Multicultural education emerged from the political struggles of the 1960s and 1970s and advocated the inclusion of women and ethnic and racial groups in school curricula and children's media. Recently multiculturalism has evolved to include a critical perspective by focusing on stigmatized social identities such as race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, and disability. Little Bill, a children's animated television series, is an example of applied critical multiculturalism. In this chapter, we present a case study of one episode, "A Ramp for Monty," to illustrate the merits of this approach, which may increase the number of social identities children relate to and increase the degree of understanding they may bring to the differences inherent in social identities. 相似文献

The authors examined one manner in which to decrease the negative impact of social dominance orientation (SDO), an individual difference variable that indicates support for the "domination of 'inferior' groups by 'superior' groups" (J. Sidanius & F. Pratto, 1999, p. 48), on the selection of candidates from low-status groups within society. Consistent with the tenets of social dominance theory, in 2 studies we found that those high in SDO reported that they were less likely to select a potential team member who is a member of a low-status group (i.e., a White female in Study 1 and a Black male in Study 2) than those low in SDO. However, explicit directives from an authority moderated this effect such that those high in SDO were more likely to select both candidates when authority figures clearly communicated that job performance indicators should be used when choosing team members. Thus, our studies suggest that the negative effects of SDO may be attenuated if those high in SDO are instructed by superiors to use legitimate performance criteria to evaluate job candidates. 相似文献

This qualitative study explores the role of spirituality and meaning among 15 participants suffering from severe depression.
During the time of this study, all the participants were in treatment at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center.
The emerging themes are: (1) depression creates a sense of spiritual disconnection. Participants indicated feeling disconnected
from God, the community, and oneself; (2) spirituality plays an important role in coping with the pain of depression; (3)
there exists a deep yearning for a sense of meaning and a struggle to make sense of one’s pain; and (4) coming to terms with

To assess the construct validity of the endogenous subtype of depression, 2 studies examined the relation of mood regulation skill to the symptoms of endogenous depression versus hopelessness depression in adolescent samples. It was hypothesized that the relationship between mood regulation skill and endogenous depression would be weaker than the relationship between mood regulation skill and hopelessness depression, because endogenous depression may be less influenced by personality variables, such as mood regulation skill. In spite of the high degree of correlation between the symptoms of hopelessness depression and endogenous depression, the relationship between mood regulation skill and hopelessness depression was stronger than the relationship between mood regulation skill and endogenous depression, as predicted. The most frequent names in Spanish corresponding to a set of 247 pictures in the Snodgrass and Vanderwart (1980) norms were used as stimuli in a discrete free-association task. A sample of 525 Spanish-speaking participants provided the first word that came to mind for each of the verbal stimuli. A body of research has demonstrated that the Type D personality is a risk factor among cardiac patients. Previous studies
validating the Type D Scale (DS14) across other clinical groups have not included chronic pain patients in their samples.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the construct and concurrent validity of the DS14 using the MMPI-2. The DS14
and its two component subscales demonstrated strong internal consistency among chronic pain patients. The two subscales of
the DS14 were found to be related to similar clinical scales on the MMPI-2, and significant differences were found in the
MMPI-2 profiles of individuals with and without the Type D personality. Considerations for clinical practice and research

The current dominant approach on the assessment of critical thinking takes as a starting point a conception of criticality
that does not commit to any substantive view or context of meaning concerning what issues are relevant to be critical about
in society or in life. Nevertheless, as a detailed examination of the identification of assumptions shows, when going from
the theory of critical thinking to the praxis of producing and evaluating arguments, the critical person will inevitably make
such commitments from particular perspectives, using particular contexts of meaning. But then she may fail to take notice
of relevant ones and may end up using her critical powers in a mercenary way. It is then proposed, in the context of assessment
of critical thinking, to choose and use some privileged contexts of meaning, while making them available for critical scrutiny
and allowing for the possibility that new ones be brought up by those being assessed.

Europe is in the process of building a more participative, just, and inclusive European Union. The European Social Fund, which is an initiative developed to actively promote multinational partnerships that address pressing social issues, is a good example of the European transformation. This article describes the steps taken to develop and evaluate the activities of an international network promoting collaborative capacity among regional partners involved in the prevention of labor discrimination toward immigrants in three European countries—Spain, Belgium, and Italy. An international team of community psychologists proposed an empowering approach to assess the collaborative capacity of the network. This approach consisted of three steps: (1) establishing a collaborative relationship among partners, (2) building collaborative capacity, and (3) evaluating the collaborative capacity of the network. We conclude with lessons learned from the process and provide recommendations for addressing the challenges inherent in international collaboration processes. 相似文献
