Discussion of Slade “Imagining Fear”

This discussion addresses the importance of fear as a key feature of attachment, examining some of the implications of Slade’s argument both for clinical work and for understanding of developmental process. The discussion also is focused on the kinds of genetic and evolutionary theories most useful in thinking about interactive effects, namely epigenetics, the study of genes in context. Finally the discussion identifies relational theory, which focuses on fear as an implicit dimension of attachment. Bromberg’s work on dissociation is cited as an example of work in which fear plays a prominent role.

Video‐based Testing: A high‐fidelity job simulation that demonstrates reliability,validity, and utility

A conceptual rationale is presented for the use of a high‐fidelity simulation: a video‐based test (VBT), in which applicants view job‐related scenarios, respond orally, and are later scored on five dimensions by trained raters. Using applicant data, we empirically investigate the criterion‐related validity, reliability, and utility of the VBT. Overall, we found that the VBT predicted performance in training and on the job. In addition, different raters strongly agreed with one another on each applicant's scores. Despite somewhat higher development costs, the VBT demonstrated high utility. We suggest that organizations consider the use of VBTs as a selection instrument for jobs that require the use of applied social and interpersonal skills.     

The Perception of the Passage of Time among Death-Involved Hospital Patients*

The present study attempted to evaluate the extent of the relationship between death involvement and temporal orientation among hospitalized suicidal, terminal, geriatrically ill, and normal patients. Their perception of the passage of time was evaluated by (a) behavioral estimations of elapsed time and (b) a survey of their opinions concerning the passage of time. The latter method included an evaluation of various consequences of the rate of time passage. The results indicated that the suicidal patients, closely followed by the geriatrically ill, overestimated time intervals to a much greater extent than did the normal and terminal patients. The suicidal subjects expressed a great deal of impulsiveness and described themselves as feeling miserable to a much greater degree than did the other groups.     

Clearing Up Obstructions: An Image Schema Approach to the Concept of ‘Datong’ 大通 in Chapter 6 of the Zhuangzi

In much of modern scholarship, the notion of datong 大通 in Zhuangzi’s famous zuowang 坐忘 (sitting in disregard) passage is often interpreted as either Dao or a mental/spiritual state of an ideal person, a person who has obtained Dao. In either case, however, the association between datong and such interpretation lacks detailed justification resulting from an insufficiently understood relation between datong and its immediately preceding statements. Different from the more common readings, I propose a cognitive approach based on an image schema related to non-obstruction. In order to demonstrate the philosophical importance of this schema, I will first briefly point out the problems of previous scholarship regarding the zuowang passage. Second, I will introduce the image schema related to non-obstruction based on a number of examples taken from the Zhuangzi. Finally, I will apply this methodology and introduce a cognitive experience-based interpretation of the zuowang passage.

The functions of a salesperson are equated to those of a soldier, and the theories of guerrilla warfare as espoused by people such as Mao Tse-Tung are applied to sales management decision areas.
