Medicine, as Byron Good argues, reconstitutes thehuman body of our daily experience as a medical body,unfamiliar outside medicine. This reconstitution can be seen intwo ways: (i) as a salutary reminder of the extent to which thereality even of the human body is constructed; and (ii) as anarena for what Stephen Toulmin distinguishes as theintersection of natural science and history, in which many ofphilosophy's traditional (and traditionally abstract) questionsare given concrete and urgent form.This paper begins by examining a number of dualities between themedical body and the body familiar in daily experience. Toulmin's epistemological analysis of clinical medicine ascombining both universal and existential knowledge is thenconsidered. Their expression, in terms of attention,respectively, to natural science and to personal history, isexplored through the epistemological contrasts between themedical body and the familiar body, noting the traditionalphilosophical questions which they in turn illustrate.  相似文献

The finding of stronger affective priming in less conscious (suboptimal) conditions than in fully conscious (optimal) conditions (S. T. Murphy & R. B. Zajonc, 1993) is theoretically important because it contradicts notions that emotions are primarily reflected by conscious states. In 2 experiments, this pattern of results was obtained. Happy and angry faces were presented both optimally and suboptimally and were masked by unknown ideographs. In Experiment 1, instructions for the conscious and less conscious affective priming conditions were matched, and affective ratings of ideographs were determined. In Experiment 2, a more implicit affective measure (facial electromyography of musculus zygomaticus major and musculus corrugator supercilii) served as the dependent variable. Stronger suboptimal than optimal affective priming was found in both experiments. It is concluded that stronger suboptimal than optimal processing is characteristic for affective processing and that it can also be found when instructions are matched and when a more implicit measure is assessed.  相似文献

To distinguish between theoretical concepts of how attention is allocated, participants were presented with different types of precues in 6 experiments. In 1 condition with 100% valid precues (Experiments 1 and 2), the time course of attention effects revealed that (a) higher accuracy was obtained with dynamic multiple-element precues (MEPs in which the unique element was defined by apparent motion) than with static MEPs, in which the elements did not move once they were presented (Cheal & Chastain, 1998); (b) a longer precue-target interval (stimulus-onset asynchrony; SOA) was needed to reach asymptote accuracy with dynamic MEPs than with dynamic single-element precues (SEPs); and (c) all dynamic precues (both MEPs and SEPs) resulted in a decline in accuracy at long SOAs. These results suggest that static and dynamic MEPs result in delayed engagement of attention relative to SEPs. Further, a decline in accuracy at long intervals is associated with static and dynamic SEPs and dynamic MEPs, but not with static MEPs. With irrelevant precues (Experiments 3 to 5), there was capture by precues in which the unique element moved briskly, smoothly, or abruptly, or simply flashed on and off, although there were differences in the amount of capture. The strongest capture occurred with smooth movement in static background elements and the weakest with smooth movement in abruptly moving background elements. It was shown in Experiment 6 that a static MEP will not capture attention if one element changes to a unique brightness near the time of precue onset, but if the element changes after 1,000 ms, it will capture attention. The authors suggest that different types of precues result in unequal influence of endogenous and exogenous components of attention, even when the same targets are used. In addition, they show that neither singleton detection mode nor contingent involuntary orienting is necessary for the capture of attention.  相似文献

Theories on visual search differ substantially with respect to the relationship they assume between localization and identification processes. The aim of the present study was to rigorously compare the alternative theoretical notions on how localization and identification processes are related. In two experiments, participants searched for a target with a unique line orientation among distractors containing another orientation. Localization and identification performance were measured in combination, as function of display size and target eccentricity. To compare the alternative theories, formal binomial models were developed and compared with respect to their goodness of fit to the individual data. The formal analyses showed that the model assuming identification processes to be conditioned on localization processes provided the best fit to the individual data. Furthermore, maximum likelihood estimates of the parameter corresponding to identification processes were differently affected by display size than identification performance was. The results were discussed in terms of their implication for current theories on visual search.  相似文献

