous social meanings, practices, and institutions. This concept is proposed as one that maintains an intelligible, potent role for human agency in postmodern theorizing, while embracing the constructive processes of social interactions and institutions. Agency-in-practice is examined in three domains: (1) coordination of subpersonal processes, (2) construal and predication, and (3) language development and use. Implications of such a reformulation of agency are suggested, especially those regarding conditions for the full development of agency and for facilitating social change.
