Semi-automated desensitization : a controlled clinical trial

A clinical trial of semi-automated desensitization on phobic patients. Twelve received treatment with a therapist present and 12 received treatment from pre-recorded tapes. Therapy lasted a maximum of 16 weekly sessions. Assessment of progress was by means of self-ratings of phobic behaviour and more global fear ratings, made by the referring psychiatrist. Both treatments produced beneficial results. Both ratings agreed in finding no significant differences between the two methods of administration, thus confirming results from existing non-clinical trials of automated desensitization. Regardless of treatment group, agoraphobics and social phobics tended to improve less markedly, and less rapidly than simple phobics. Some implications of automated therapy for clinical practice are discussed.

Interpretation and matching bias in a reasoning task

Subjects were required to construct verifying and falsifying cases of conditional rules in which the presence and absence of negative components was varied. Their responses gave some indication of consistent interpretation of the rules, generally conforming to Wason's (1966) idea of a “defective” truth table. Much of their behaviour, however, seemed to be determined by a task variable in the form of a tendency to construct instances which matched, rather than altered, the values named in the rules.     

AIDS Counselling: Clinical Application and Development of Services

The reasons for the provision of AIDS counselling services, and the ways in which they have developed, are described. The role of the counsellor both in medicine, and in the field of AIDS/HIV infection, is outlined. The psychosocial difficulties accompanying this illness are reviewed. Stress is placed on the need to consider not only the client, but also their sexual partners, family, friends, colleagues and even other members of the health-care team. Further investigations need to be carried out to clarify where AIDS counselling services fit with other medical and paramedical services.     

Assessing treatability in mentally disordered offenders: A conceptual and methodological note

The assessment of treatability in mentally disordered offenders has rarely been addressed through empirical research, despite its frequent use in clinical and legal decision-making. We describe four necessary steps for establishing the requisite research base for treatability evaluations: (a) criterion specification, (b) the development of reliable measures, (c) the validation of these measures with treatment outcome data, and (d) the incorporation of environmental and base rate information.     

Dying: A universal human experience?

This paper explores the question, “Is there a universal psychological experience suffered by all dying persons?” a question to which the popular theory of Kübler-Ross presupposes an affirmative answer. Our answer takes three steps: first, a comparison between the Kübler-Ross model of dying and that of the late medievalBook of the Craft of Dying centered upon the five Kübler-Ross “stages”; second, a philosophical critique of the terms of this comparison; and third, a revised look at the alleged similarities between the two models, providing a deeper look at the moral and spiritual assumptions behind each.