Network therapy was developed as a specialized type of combined individual and group therapy to ensure greater success in the office-based treatment of addicted patients by using both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches to individual therapy while engaging the patient in a group support network composed of family members and peers. This article outlines the role of group cohesiveness as a vehicle for engaging patients in this treatment; the patient's family and peers are used as a therapeutic network, joining the patient and therapist at intervals in therapy sessions. This network is managed by the therapist to provide cohesiveness and support, to undermine denial, and to promote compliance with treatment. The author presents applications of the network technique designed to sustain abstinence and describes means of stabilizing the patient's involvement. Some specific techniques discussed include ambulatory detoxification, disulfiram and naltrexone administration, relapse prevention, and contingency contracting. Also discussed are recent research on the use of psychiatric residents and counselors for treatment, and use of the Internet in dissemination.  相似文献

Unidirectional motion of a uniplanar background induces a codirectional postural sway. It has been shown recently that fixation of a stationary foreground object induces a sway response in the opposite direction (Bronstein & Buckwell, 1997) when the background moves transiently. The present study investigated factors determining this contradirectional postural response. In the experiments presented, center of foot pressure and head displacements were recorded from normal subjects. The subjects faced a visual background of 2 x 3 m, at a distance of 1.5 m, which could be moved parallel to the interaural axis. Results showed that when the visual scene consisted solely of a moving background, the conventional codirectional postural response was elicited. When subjects were asked to fixate an earth-fixed foreground (window frame) placed between them and the moving background, a consistent postural response in the opposite direction to background motion was observed. In addition, we showed that this contradirectional postural response was not transient but was sustained for the 11 sec of background motion. We investigated whether this contradirectional postural response was the consequence of the induced movement of the foreground by background motion. Although induced movement was verbally reported by subjects when viewing an earth-fixed target projected onto the moving background, the contradirectional sway did not occur. These results indicate that foreground-background separation in depth was necessary for the contradirectional postural response to occur rather than induced movement. Another experiment showed that, when the fixated foreground was attached to the head of the observer, the contradirectional sway was not observed and was therefore unrelated to vergence. Finally, results showed that the contradirectional postural response was, in the main, monocularly mediated. We conclude that the direction of the postural sway produced by a moving background in a three-dimensional environment is determined primarily by motion parallax.  相似文献

The present study was designed to examine the retention of relative force in the scaling of a serial force pattern in a finger-tapping sequence using an attenuated tap. On practice trials, 12 undergraduate students tapped a force plate connected to strain gauges that gave them feedback about the force. On test trials, participants recalled the force pattern (200 gm-200 gm-200 gm-100 gm) and the intertap interval (400 msec.) practiced during the practice period without the feedback (recalled task). Then, they adaptively produced a halved (halved task) or doubled force profile (doubled task) at the fixed intertap interval. Analyses showed that mean peak forces at the first three tap positions of the tapping sequence undershot the expected forces across all tasks. Hence, the ratios of the forces in Serial Positions 1:4, 2:4, and 3:4 were considerably lower than 2.0. This is a contextual effect suggesting that the last attenuated tap affected the first three taps of the tapping sequence. Thus, because the relative force of movements appears to be a weaker invariant feature than sequencing and relative timing for generalized motor program theory of Schmidt and Lee, this finding does not support the relative force for a generalized motor program.  相似文献

To examine how well the theories of reasoned action and planned behavior predict condom use, the authors synthesized 96 data sets (N = 22,594) containing associations between the models' key variables. Consistent with the theory of reasoned action's predictions, (a) condom use was related to intentions (weighted mean r. = .45), (b) intentions were based on attitudes (r. = .58) and subjective norms (r. = .39), and (c) attitudes were associated with behavioral beliefs (r. = .56) and norms were associated with normative beliefs (r. = .46). Consistent with the theory of planned behavior's predictions, perceived behavioral control was related to condom use intentions (r. = .45) and condom use (r. = .25), but in contrast to the theory, it did not contribute significantly to condom use. The strength of these associations, however, was influenced by the consideration of past behavior. Implications of these results for HIV prevention efforts are discussed.  相似文献
